Why So Much Hatred From the PC Guys Towards The PlayStation 4?

In my point of view, reason behind so much hatred from PC guys towards PS4 is because they buy really really expensive hardware filled with various kind of bottlenecks (be that OS, RAM, Motherboard, Graphic Card etc)and at the same time game developers not able to utilize true potential of their individual alone capable hardware and offers nothing but average optimized game (as they have to cover broader pc gamerbase using various configuration etc).

So when PS4 comes up with system design architecture that offers more of a streamlined approach with little to no bottlenecks in their architecture design and getting all the love by game developers in optimization department. This upsets them big time because they are not getting the love, priority, respect, service for spending all that much amount of money from game developers.

It's because the image quality on consoles is substandard. No matter what GPU it has, or what resolution it runs at or how good the in-game effects are, the rendering quality is always crap. Angular textures will be blurry and the overall scene will be aliased compared to the sharp output of a PC.

Bottomline Consoles are essentially PCs now, just locked down ones. Sony and MS act as middle men to suckle on royalties for every piece of software sold.

4. So far off on this one.. Look at the specs! Its a PC! The PS3 had the Cell, which sucked for game devs.. A PC needs more resources because you have so many this running in the background, which means that devs still can't get the optimal out of the hardware. This is much easier on console. And every PS4 is the same, therefore its much easier to optimize for the hardware! PC gaming the devs can't optimize for every different setup, and will loose more on optimization..

5. GFX card was terrible on PS3.. Agree.. But we don't know how the PS4s card will be. Biggest problem with PS3 was the RAM, and going from 512mb to 8GB DDR5 is quite a jump, and it will be pretty future minded..

When you buy a console, you don't have to think about upgrading when a new game comes out.. Therefore I love console gaming!

First off, it's called PS4. Not PS4PC. Second, who said that it won't support older games? The PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games so it's very likely that the PS4 will play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games.

PS3 is a 7+ year old technology who can you even compare it with todays PC tech?? It had bad ports because some developers couldn't utilize the system properly. But look at exclusive games and you'll see that it's crap that the PS3 is not capable of great graphics. Just look at Killzone 2, 3, Uncharted 1,2,3, Gran Turismo 5 and tell me the PS3 isn't capable of great graphics.

Consoles aren't PCs still. The main focus of a console is to play video games. The PC's main focus is not to play video games. The difference are very big

Why regulate yourself only to the PS3? It's a known fact that many 3rd party developers underperform, considering your stance on "consoles" you would have at least have the decency to place forward the 360 as your standard. Those games you've mentioned happened to properly "optimized" on the 360 while both the PC & PS3 (especially) got the shaft.

Console optimization goes beyond the standard of an equivalent GPU which is a fact. You can't just choose the "best" out of the cards at that time and then to have selective dissonance to strengthen your position to be infallible in that regard.

In short, everything else you have said is just plain obvious. To wave the PC mantle pretending nobody is aware of it's advantages is just another projection to stroke your ego. You should be happy that the PS4's specs is revealed the way it is as it sets a higher benchmark on the default PC standard than it was previously.

If consoles werent well optimized , how come they can still run even gimped versions of stuff like Farcry 2 , 3 and the likes of Crysis 1-3 .

Sure it's a far cry from a mid to good pc machines , but i have yet to see any pc run those as well with only say 256 to 512 gb of ram .

PC guys hate on consoles cause consoles once robbed their mommas and daddys and in a dark alley. The consoles (I heard it was a PSOne, Gamecube, Saturn) running on such awesome games, thought they, owned everything, and shot the parents, gungnam style. Its confirmed PS4PC wont be running PS1, PS2 or PS3 or even PSN games. To do that they will need to include hardware from the older consoles. Which they cant due to costs.

PS3 is 6 years old, 8800GTX is about 6 years old, 8800GTX beats it. 500usd PCs of today will run cicles around PS3, expect same to happen to PS4 very shortly.

PC gamers arent butthurt infact its a victory for us that now console makers finally embrace a more PC like architecture.

Why do you compare 600usd GPU to a part that is hardly worth 200usd in the PS4? compare apples to apples and no PC gamers dont buy Keyboards, Mouse, Casings, HDs every time we upgrade. My Keyboard, casing, mouse are well over 5 years old and i dont intend to upgrade them either.

Check Steam GMG discounts, console game prices are a joke in comparison, specially since there is no BC on them.

Sure you wont get a PC with 512MB running any of those games, however thats because the PC has an OS to run. It would be silly to expect that to work.

Thats not necessarily a bad thing, since PC by default always has had higher specs. You couldnt design a PC with console Specs even back when current gen launched.

Having said that A PC from PS3s time aka 6 years back will play Farcry 2 better than the PS3, just equip it with a 8800GTX and watch the show. I personally seen 8800GTX run farcry 2 in 1080p Maxed out doing around 35fps.

While consoles do get better optimization its not leagues ahead of PC, like people believe it to be.

