Miyamoto: 'I'm Creatively Satisfied'

"Mario, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto discusses how he stays creatively inspired when making sequels, Wii U struggles, and eventual retirement.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the 60-year-old developer behind iconic franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong is “definitely creatively satisfied.” Though some of his time is now spent working on new entries to existing franchises, namely Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Pikmin 3, the developer told GameSpot today that he’s content with his work. Gamers shouldn’t shrug off sequels over thoughts that they lack innovation, because this is not the case, he argued.

GameSpot sat down with Miyamoto today at Nintendo’s New York City offices, speaking with the longtime industry veteran on a range of topics. In addition to stating his creative satisfaction, Miyamoto opened up on his eventual retirement, the struggles of communicating the Wii U’s message, Pikmin 3’s recent multi-month delay, and why Luigi is akin to a salad entrée by contemporary convention.", writes GameSpot.

"When you have a meal in front of you, and you have people who eat meat or you have people who eat vegetables, there's sort of the main dish and then you might have a dessert or a salad. Luigi is green, so maybe he's kind of like a salad and right now it seems like people tend to like lighter fare. [Luigi] is a little weaker and timid and maybe people like timid things these days. I guess Link's green, too [laughs]."

30 years later, Miyamoto is still wonderfully insane. In my 24-25 years of gaming, it never even crossed my mind to think of Luigi or Link as some pieces of lettuce.

As much as I like Miyamoto, I feel it's time for him to step down, let some new blood get in the game.

3rdDimension4066d ago

So they can quickly get out like all the new blood are doing now?

Kos-Mos4066d ago

We do not want gears, cod, gow, halo, killzone, me, skyrim, gta on Nintendo consoles.
Let me repeat:
We do not want gears, cod, gow, halo, killzone, me, skyrim, gta on Nintendo consoles.

Whymii4066d ago

I think that chant should start with "I don't want..."

You may not want to play those games on your Nintendo, but having the choice is not a bad thing. I would prefer the option of choosing not to play them than having that decision made for me by some executive.

Picnic4066d ago

But we would like the likes of The Unfinished Swan. The childlike wonder that Nintendo likes to portray has long coasted on past ground laid down.
I don't want them to be gorily dark but they sometimes need to be a bit more humourously dark - at least the WiiU has The Cave and Luigi's Mansions Dark Moon.

deafdani4066d ago

I'm a HUGE Nintendo fan, and I definitely want all these kinds of games as widely available on Nintendo consoles as they are on all the other consoles.

Variety is good. And get out, God of War, Grand Theft Auto and Mass Effect are all awesome, IMO.

:)

linkenski4066d ago

There's plenty of new blood in Nintendo even though Miyamoto is still there. Zelda Skyward Sword got a new director for instance. I would still like it if Nintendo got themselves a new team partition, or if they partnered with other developers to make new franchises.

Nintendo really lost something when Rare abandoned :/

Realplaya4066d ago

No actually rare lost something when they left nintendo.

caseh4066d ago

@realplaya

In the process M$ got Viva Pinata and the world rejoiced! Who needs Killer Instinct/Perfect Dark/Goldeneye when VIVA PINATA is in the house!

linkenski4065d ago

btw, i wasn't saying that Nintendo lost a part of their skill or something like that, just that Rare was such a great asset for them, and i think they boosted the reputation of the Nintendo systems.

3rdDimension4066d ago

No Miyamoto, you're supposed to want more power and beefier consoles so you can express your creativity because what we have now just won't cut it.

Dubaman4066d ago

Real creativity doesn't come from specs and power. The Golden Age of gaming was 16-bit but even in with the N64 you had games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time which are constantly on 'Best games of all times' list. Even by todays standards they still inspire. Sure they used the beef of the console at the time but even now thats been surpassed, people still talk about them. Real creativity is more than just specs and raw power...How many games from last gen or the one before that will still be spoken about and revered in 20 years?

3rdDimension4066d ago

I completely agree.

Truth be told, I was being sarcastic!

linkenski4066d ago

You're completetly right, but looking at the premise of the PS4 the concept is to have a machine where developers are no longer limited by technical issues (maybe talk about draw distance will soon be irrelevant) and it certainly should boost creativity. But on the other hand, every retail game has to compete to look as good as the ones next to it, so that's sort of a limitation in itself, and in that regard i think Nintendo get what they need with the Wii U.

D_RoyJenkins4066d ago

thats all nostalgia, Nintendo is nowhere near as relevant as the used to be.

CaptainN4065d ago

Right Jenkins..Nintendo is not relevant anymore, even though the Wii sold 100 million, the DS sold 153 million, the 3DS is on pace to be the top selling console ever, and the Wii-U sold over 3 million in 4 months......they are just so irrelevant !!!

I agree with the ‘looking-fun' element, I think the big problem aside from games is that not many people have gotten their hands on it let alone aware of the system's existence. When people saw the Wii, it looked fun to play or at least enticed people to try it out. The Wii U from a distance looks like another game console.

Much respect for Miyamoto.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4066d ago

:) O' Miyamoto you know we aren't ever going to let you retire.

EVER! >:-(

If Miyamoto retires, I am pretty sure that will just mean he will only work on 1 game at a time.

He doesn't strike me as the sit at home type.
I think no matter what he'll always have some Nintendo function...

At least that is the scenario I comfort myself with...
