Will Valve’s Steam Box replace Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo in Gaming?

valve box would mean valve games would most likely be exclusive for valve box. so unless you don't think games like portal 2, and half-life 2 are awesome, it would probably have games too

I buy PlayStation because of gaming experiences I can't find elsewhere. Now that ps4 will support self publishing indie devs. this will bring more pc gamers who love indie games to the PlayStation brand. MS are the only one imo who would be threatened by SteamBox.

the steam box is a niche product that has many non gaming applications. it is also an open platform that allows for many opportunities and is not a dedicated gaming device even though it is very competent at carrying out that task. valve sees the steam box as machine that can be plugged into the tv basically giving you a living room pc with a massive screen this opens a range of multimedia possibilities that way you don't need to buy a smart tv you can easily make any tv smart by adding a steam box to it. this is why valve said they are competing with appleTV and NOT sony+MS.

This is the LAST GEN of Gaming hardware from MS/SOny as we know it!

I know I'll get a trillion disagrees but seeing how Tech power advances every 6 months and Tablets will be as powerful as a PS4PC 6 months after release.......

There is NO reason to continue losing 100's of Millions of dollars making Gaming Boxes.

Sony/MS Gaming divisions will basically be Publishers and you log into PSN/XboxLive and buy console games and play them on what ever hardware you have i.e. iOS, android, PC, tablet, etc..

This is evident by being able to run Crysis 3 PC on a Tablet, the Razer Edge with a Nvidia 640m. Now in 6 months this will be leaped by something else!

also with plans on sticking PC's inside TV's is really the console Killer.

If it'll cost 300$, why not. The problem here is brand awareness. My mom doesn't know what Steam is, but knows exactly what Playstation and Xbox are. They need to gather to casuals, not us. It won't cost 300$ though, and my mom will probably never know nor care what Steam is. And who'll buy this? Certainly not people with high-end PCs and Steam on them.

I am sure they said this thing will cost around £1000.

Anything over £300 is a danger, which is why I worry how bigger loss Sony will take on the PS4 in order to make it mass market friendly.

After their concept conference I think MS will pull the Wallet out to cock block them out of a few exclusives.

So they may cancel each other and it will have sod all to do with the steam box.

it's a PC you plug into your TV. It runs steam tho so no EA games and many other titles are missing too.

it runs linux and you can do whatever you want with the hardware. It is not a console, install windows 7 on it if you want.

Not going to happen. Steam only has around 100 games for Linux and supposedly the Steam Box runs Linux. If developers don't release the game on Linux it'll be disasterous for the Box

Valve as a brand does not resonate with casuals which is cutting out a large chunk of market. So no I do not think Microsoft or Nintendo will get overtaken by a first time hardware manufacturer.

As a console gamer, I honestly haven't paid any attention to the Steam Box. I mean, if I was going to take that route, I might as well just get a full gaming rig.

I just don't have any interest in it; however, it will interesting as a new faction is introduced into the N4G warzone :D

Can someone explain to me what the point of this is? PC gamers already have something (likely) more powerful than it, and console gamers could just use the money to get a decent-to-good PC. There can't be any exclusives as that'd mean cutting out the PC fanbase, which would go horribly. The only use I could honestly see for this thing is if it can play both console and PC games, which is unlikely as most multiplats end up on PC anyways and exclusives are called such for a reason.

I have zero interest in this device. I cant think of any reason to own one. I was never blown away with Half-life and Team Fortress.
Are these the pillars in which this device will be built. I had no Idea these series sell $500 million a year.