PC-only owners have always had a special animosity for Playstation, though. During the PS2 era because it was popular and not even the strongest console. During the 7th gen, they just had a stick in their rear because some fanboys overestimated PS3's CPU in comparison to the rig parts that their daddy bought for them, thus they had to become bitter and hate Playstation at every corner.

Pc gaming is only expensive for idiots that cant build their own pc. If you fall for Dell's marketing scemes or any Major pc builder you should know those pc's have huge markups on the components. Anyone that buys a alienware needs their head examined. All the major Pc builders, geekbox,doghouse, or whoever are crooks. I can build any of those Pc's for 1/2 or 1/3 the price. Build your own pc and it will never cost you more than a console. Because used pc parts sell well. When i upgrade i sale my parts on ebay and i easily have like 600 bucks to build me a new pc for 600 bucks. Alot of time i have 100 or so dollars left over so i can buy a little better gpu,cpu, or power source than i planned.

I run all my games on ultra settings easy. Upgrading is easy if you bought quality parts to start with. Then when those parts go out production the used ones sale for almost retail price of the new ones when they launched. Just look at the nividia cards and amd cards from last year that are out of production they are selling for 300 plus dollars for midend cards.

Oh for example i sold my motherboard on ebay for 90 bucks 2 weeks ago. Im upgrading my rig but the motherboard is 130 brand new and its 2 years old.Yet i still got 90 bucks for it. You can get your money back easy by parting out your builds.

Oh also i sold my AMD 1100T x6 cpu for 180 dollars as well used.

Considering the top selling PC game of all time is 'The Sims', it seems that developers looking to maximize profits are better channeling their energies into the real 'PC Hardcore Gamers':- teenage girls.

Talk about ignorance. Now, I'm not going to argue whether Crysis 3 or Killzone: Shadow Fall looks better. However, I'm sick and tired of people bringing up Crysis 1 all the time. The game is OLD, and by today's standards it looks like fucking SHIT. Yet you guys keep putting it up on a pedestal as if it's some holy grail of PC gaming.

The game isn't special anymore, it's been far surpassed by many games. Get over it. You have to slap on Rygel's 2+ GB texture pack just to bring the game up to today's standards.

Why would I hate consoles? I hate the fact that I can't have all (or any) of them for instance, or say, when I can't get all the games I want for financial reasons. So, why such a strong word that will make PC gamers look like ignorant assholes?

The main "grudge" PC gamers have is with developers and publishers, not the consoles (and their owners). Publishers push developers to make games for the consoles since that market is much more "controlled" in terms of piracy and, since it is already a gaming-only system they have a predetermined audience (number of systems sold = easier to predict and gamble). On the other side, everyone owns a PC. Everyone is a potential gamer though it comes with a price - they might simply pirate out their game or don't have any interest in it what so ever. So, their safest bet is to continue to support the console market and focus all their efforts on making their games BEST on that particular platform. The grudge here becomes apparent - consoles get optimized and well rounded (and unique, system only) games, while PC gamers are handed the shorter end of the stick with horridly optimized and uninspired ports IF and only if the publishers deemed it possible in the first place.

So, there you have it. We (PC folks) don't HATE consoles. WE hate the decision makers that make our gaming desires something short of a nightmare.

Granted, I've always gone with a PlayStation + PC setup because I love the PS exclusives, but I was elated to see Sony announce the ps4 with a reassuring focus on GAMES. How does the PS4 threaten PC territory? Hardware wise? Well, yes, PS4 would be an upgrade for a lot of PC-owners. But you can buy a better specced PC today, and in a couple of years you can probably buy a better specced PC pretty cheap.

I'm a PS3/PC owner. I love both of them, though the last year I've given the PC more love. I got tired of low frame rates, and low res graphics.

I'm waiting for the PS4 and I think it's only positive for the PC, because right now console ports are holding back development of games. With the PS4, porting from console to PC will be much easier and games will be made with much higher specs in mind. I only see this as a benefit for PC.

I will use my PS4 for all the great exclusives and I'll probably use my PC for everything else.

At the end of the day, they're very different platforms. Where the PC is much more oriented towards real-time Strategy/Tactics, mmo/rpgs, fps, puzzle, simulation.

You have games like League of Legends, EVE Online, Path of Exile, iRacing, Skyrim Online, StarCraft, Civilizatio, Rome Total War, The Witcher, Company of Heros, Guild Wars, Sim City,etc. And of course all the cross-platform games. You don't have many of these type of games on console.

I think that hardware-wise a console will never be able to challenge a high-end PC. Games wise, of course, many console exclusive developers have created amazing games on console.

In any case, I'm a PC gamer. I love the frame rates, resolution, and pure raw power my i7 2600k and GTX 680.

But there's one problem, most of MY favorite games were on the PS3. Even if I dropped $5,000 on a PC, I still won't be able to play Uncharted, GT, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, God of War, Killzone, MGS4, Infamous etc. Again, those are MY favorite games, not to any of you ready to disagree.

