Microsoft expected to reveal its Xbox 720 for the first time in April

A growing number of developers and other industry professionals, some of which are Sony employees, have told CVG that Microsoft will reveal its next generation Xbox for the first time in April.

Makes sense. A few months after the PS4 presentation so Microsoft can think of the ways to give a proper response, and a few months before the E3, so that devs have some time to refine what they're going to show.

Gazondaily4071d ago

The PS4 reveal has no doubt out pressure on Microsoft to make their reveal.

Revealing after Sony gives them a tactical advantage so they should make good of it before E3 and Sony's second showing.

aCasualGamer4071d ago

@cherry_olsen

Not entirely true though. Microsoft can make minor changes now that they've seen what Sony has in store. For example, now that Sony has exclusive deal with Bungie for Destiny Microsoft can do the same. These deals happen can happen any day.

Bathyj4071d ago

They might buy some DLC or something like that, but I dont see them changing anything to major in the hardware. Not unless theyre releasing next year.

Gazondaily4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

"'tactical advantage'??

Are people this unbelievably clueless? "

A tactical advantage doesn't necessarily mean changing the specs of the console. It can be something like presenting the show in a certain manner.

"The embarrassingly bad specs everyone has already seen for the next Xbox are it."

Ah okay, this sentence right here sums up your mentality.

[EDIT] Looking at your join date- another troll account I see. Grow up.

GodGinrai4071d ago

@cherry olsen

Unless YOU know the finalized spec of the nextbox, shut your pie hole.

there are currently two refference designs that have been rumoured for nextbox....one is based on a custom powerPC design the other based around the same jaguar APU as the PS4. seeing as nobody has spilled the beans on the final reference design..it would be wise to just pipe down, mate.

TheSurg4071d ago

@ Cherry_olsen

to remind you. Xbox 360 was supposed to have 256mb RAM which they doubled in the last moment on request of Epic Games for their unreal engine to work well.

fluffydelusions4071d ago

Not sure why people are talking about we know the finalized specs. Sony just very recently added that extra 4gb of ddr5 ram to PS4. Also as above poster stated the 360 was only going to ship with 256 until last minute. Simply put, we don't know anything.

Philoctetes4071d ago

"Tactical advantage?" Come on. Nobody cares about who announced first or who had the slicker presentation. All that matters is what the console does and what games you can play on it.

nukeitall4071d ago

All of this is specs and announcements are nothing more than to get the hardcore gamers excited. Fact is, none of this is likely to really have a big bearing on the console race.

It is more in the long term execution. A good example of this is the 3DS, whom started off very slowly, but with Nintendo's swift management managed to turn it around. On the flip side, the PS Vita whom was almost universally praised at announcement is quickly turning into a flop.

So what have we learned? Execution over claims regardless of who it is, MS, Sony, Nintendo or anyone else.

nveenio4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

Sony's reveal shows that Microsoft really CAN'T improve its hardware to beat the PS4 specs unless they're interested in costing more or losing more money. This is for the simple fact that the PS4 is as good as it can be while remaining affordable for a home console. Any advantage Microsoft wants to make will have to be software based. This means more publisher exclusivity and a stronger Xbox Live (because the next-gen PS4 makes grand promises, which, if delivered upon, will make PSN a total behemoth).

Microsoft won't focus on hardware, only software. If they don't bring the hardcore, they're going to have a rough time beating Sony's offerings.

Gildarts4071d ago

@inveni0
Microsoft has the money to pull that off last minute unlike Sony. It happened to the 360 and i don't see why it couldn't happen again now that they have made even more money from the 360

For those who don't know 360 was gonna have 256mb of ram then they upgraded it to 512 when epic said it won't. be Able to run unreal engine very well and showed them the graphics on 256mb and 512

ABizzel14071d ago

@The realness

Not to be on his side, but the rumored specs. for the Nextbox are likely true. The rumors in the PS4 were spot on besides having 8GB of GDDR5 instead of 4GB.

The Nextbox rumors were given by the same sources, so it's likely they're stuck with what they have besides upping their RAM from 8GB.

admiralvic4071d ago

@ Cherry_Olsen

M$ definitely has a tactical advantage, but it comes at the cost of living up to expectations. Now they don't have to just be good, but be on par or better than what we've seen from the PS4. Even if the specs are in fact final (some people seem to think that better specs = better games), they could have a stronger showing of games or more interesting features to beat Sony. A lot of what you will see is them announcing comparable features to the PS4 and announce things that might make them look better than Sony. For instance being backwards compatible.

