Is the PS4 Making the Same Mistakes as the Wii U?

As of now the only two 100 percent confirmed next-gen consoles are Sony’s PS4 and Nintendo’s Wii U. These two consoles are surly competing against one another although the big battle between Microsoft and Sony has yet to begin. It can be said that Nintendo has been making some huge mistakes over the past few years with their Wii and Wii U consoles. After a huge press conference confirming the PS4 is on its way, players immediately started comparing the two confirmed consoles. With the thought of the Wii U and how many mistakes have been made clear to the gaming community gamers are beginning to wonder if the PS4 will follow in its footsteps.

Other than the ambiguous title, this article was a good read, pointed good points to why the Wii U is not living up to its potential and why the PS4 potential is growing. Well said, Nintendo expected people to buy the Wii U just because its labeled Next-Gen. Eventhough Wii U came out first, it relied on many other factors besides great specs to sell. Wii U is good and all but didn't give what people wanted in a Next-Gen Wii console. Its still early to say anything bad about the Wii U, but I have my money on Sony to deliver the best for the PS4.

There are a lot of mistakes in Nintendo's way of releasing the Wii U. For one it doesn't match up to what we have now even. It does in some ways, but in most it doesn't....but that's the thing it only matches up to what is soon going to be "Previous-gen".

Nintendo needed to step up its game with the Wii U and they didn't....also having Reggie as their spokesman was not a good idea. Claiming that the Wii U is more powerful than current gen (which is true to an extent but the majority of the population won't see it that way).

Overall the projection sales of the Wii U are about triple of what they actually are so far. Just have to wait and see how it compares this holiday season.

the vita and the wiiU admittedly made the same mistakes but the difference is the vita can still be saved with the release of the ps4,gaikai services and a price drop. whereas the wiiu is not likely to show much improvement. besides vita is a handheld the wiiU is supposed to be nintendo's attempt at "next gen".

Isn't it too early to see it either way? The Wii U didn't suffer from poor hardware or functionality, it suffered a rushed out launch without any significant AAA launch titles in its lineup as well as a post launch drought of physical content. When the PS4 is closer to launch and we have a confirmed list of launch titles, ask that question again.

Nah don't worry anyone who mentions the Wii U here with out insulting it several times gets disagrees. But yeah the only problem I see with the Wii U is the launch library. There wasn't really anything to showcase what the Wii U could do besides maybe Nintendo Land. But since they made a NSMB game it pretty much overshadowed Nintendo land despite being vastly inferior because its Mario. Hopefully Nintendo shows some good looking games at e3 this year that play well.

We can't judge the PlayStation 4 yet because there is no launch library, no release date, heck the only thing we saw were some visuals and a controller. How do we judge anything off of that?

OT: Anyways Sony will probably not make many of the mistakes that Nintendo made with the Wii U however theres one key mistake that they can make and have made in the past.

And thats screwing up the marketing. I hope that this time around Sony has an excellent marketing team that will be able to convince millions of gamers to buy a PS4 because if they dont only the playstation fans will buy one.

You judge it the same way many of the Nintendo fans on this site judged the WiiU based on a Zelda tech demo 2 years ago. The only difference is Sony had the architect come out and explain what was in the PS4 and the plan for the system. We then saw real time demos of a few games, video of others.

As someone said I think the biggest mistake Wii U made was lack of information in many ways, what bothered me though was this... Something about them hiding their specifications or not even willing to talk about them for so long was weird.

It may not seem like a problem but it is definitely shady. It's almost like they don't have much confidence in the system themselves.

The way I see it if I am investing millions in something and want to show it off the the world I am going to explain every little detail about it not going to let others have to figure it out on their own.

Nintendo just rubs me the wrong way with what they do sometimes. They claim they have a Next Generation system but for some reason were so scared to even tell us what was inside it other than the processor, for the longest time all we knew is that the Wii U would have an IBM processor.. I don't know about others but that kind of stuff just ain't right.

Especially when you think of it from a fan type perspective, why wouldn't you want your fans to know what they are buying?

They have long since stopped giving out their specifications and they've made it clear why timte and time again. Its because they don't want Microsoft and Sony(I'm sure their will be back lash for saying "that word") copying them or trying to upscale their tech(ie. make the same part/device only with slightly higher specs.)

Nothing shady about it. They tell those who need to know. What matters to the consumer isn't specs. Whats matters to them is cost and entertainment value.

The main mistake Nintendo was is their marketing. The needed a completely new name for their console to differentiate it from the Wii and do a lot more marketing get more adverts on TV that define the main differences between the Wii and Wii U.

In my opinion the Wii U is a great console, yeah it might not have as good specs as the PS4 but at the end of the day it's not all about being a powerhouse, a lot of the time the best console of a generation isn't the best (e.g. 6th gen PS2 was the best console and it was weaker than both the Xbox and Gamecube). The Wii U has the potential to do really well with what the gamepad's touchscreen can bring to games if implemented well.

I don't see why the Wii U has to be pitted against the PS4, by the end of the 8th gen they'll both have some fantastic games that give experiences that can't be done on the other system so why not just buy both?

I don't see much of a "mistake" here. I think the Wii U just came off on a partially stumbling foot, but it isn't really bad at all. It sales are already better than the 360/PS3 were at launch - it's price is only going to get lower - and the it's game catalouge is only going to grow and flourish.

Once Nintendo advertises the console, when quality software inevitiabely gets released ~ we won't have too worry to much about there being a confusion over "Wii" and "Wii U".

People aren't giving Nintendo the credit necessary. They point the finger to N saying that it's them who's had high expectations ~ when in reality, it's really the ones who are pointing fingers.

The console is only three-months in people. No console has a had a golden-road launch, so calling it a big "mistake" is more of an understatement. It's not competing against 7th-gen consoles, either. It's simply been released in the prime-time of the 360/PS3. Visuals will improve. Remember how early 360/PS3 games looked? Barely any better than 6th generation consoles. NOW look at them?

The PS4 is a rather good console. But it's bored me. It screams "expensive" more than it screams "fun and innovative". I like the specs - a lot of elbow room for devs to move around in, and build with. But it just seems like a heavily upgraded PS3, with the capabilities of a modern-day PC. Good setup, but I want something to really overly~pump me to buy it.

- I'd love to see the reactions of Sony fans IF the PS4 launches in a similar rough patch. I'm not saying it's going to come off bad - since I cannot tell the future.