The only games I play on PC are multi-platform titles and those rare and few special titles like Starcraft II, Civ 5, and pretty soon SimCity. Don't get me wrong, they are great games too. But not my personal favorites.

Now the PS4, is going to be able to deliver both experiences. Incredible graphics and above all, the game play I crave from a PlayStation game.

And there are some Xbox 360 games that I like and even some Wii games that I like.

The point is, the platform is only one element from gaming, the other is the Developers who create those games and experiences.

Really, it doesn't matter what PC gamers think. We've seen the PC retail game market decline in North America from $1 billion annually in 2005 to roughly half that in 2009, all the while sales of PC hardware has been on the decline. There will always be some kind of game market as long as PC's are around, but developers have largely moved on, and the reason is piracy. Can you blame them? Check out this infographic from 2010 regarding MW2. 6 million sales on the console, 400,000 sales on PC, estimated 4 million pirated copies on PC.

As I stated, there will always be developers who will release their products on PC because there is a market there, albeit a shrinking one - but the PC gaming simply doesn't matter anymore. Developers have moved on. They don't really bother with optimizing PC ports, they don't advertise PC games on a large scale - outside of World of Warcraft, LOL and Facebook games, PC gaming is unimportant. If it weren't for Steam or the Free To Play model finding some success on PC, I doubt any bigger developers who have the resources to make console games would even bother with PC anymore.

But no matter which way you slice it, PC gaming isn't the the force it was back in the early 2000's. PC gaming elitists can pound their chests all they want. It's turned into a niche market compared to what it was, with the growth coming from Farmville type casual games that "PC gamers" deride.

Wrong. I know the $1000 I spent on my PC will out-preform everything the PS4 has to offer as of the specs now. Not to mention mod support which will make some games look and play even better.

RAM isn't everything you know. I have 8GB of RAM in my PC now, if I upgrade to 16GB or even 32GB, it's not going to make my games look any better. The PS4 specs are good, but nothing impressive by the time it launches.

That's what most people said when the PS3 and 360 came out. That's what the console gamers and gaming sites used to beat the crap out of the PC back in 2006. Some PC gamers beat the chest around futilely while some just lowered their head and endured as they watched curiously as Valve flopping about getting some new fangled contraption called Steam online.

For years the PC gamers have to endure the "$500 machine graphics=$1000 machine" logic. Until...DX11 appeared along ultra efficient CPUs and GPUs that don't force you to buy the high end ones to play with more power than the previous generations.

So console gamers stopped chanting the "$500 machine graphics=$1000 machine" logic but replaced it with "gameplay is MUCH more important than sick graphic." Try as they might to sneer at DX11 though, it was inevitable.

Now...I'm seeing the "$500 machine graphics=$1000 machine" chant being revived again with the PS4. It'll get worse in April and when both next gen consoles are out, PC is Dead Part 2 will begin.

PC player here due to better customisation options, wider variety of games and my love of tinkering. Even so I welcome the release of the PS4 and the next Xbox as it sets a new minimum standard for games over the next few years as the old consoles were holding things back.

The more powerful the new consoles the better as it will mean the PC will be pushed more as well. That being said I had hoped the PS4 would demolish my existing PC (GTX 580, i7-860 - 3-year-old CPU and 2 year-old GPU), but I think I could run most things fine that have been shown.

Hopefully the Xbox is more powerful.

I don't know much about the new Xbox, but if the PS4 is the most powerful of the three that's a shame.

I have been reading about how more efficient consoles are compared to PCs due to not having to run Windows and other background processes and that they can perform far more drawcalls per second than a PC hobbled by DirectX can even with more powerful GPUs. With those advantages I had hoped for something jaw-dropping considering the advances in GPUs and CPUs since the PS3 and 360, but I haven't seen it yet. But I suppose putting a more powerful GPU in it would cause problems in terms of power consumption, price and overheating due to the smaller cases.

The PS4 just looks like it has caught up with PC graphics; I wanted it to surpass it as it might then give an impetus to PC developers to move beyond Windows holding everything back.

That's my point. Consoles set the minimum standards and a lot of developers don't bother to go past them for PC releases (which is understandable due to the benefits of an unchangeable platform).

As a PC gamer I had hoped the standard would be higher than what has been shown with the PS4 as it won't get much better than that now for PC ports for the next 6 or 7 years. But I'm sure Sony have made it as powerful as economically possible.

PC software sales are crippled by piracy, so its understandable that publishers would rather produce games for the console market. Its a shame that considering how many PC gamers there are that only a relatively small number of games actually find their way to their platform (for the reasons stated above). Ok fair point.. i loved tribes ascend free to play and to be honest i havnt touched my ps3 in a year for games but you gotta admit piracy is rife in the PC community. On a closed system like a console its harder to do (which includes Steambox btw) If i can keep all my existing steam games and take them straight over to steambox with me then im in... I love the fact i can play a game from 8 years ago on any PC pretty much.. makes the rubbish backwards comparability of consoles look even more unattractive..