@ Nukeitall

The 3DS was actually praised / viewed highly after its initial showing. So much so (or at least logically so) that it ended up with the absurd $250 dollar launch price. The 3DS also followed the Vita in terms of lack of games, sales and support at the start. The only difference is that Nintendo had to drop the price and is a little more established. Give it some time and the Vita will come back.

Deputydon4071d ago

Microsoft will almost certainly show the actual Console. A lot of people will consider MS to actually be the first to reveal considering they will actually show what the console looks like.

Either way, I expect Sony to have the best console, yet again.

Jockamo4071d ago

The reason why MS thought it strange to not show the actual console is because visual aesthetics are just as important as brand recognition. This has been a cornerstone to MS's marketing of the 360. Always show the console. Always show the console. Definitely less so w/ the PS3. But marketing research goes hand in hand w/ the research of the technology. It's almost as if Sony didn't finish deciding what the thing would look like, so they couldn't even show a prototype of the actual device. That's why it was weird and, quite honestly, I'm glad MS called them out on it.

greenpowerz4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

We have no idea what an motivated company can do with cash to changed things at the last minute.

We are also assuming when these new consoles are actually going to be out vs what is rumored or said.

360 specs were changed late because a developer wanted more RAM for GEARS (((LOOKS LIKE SURGE ALREADY SAID THIS)

The mistake is assuming the PS4 is or was the most powerful console based on old leaked info and rumors that are false or outdated.

-What matters is that the 360 was wildly successful

-MSFT made alot of cash

-360 price was never dropped much due to demand

-MSFT has so much revenue coming in they can take a massive hit from the 720 launch price.

-MSFT wants to use the xbox as a platform for all their products insuring the 720 has to be basically a Home theater PC(very powerful)

-MSFT purchased lots of studios and had them all focus on the 720.

-xbox 720 will be something very different from anything we have ever seen.

} This is why Sony changed the specs in the PS4 to slightly out do the old outdated specs that were leaked from MSFT.

There was an article on N4G about a month ago that had supposed PS4 devs saying Sony had 4 gigs of memory at first but changed the specs to match the leaked specs of the 720 that had 8 gigs. Clearly Sony thinks they one uped MSFT not considering those where old internal plans.

For all we KNow the 720 is more PC with 10 gigs of ram and has a subsidized payment plans(MSFT already testing that with 360) for a more PC-sh SKU like what was rumoured

GraveLord4071d ago

Not really. Revealing after Sony is a disadvantage. Like it or not, Microsoft is reacting to Sony. Sony made the first move, PS4 is the first next-gen console revealed and developers love what Sony is doing with the system. Expect PS4 to be the lead platform next-gen.

greenpowerz4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

So is Sony reacting to Nintendo then? As if being first to reveal something can't be an recation to others that have not revealed yet LOL

You do know going first is the ultimate recation right? MSFT went first this gen reacting to Sony's dominance of the past.

Nintendo and Sony are reacting to MSFT's dominance this gen. MSFT has forced them to move on.

You really think a company only gets concerned when somebody goes first? A company that forces others hands also knows they are a force to be reconed with as well as needing to be ready to defend that dominance.

Anyway I'm not buying the statemnt from the Sony devs saying the PS4 reveal caused mayham at MSFT.

MSFT probably already considered they would force Sony to jump the gun getting the first hype going.
Sony doesn't even have a console, not just cosmetically either but it's basically in concept on PC.

Ju4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

MS did not show the 360 at E3 2005. In fact those were all locked away boxes and supposed to be souped up PowerPC (Macs) at the time. Google it. MS has a history to fake their way through press events (Kinect "choreographic" anyone?), but yet this is always OK with them and their fans. I don't really care, tbh. I made up my mind already, won't get both and what I saw is sufficient to say, I made a decision already. Go figure (no surprise there, I guess). Call me a fanboy, doesn't really bother me (you people have made up your mind a long time ago anyway, so what does it matter).