One thing i would say is that PC games suck for compatibility etc and needing to upgrade every couple of years to avoid bottlenecks etc are why consoles are the future. For a large majority of people, having to download drivers, upgrade components, deal with viruses and all the other shite that goes with PC gaming is why consoles will always be more appealing to the majority of people.. and i dont blame them. Playing a new release and getting 20fps and realising you have to go and spend a couple of hundred on a new graphics card is quite depressing..

PC gaming will always exist as most games are developed on them at the end of the day but console gaming is a much smoother, less stressful experience and i think alot of people prefer that.

Piracy is not nearly as bad as you think. All platforms have piracy, but it may be slightly higher on PC depending on how you look at it.

Piracy is much more complicated than "just stealing" on the PC.

One might pirate a game as a demo, then decide to purchase it. Or they won't, in which case they wouldn't have purchased it anyway. Few demos are on the PC.

Others will buy a game then pirate it to get around DRM that can actually protect the game from those who bought it legally.

Neither of those reasons are taken in to account by those claiming how bad piracy is on the PC.

The "SteamBox" will only be a mini PC for the living room. I suggest you to listen to what Gabe Newell said about it and "closed systems". He made it crystal clear that he is opposed to the closed system. Its the entire reasoning behind his support for Linux.

No offense, but you know very little about PC gaming. Viruses? Drivers? These are the hassles of PC gaming that those whom have no experience with it use. You clearly only think in console terms. If I get a new release and it runs at 20FPS(which hasn't happened yet), I do what every other PC gamer does, adjust the settings (which is often equated with brain surgery by console gamers).

I'll be honest, I like where the PS4 is heading. Being closer to a PC, to me, means better multi-platform games for both systems. I don't hate consoles, its just not for me. On PC I control my overall experience and its my responsibility.

Most pc gamers are better at understanding specs and all that, but most of them overlook at exactly makes a console viable in other words...special.

The ps4 may be using offshelf pc parts and thats okay to pick at, but even so there are parts that are custom. In addition, consoles arent pcs and therefore dont require an operating system like windows to run or there i say hog its memory.

Every aspect of a console is design to simply cater to its main purpose, gaming and nothing outside of that, that requires those fancy specs to be put to the test.

Look, killzone shadow falls is only using a fraction of what the ps4 is capable off doing performance wise. And besides the average consumer who by the way isnt interested in investing continually in the same product outside of content doesnt care. And the simplicity of putting a game is and playing it without worrying if it ill run properly will always resonate with the masses.

PC gaming in my eyes is all about benchmarks, and MMOs and RTS games, everything else at this point in time is preferred on consoles.

PC gamers rarerly fight amongst themselves, even if theres some disparity in specs. Console gamers meanwhile never seem to get along even if the hardware is similar in many ways.

When you build a pc, you are not just upgrading a 200 or 300 dollar graphics card. You also have to consider a motherboard, cpu, ram and all those other variables.

Then they all have to be compatible and you have to make sure the static coming out your body doesnt kill your component. Theres just a bit much a regular person would have to go through just so they can keep up or even brag about running a mediocre shooter like crysis on their rig.
Now, why would anyone would give up what they already have or are getting in a simple package with exclusive content from some of the more recognized gaming studios and publishers in the world for anything else?

It makes no sense, and even if pc gaming were to keep upgrading specs, you could only go so high before realizing that all in all its nothing but a vicious cycle in which top video card makers thrive on.

Its like with anything else in electronics, phones,tvs you name it. everyone wants the best and want to brag about it as well, but time has proven that simplicity and convinience triumph over technical.

Final point is this, consoles are gaming devices and as such are good at that. Pc gamers want to talk about specs and yet their most successful games dont even push the envolope. Blizzard is bringing diablo3 to PlayStation,so what deal with it. Everquest,planetside,dc universe online are games made by SoE one of many Sony branches, now if Activision,EA and Sony wanted to screw you guys they easily do it and then whats left specs and graphics card talk?

I love my PC. I've built a few PC's over the last decade and have upgraded the GPU in them a few more times.

As soon as I boot up after putting that big shiny new card in I feel a little disappointed when I come accross a game that doesn't run smoothly on Max settings after parting with $300-$500 (For the GPU alone). I currently have a GTX670 in my rig. I love it, but in my experience of PC building, I have a lot of doubts in regards to the value proposition on spending such money on a card.

Maybe that's where the anger comes from... Some sorta sense of entitlement from spending all that money on a naked graphics card, when you get a lot more bang for buck on consoles. In the days of PS1 and PS2 it made more sense. There were games that you just couldn't have at all with the specs they needed. Levels would have to be smaller, there would be lesser enemies. Now we're talking about some slight change in visual quality....meh.

I'll still upgrade my PC, but not for a very long time. Not until CPU's stop bottle necking GPUs I'm really enjoying games like the Witcher series, but for the most part, I'm finding PC gaming to be a joyless experience compared to the joys an obsolete PS3 has given me. I'd rather put the money towards games and other hobbies.

Titan doesn't count. It's aimed at the open CL crowd and is purposfully priced out side of the market. It's not meant to drive down prices of Mainstream GPUs. Mainstream 700 series cards won't be much faster than 600 series when you think about it.

Unfortunately they are not and your average console gamer doesn't want to spend time trying to get their latest purchase to run because it not compatible with the latest drivers. You do realize that updating drivers is not complicated right? The only drivers I update regularly update are the GPU drivers, and they take a whopping 5 min and a few mouse clicks to install. They aren't even as necessary as they use to be if you don't have Sli.

Posting a comment here is about the skill level required to update drivers.

Yes, I'm well aware how easy it is to update drivers, for some not so much. What I do mean is that odd title now and then that for whatever reason refuses to boot up or crashes straight after the first cut scene. Those faults that can be fixed by simply changing a setting in a text file or downloading a custom patch.

Many would simply give up, return the game and think twice about buying games in future on the PC.

Personally I'm ok with the PC although I'm overdue building an up to date rig, for others it's a minefield that is non existent on consoles.

However, whenever a console gamer talks about PC gaming, they make it sound like every game has issues. Acting like the settings menu is written in some alien script, then you have to write your own drivers and perform a blood pact ritual to use Steam. There is no end to the hyperbole.

10 years ago PC gaming was complicated. Its far less so now. My issue is making downloading drivers, getting viruses, or Windows into horribly complicated things, when they aren't.

PC gamers don't like the idea of console gamers discussing anything internal about the machines or specs. They feel it is their world and they own it.

PC gamers are the guys who always need to own the latest and the greatest. We all know a few of these guys. They feel that their property defines who someone is. They need to have and to be the best at everything for some reason.

Of course PC high end rigs game the best. They're built with thousands. If I spent thousands on my rig and then PS4 arrived and looked awesome, then I would be bummed too.

Sound logic but not what history has shown us. When current gen consoles came out tons of developers left the PC for a greener pasture. A dedicated hardware that can churn out graphic just like a high PC can with the "a million hardware configuration" problem. Who could resist such an offer. But, a dedicated machine age quickly and soon those developers are coming back to the PC. No matter how powerful a console is, the PC still offer a lot of flexibility that still lures back some of those developers.

Now, with the PS4's directly and completely taking the PC architecture...what incentive do those developers have to actually get serious with PC again regardless of the ease of porting games? The PS4 is still the dedicated hardware that won't give developers "a million hardware config" problems but now it will have the flexibility that used to be the PC redeeming feature. The PC will always have that hardware config problem and piracy will always be dark shadow looming over it so...why would developers want to go back to it when the Ps4 is offering the same PC features but with more stability and a big pile of money for their efforts?

Yes, a similar architecture will make porting a smoother and faster job, I'm not denying that but it is a problem in itself. The publishers/developers would think twice about releasing a AAA game for the PC at the same time as the 720 and PS4. If the games will look similar on all platforms and they will all be released simultaneously, then that mean piracy on the PC go off the roof. All of them will look great regardless of the platform so why bother buying the PC version when you can pirate it? Perhaps that's why I'm noticing there's quite a number of extra copy protection systems being planned for the PS4. A potential smoother multiplat development doesn't mean the PC get the games the same time as the consoles thanks to piracy. Which would lead to developers not really wanting to return to the piracy-ridden PC and stay with the PC-like PS4.

I'm not hating the PS4 but just wondering the numerous potential sides and effects of the story.

PC does move software quite well. Diablo III, as bad as it was received by users, pushed pass 10m copies sold not too long ago. Skyrim PC is well over 5 mil sold. To say it doesn't move copies isn't accurate at all.

Looks aren't everything either. If you want top notch performance on higher settings, get a more expensive solution which has more power and it will allow you to customize away. If you feel you're fine with PS4s offering then... just get a PS4.

Lastly the PS4 is not a PC. A PS4 can't use windows and that's that. You can't type a book report on the ps4. You don't have powerful editing software on it. You can't do anything productive on it because it is a gaming console. Its best use is for gaming.

The piracy argument is moot. Gears of War Judgement is an Xbox exclusive- one month early. Tomb Raider leaked ten days early for consoles. Crysis 3 leaked over a week early for consoles. I know very well that PCs are a lot more powerful than consoles. This is a fact that has been proven many times true in the past. But if there´s one thing that is true about consoles is that they are very good machines for playing games on. Sure the graphics may not be on the same level as the PCs but the game is essentially the same and extremely playable. Ive been a console gamer for many years and i do envy PC gamers since they are able to play the best version of a game but then again i dont envy them because the games i play are equally as enjoyable as the PC version unless of course those games have unplayable framerates.

Anyways even though the PS4 isnt superior to an ultimate gaming PC it is a lot more powerful than the PS3.