MS can't change the specs, either. Not much headroom for what they did. Not sure if they will have the muscles to add more CUs to the GPU; this is probably in range of possibilities. But adding RAM is one thing, re-engineering a chip when you should actually be working on that BOM to kick start production by mid of the year to fulfill supply and demand for the holidays is another. Especially because MS went the complicated route with their chipset design. This is locked down and done, they can't just pop in another GPU - if they really want to release this year. And they can't change the way the memory works without throwing the whole concept over board.

MS has a new Kinect. And this is just the wrong focus. It's a nice add on, but not the core (at least for me, who knows what the majority wants). They invest almost as much into this thing as into the console itself; not sure if that's so smart; and eventually it is nothing new.

Gaikai integration in PSN is the biggy here; maybe not really visible for some, but this will make a whole online experience, you'll see. (I'm not talking about a Gaikai client, but how this works with Vita, tablets, phones, and the instant feature in PSN - maybe they stole that from MS. Who knows).

UE4 debut on PS4, so that is also some for of guarantee that those "cheap" ports will do just fine now.

And Green, sure MS forced Sony to do what they are doing - but I guarantee you they were shocked they actually pulled that off.

And about the showing...I can just tell you that there are actually devboxes for the PS4 - not boards in a PC case;) Just saying.

Hey, and speaking of "forcing". If MS shows us something in April, I am sure that they were "forced" by Sony to not let them sail away with all the buzz they are getting right now. I'm sure this wasn't planned.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

Foe all I know sony could of made up the specs! Maybe it's 10gb ram.. Who knows sony showed nothing and they might be waiting for MS to show the box so they can try to make a better looking design.

Sony seems to be trying to throw MS off..

That-Guy4070d ago

So all that Sony needs to do now is keep its hype going. And around Microsoft's event pitch in extra info to steal some of their thunder.

Mikeyy4070d ago

I would like to leave some food for thought that brings some validity to cherry_olsen's statement.

Think way back when the Xbox 360 released, and the PS3 wasnt released for another year afterwards. You would naturally think to yourself that they can look at the Xbox 360s hardware, and spend the extra year beefing it up and making sure they out do it, but something happened, they didnt. Not even a RAM upgrade. WHY? Because you can't make last minite changes to the architecture so close to release. Developers rely on the final specs and completely changing that would put them well behind and cause them to possibly miss launch.

What I'm getting at is the leaked specs are going to be accurate, and Microsoft doesnt have the time to change any major components. Thats what the last 7 years was for. You can't gut the whole damn system and upgrade it all in the last 7 months. You have to start production of the parts during that time.

So don't expect MS to announce 8gb of GDDR5 and the Titan GPU come april. It's too late, even if they wanted to spend the money, there is no time.

MrMister4070d ago

Sony should have waited for M$ to go first. Like they said they would do. The only other reason for Sony to go first is if they also plan to have it in stores first. But who knows...

Viper74070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

Sure there's slight tactical advantage, but considering how SuperDaE leaked the Orbis details with most of the info being spot on, I think both of the manufacturers have pretty good idea what the other is after. (he leaked Durango info as well.)

It's like poker where suddenly the 3rd player picks the cards of the other two and throws em on the table for everyone to see.

but unlike in poker, you can't just quit the game and back your bags.

bicfitness4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

From your article: "a core AAA shooter experience using Kinect." Nothing else is known about the rest, but I bet at least one more is Kinect based - they need to recoup their costs and are determined to shove the peripheral down everyone's throats.

Do you read what you post? Judging from how successful - read: not successful - Kinect has been with core gamers and for core games, I don't know why anyone is excited for more Kinect 2.0 shovelware.

Also, a significant portion of MS' "next-gen" development went into that massive television/ advertising/ cross-media studio that they opened. So if you're expecting a tsunami of awesome 1st party AAA games, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

DARK WITNESS4071d ago

it could be, or it could be a very big disappointment depending on your expectations..

we will have to wait and see.

"AAA shooter experience using kinect"

Im not going to state my opinion on this, I want ALL OF YOU to show your opinions.

Agree on this comment if you're happy with a AAA shooter experience using kinect.

Disagree if you'd rather it was just a AAA shooter experience.

JackBNimble4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

@ hazardman

how much of the ps move did sony showcase at the ps4 reveal?
That's right, next to none... besides the one segment.