As far as I can see, and this has been said many times here, the news that the PS4 and probably the next Xbox will be using modern PC tech is good for everyone. It means developers can finally start building games and engines that take advantage of hardware that exists in current gaming PCs. So potentially PC gamers get better quality games that take advantage of their hardware. PS4 gamers get to experience, to a greater or lesser extent, what all the PC guys have been going on about for years.

As a PC gamer and console owner, I've seen both sides. I appreciate the optimization that goes into console games and think it's probably good for the industry to learn how to squeeze performance and quality out of hardware, rather than be wasteful by constantly shifting to more powerful platforms whenever they need more headway. By the end of a console cycle developers have leanred many techniques for improving the quality of game visuals/gameplay without much of a performance hit - that's a win win situation for everyone as those gains are sometimes carried over into the PC market - FXAA/SMAA anyone?

In terms of PC games, I love my full 1080 res and expensive AA and texture mods, but I've often wondered if these elements were really worth the extra money I spent on hardware. Especially when some games STILL didn't run at 60fps, had bugs, or simply lacked optimization. My last PC ran BF3 on ULTRA at 60fps or above - cost maybe £800. Boy, it was pretty, but having played BF3 on my PS3 for a long time, I can't honestly say I had MORE fun. I just appreciated the visual quality more. The FPS and numbers of things on screen did make gameplay more enthralling, but not to the extent that the console alternative was unplayable. Now, with improved console hardware, the experience should equalize for both parties, making up the gains in visuals and gameplay, at least for a time, until PC hardware inevitably starts to pull ahead and show the way for the next generation of home entertainment machines.

We live in a time where we can always spend more money to get better/richer experiences in every aspect of life - most of the time. But we don't worry every day that we don't own the biggest, best thing out there because, at heart, many people realise that enjoying what life has to offer is a more nuanced and complex experience that simply having 'the best'.

We should embrace the symbiotic relationship between PC and console gaming. The contained and focused development of games for console hardware forces developers to stretch what they can do within technical limitations, ideally conveying the visual gains to PC gamers without a major performance hit (this can be more efficient with both consoles now firmly using PC-like hardware) so they can, in turn, get better bang for their buck and their hardware should last longer. Console games also necessarily focus on content rather than ever expanding technological breakthroughs. Being limited (to an extent) visually should make aspects like storytelling, gameplay and functionality the key selling points of new games, rather than simply having better graphics. PC games will continually test hardware and open up new horizons, inspiring console games to achieve greater things. Eventually it will lead to new console hardware, as we have seen this gen. The process continues...

For those people who love their PC gaming, it's not going anywhere. In fact it's about to get a whole lot better with an influx of much more technologically games. For console gamers, it's their chance to finally see what all the fuss about textures and resolution was about :)

Have you considered that just because the parts are based on certain parts they will have some of the advantages of future parts. For instance, the Xenos in the 360. It had unified shader architecture. No mass market PC GPU had that when the 360 was released. No mass market chip like the Cell existed. Unified Shade became standard in GPUs and some parts of the Cell went into making Power cores for IBM. Right now no one has full HSA. You're a AMD guy, you should know Jaguar cores are probably the closest to that. And just maybe upgrades have been made to the GPU to push HSA further along than is available in PCs right now. And I'm sure a little of the tech in the 8xxx went into a 7xxx for the PS4 and 720. Maybe a lot.

Based on what I've heard, the PS4's hardware is pretty standard from a PC gamer's perspective. The only exceptions are the AMD APU is slightly modified to cater Sony's requirement and the usage of GDDR5 as system ram. Other than that (and the console OS that will be powering it), it's like a PC. Not hating here...just curious about some things:

What happens when AMD decide to (and it will) release their next gen APU for the PC? The new APU will be much powerful that the previous generation so won't that make the PS4 kinda left out so early in the game. Yes, I know some you will cite console optimization and GDDR5 and the usual defensive statements but how will everyone react if it happen? AMD made the PS4's APU to work with GDDR5 so it would be logical for AMD to release some next gen PC gaming grade motherboards that for the first time will use GDDR5 as system ram. It will be expensive but PC gamers will gobble it up regardless (the first gen would probably be hybrid of DDR3 and GDDR5 slots). Sony could have a secret timed exclusivity deal with AMD to not release such a tech for a couple of years but I doubt that they could stop Intel from producing a similar tech on their own (or not since Intel is too busy playing catch up with the ARM chips). Or Nvidia might suddenly releasing a memory expansion card that is just rows of GDDR5 ram modules that you can put into that extra PCI slot.

I've asked another site about how PC gamers will react to the upcoming sequel "PC is Dead 2: Again" when next gen consoles are out so I won't repeat it here. Here I'm just wanting to see how the rest of the industry players respond to the PS4.

The reason why I stick with consoles is mainly because of the lifespan. PS3 is still pumping out amazing games even being more than 5 years old. Also, consoles will go down in price over time while PC's need upgrading and the cost for them is incredibly high. And from what I've heard, the PS4 might even be cheaper than the PS3 which is amazing. I'd make or buy my own PC if I could, but there's no way I can dish out that much money just to play games.

As a person who primarily game on PC, I am actually excited for the PS4 because of its specifications and its upcoming exclusives. I can tell based on the specs and games, Sony are listening to both the developers and their customers, and learning from their mistakes.

Look, I've been a PC/Console gamer for years. The problem I see with PC gamers is that they (myself included) are always chasing visuals...even when a game sucks. Constantly buying new hardware to reach a greater level of visual fidelity. So, over those 5-6 years of a console generation, many PC gamers have spent more and more money and time upgrading their PCs, and tracking down mods. Meanwhile, the console gamer is just enjoying the gaming experience and some increased visual fidelity, as the console generation matures, with a one time cost of the console (unless you get the RROD or YLOD).

I have some friends that don't own the PS3 and their main system of choice is the PC and they're really hyped for the announcement of the PS4.

i am a "hardcore" pc gamer

i play almost 90% of all my games on pc, i do however own a psp, ps3, ps2, ds, wii, 360 and an iphone i rarely game on as well

I have only seen the videos of Killzone and some screenshots (don't even know where they came from), but the game doesn't really look that amazing. The screenshots looked really flat. But I do have to say, the aesthetics of Killzone looked amazing, that opening scene looked amazing (again aesthetically speaking), I wish more games would push for a more 'open world' style where you actually feel like the level is huge rather than keeping to corridor shooters.

Like you fools keep on talking about how our CPU's use DDR3 makes it inferior to the PS4, yet you fools do not realize that PC X86 CPU's are so heavily optimized with prefetch algorithms that even if you adjust the bandwidth to lower settings it will NOT effect CPU performance because the CPU knows EXACTLY what programming data is most likely to be needed, and thus, it will prefetch it far ahead in time before the PC user ever starts to use their software that is RAM bandwidth heavy. Sort of like being a psychic. Case in point, an i7-3770K uses a 128 bit memory controller (dual channel) where as the i7-3820 is a 256 bit memory controller (quad channel), yet the i7-3770K absolutely destroys the i7-3820.

The reason you guys have GDDR5 is because the GPU is part of the CPU that is on the same silicon and GPU's are VERY sensitive to memory bandwidth. Lower memory bandwidth DOES effect GPU performance. GPU's do not have some of the smarts that CPU's have. They also cannot do the following: handle programming code that requires branch prediction, code that is highly serial in nature, or code that always ends up in a random state that is non-repeatable. That is why our video cards use GDDR5 because it is very important for a GPU where as a CPU gains no benefit whatsoever from GDDR5.

Also, you fools go about how our video cards have to go through the PCIE buss that is a bottleneck. The problem is that it is NOT A BOTTLENECK. In fact there is NO DIFFERENCE in gaming performance when putting a PCIE 3.0 capable GPU card into a PCIE 2.0 slot. Google: pcie 2.0 vs 3.0 to see for yourselves. Hopefully, with the education I gave you consolers, you will not make such ignorant statements anymore.

These new consoles will be good for the PC... right now games are being designed with the lowest common denominator in mind (Ps3/360). When that bar gets raised the quality of the titles raises as well. Take BF3 for example... it runs on current gen hardware with major differences on PC but the PC still shares the geometry and map layouts carried over from what the PS3 and 360 can handle. PS4 will never outperform a modern gaming rig but that's not important... whats important is that the games will be seeing after next-gen is released will be lightyears ahead of anything we've seen ported over from PS3/360 this generation. Developers will be making games for DX11 outright instead of having a small separate team making un-optimized effects that bog down performance making the owner run out to get the latest tech (Crysis 3 ropes, BL2 physx, Arkam City physx, Far cry 3 HBAO, the list goes on)

Why won't PC gamers just keep to themselves. They're correct that PCs will always be more powerful than consoles, but just let console gamers enjoy the excitement of a new generation. Better yet, get over fanboyism and own more than one console, I have a PS3, a Wii U, 3DS, and a PS Vita.

The strenght of the average pc, which probably is what most gamedevelopers aim for (as they are allways want to maximise profits) game wise is visual effects as the average pc might have a bit more firepower in them. i5 or i7 cpu for example and might have somewhere between a gt660 to gt670 range gpu. speculation of course, but I am pretty sure most pc owners don't own a i7 3670x with titan sli graphics setup... Vram wise i suspect most pc gamers have somewhere between 2 and 3 gigs of Ram on their respective graphics cards today. that means that even if the vram has a speed of 192GB/s (translates to a theoretical throuhput of 6,4GB of data per second given a 60fps target framerate. In reality these graphics cards can only handle 2 to 3GB og data per frame. simply because the gpu don't have more vram to store the data in.