I am willing to bet that 90% of MS 1st party studios will be nothing but kinect... just wait and see.
Looks like it's going to suck being an xbox fanboy next gen , especially if you're forced to be online to play anything!

Awesome news
I hope ms releases a great console
But one thing that's gonna justify my purchase is free online gameplay
Common ms get with the trend Sony and Nintendo do it

Cueil4070d ago

wouldn't mind basic free service... with all the extra being under a paid service

AngelicIceDiamond4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

Noooo that's so far!? Late March at least. I guess MS will stay diligent, focused, and finalize their hardware. Until then, keep the PS4 news rollin for the mean time.

user39158004071d ago

Keep the trolls guessing on what will be lol... Let sony and nintendo know whos got the football. Suspense its the mother load of all trolls, so keep them waiting until the final blow.

I know what you have, would you like to see mines? lol...

If the leak was correct from superdae, there will be hardly any diference at all, except for speed. Problem with that its on ram, but even high end pc all they need is 8gb of ram and a 6 core to run the most up to date pc game. Both sony and MS will be closed together more similar than ps3 and 360 cause of the same company providing same cpu anf similar gpu. At the end of the day both will be PC ports to each other.

I think MS will have the most innovation this gen, sony showed nothing besides high harware spec and outdated remote thats been around 15 years and now add another 8 years to ps4 remote ugh...

Plasticgearsolid4070d ago

if they announce their console its not going to be at an event likes Sony's its going to be just a statement since its so close to E3

WiiUsauce4070d ago

I hope so!!! I can't wait for Microsoft to put all these Sony fanboys in check.

Sony pulled it off and still has plenty to show at E3. So, I don't see why Microsoft couldn't do the same.

ZeroX98764071d ago

they got 4 New IP to show, so I'm hoping to see maybe 1-2 of them and some third party games. Maybe even BF4? And we all know that even with 4 new IP, microsoft won't abandon their old franchises, so maybe a sequel from one of them?

hazardman4071d ago

I like your amazing streak.. I never seen a more lopsided vote. I like it, 31 in a row.

maddfoxx4071d ago

Pretty sure both Sony and Microsoft are saving things for E3. Sony can announce the price point and any bundles that they may be looking to sell. They will probably show the final design of the console along with demos of the games that were shown at the ps4 announcement. SE even said something about the next Final Fantasy being at E3 (I hope its FF: Versus). I dont own a 360 this gen, but I'm still excited to see what Microsoft will show. I'm still amazed the Microsoft managed to rack up more JRPG's this gen.

UnholyLight4071d ago

Sony showed even more than I expected but there's still LOTS left on the table to show.

brave27heart4071d ago

E3 will be the place final specs, release dates and prices are nailed down. They can show the console off and still have plenty for E3.

SDF Repellent4070d ago

Dude StrongMan, do you even think before you type?

How about Sony, what will they show at E3 since they already reveal the PS4 already. Your PS3 defense force mates can't even give you an "Agree" because of how silly that comment is.

Hicken4070d ago

You were on the right track... for about three seconds.

There's still PLENTY surrounding the PS4 that can be revealed. Launch games, entry price, the actual design of the system, details surrounding the online, and more.

Yes, Microsoft obviously has EVERYTHING they can show at this point. But Sony's not out of cards to play.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1012d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref2d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde2d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19722d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville2d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21831d 19h ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref2d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan2d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0071d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19722d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref2d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde2d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19722d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19722d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier2d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto2d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21831d 19h ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 13h ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Could Xbox Soon Become The Next Dreamcast?

Microsoft's future in the video game space is murky right now, so let's break it all down.

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga14d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9014d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7214d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga13d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88313d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218314d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook713d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer14d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer13d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

fr0sty13d ago

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

JBlaze22613d ago

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Not sure about that. It's been two decades and I still think about Power Stone, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Seaman and others, but I'm not sure I'll remember Xbox Series X/S games in a few years from now... Maybe I'll remember about the franchises that the Xbox brand spawned, but I don't believe that the Xbox Series lives up to the late Dreamcast or even to the Xbox name itself. I do have great memories about the 360 with Blue Dragon, Gears 2 and Lost Odyssey though

isarai14d ago

Nah, sega actually makes good games

Becuzisaid14d ago

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

Profchaos14d ago

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

Becuzisaid14d ago

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Profchaos14d ago

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