This is where the true strengt of the ps4 comes in. the ram speed is claimed to be 176GB/s (16 less than modern pc gfx cards). devide this number by the average framerate for consolegames (30 fps) and you get 5,86GB/s theoretical throughput. The ps4 has 8GB of unified Vram, so it can theoretically handle the full throughput in every frame. In reality the effective throughput is a little lower, simply because the cpu and the custom processor that is said to handle backgroundtasks also has to have a little of that bandwith. Still, it should be handle at least 5GB/s. Even at 60fps the ps4 should still perform somewhere between Very high and ultra settings (Compared to pc games / 1,8GB for very high, and about 3gb on ultra)

The better question is why so much hatred from Sony fans to everyone else? I have all the systems, read all the different forums, and by far the most invasive hatred comes from Sony supporters. Sadly, the fanatics are probably Sony's most valuable asset.

The PS4 hate has come from 'everyone else' the moment it was announced.The PS3 was hated the moment it was revealed and years afterwards.Nintendo and Microsoft supporters hate too but they always pretend that they are so much less so. Xbox owners griped and groaned and hated over us having MGS4 on the PS3 for years and then pretended they didn't.Hate comes from all sides.It doesn't come any more or less then any other console owner. In short the strength of the ps4 is details per frame, the weakness is 60FPS. The reverse can be said of the average PC when compared to the PS4. It handles 60FPS more easely than ps4 but it can't double the amount of detail when running 30FPS if it allready uses most or all of the available VRAM (2-3GB average assumed)

I don't hate anybody. I try to look at the evidence objectively. If somebody proves me wrong, then I will admit that I was wrong. I have read a lot of ridicule from pc owers, and admitedly quite a bit of trashtalk from console users. But I will not go as far as to say that the most invasive hatred comes from sony supporters. PC owers seem to be conviced that the pc is invinsible in every way and no amount of evidence to the contrary will make any difference. Sony supportes seems to call pc owers jelous, and that the ps4 will dethrone the allmighty pc. I say the ps4 seems to finally have cought up with the pc (if it was released today. But it will not be released until right before christmass, and a lot can happen between now and then. Is it really so bad that the ps4 might actually have about as nice or sometimes a little better looking games as the pc, even if it is only for a limited time.

i would like digital foundary or someone to make these so called 600 dollar pc's that can run ps4 games and when ps4 comes out they should do side by side comparisons.

The same could be said when the PS3 launched. PC fanatics broke down the PS3 specs stating it was no more than a PowerPC processor. They said the small amount of RAM could never be anything but a bottleneck to the full potential of the console.

PC oriented developers like Valve made an example of the PS3 hardware by releasing a broken game called The Orange Box and flat out refusing to fix it. Why? Well because they never bothered to make it, outsourcing to another company while optimizing the PC and 360 versions for superiority. Then, to rub it in, Gabe Newell expressed how he hated the PS3 and how the architecture made it a waste of time.

Developers like ID released subpar PS3 versions of Rage while ID's John Carmack stated how the PS3 couldn't be optimized further to match the 360, then stating that the 360 is the number one console. Oh, how I remember the early years when all these PC and computer whizzes had all the answers.

They said Killzone 2 could never be done. They said 256 online MMOs could never be done. They said BluRay was never going to win the format war against HD DVD, a format fully supported by Microsoft and PC manufacturers.

Yet the PS3 proved itself in many areas of doubt, most notably in the hardware performance department. Despite what most have said, whether it had been from the media, developers, or the PC pros, the PS3 surpassed expectations of most. Games like MGS4, Killzone 2, GOW3, and Uncharted 3 proved the majority wrong. The PS3 is the only console I've ever known that made the PC supporters look, not only bad, but inferior coming from a group of "superior" gamers.

Let me tell you a story.

I am of average intelligence. I make decent money. I pay my taxes.

Recently, I decided to ONCE AGAIN try pc gaming. I kept hearing from the pc guys that their side of the fence was just so much greener.

And once again I got burned.

I bought a $500 budget gaming pc. Did my research. I would be a mid-tier guy with i3, 4gb ram, and 1 gb VRAM . Nothing special, but a guys gotta eat. Surely this would roast my ps3 .

4 months and countless frustrating nights later I still cannot even begin to get a pc game to run. On top of that I hate the input of keyboard and mouse. Yea, people say buy a 360 controller ...well why not just use the 360 then? What a joke.

All this time and money. I could have Bought 15 ps3 games. Bottom line, if your IQ isnt 1,000,000 and you don't have a masters in computing science, just stick with what's fun - and guaranteed to work- a console.

Not angry. There's just nothing new here to be impressed about. Deep Down looked like it might have something to it, but there is absolutely zero basis to assume it will be good. Don't care about sharing, don't care about the new specs, don't care about the new controller, don't care about Square, Diablo 3, Bungie, or whatever else was shown.

The introduction of new architecture and technology is definitely a step towards the right direction for PC gamers to start praising Sony for letting developers create multiplatform games on a much more efficient and powerful system. This means that PC games whether ports or not will be a step up in graphics compared to the previous gen. But this will eventually die down and PC hate will begin again when the PS4 or Nextbox720 reach the end of the life cycle.
