Sony Flexible on PlayStation 4 Cost - IGN

Abandoning proprietary Cell architecture allows company to be competitive on price.

Sony is making a significant leap forward with the underlying technology in the PlayStation 4, but according to Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, it isn't limiting the company's ability to be nimble in terms of the console's cost.

Straight from the horse's mouth. Those folks in other threads going off with $600 price tags are totally off base. Read the article and note how non-custom parts are CHEAPER and EASIER to fabricate. I still say that they waiting to see what MS announces for a price tag, which they will then match or undercut.

One SKU at $399, one more at $499 perhaps. I don't see them charging over $500.

Yea people heard 399 and 450 from rumors...

Hydrolex4080d ago (Edited 4080d ago )

400 is a reasonable price honestly

Cell is out, Blu-ray is no more expensive like when it came out

I don't give a damn about a headset, just bundle that PS4 with Uncharted 4 or Killzone or Watch Dogs or GTA V and I will be set, just one of those games

s8anicslayer4080d ago

I agree, I think that anything over 500usd is suicide and is sure to not sell quite well Sony knows this with the PS3 and they will not make the same twice.

HammadTheBeast4080d ago

I'll probably wait for a price drop myself. PS3 has more than enough steam left.

wolokowoh4079d ago

I don't see the reason for the disagrees. I don't think he was saying we don't need new consoles but rather he personally was not going to buy until it was cheaper because PS3 is continuing to be supported. Three new JRPGs this year, an amazing exclusive lineup for the first half, and most PS4 titles like Destiny and Diablo 3 were also announced on PS3. Obviously those are better on PS4 but the PS4 is still kicking. Anyways I'm not buying a a PS4 until sometime in 2014, maybe even 2015 depending on how poor I am when "sometime in 2014" gets here. I still have this huge back log to go through on PS3 and just do not have $400 or more to just drop on a new console. I may have an extra $400 next year but this year I have to buy PS3 games.

I agree...I know why everyone thinks there will be a high price tag because of the 8GB GDDR5 memory inside the system is expensive, but that is why they opted to go with a custom-designed AMD "Jaguar" CPU+GPU chip, to pack enough horsepower and high-end specs while still maintaining a low manufacturing cost.

Very smart to go with AMD's brand new line of APU's as well.

I think most people, like myself realize that Nintendo takes a loss on the Wii U at $350 per console, a lot of that is the controller, but Sony's new controller doesn't look cheap.

I'm not saying $800, but I wouldn't doubt a SKU for $450-$599. A lot of people remember the $599 PS3, but there was a $499 model too. I personally think anything over $400 will be a tough sell for a while.

Rainstorm814080d ago (Edited 4080d ago )

After the PS3, I think Sony will shy away from the infamous 599.99 price tag at all costs...even if that means selling at a loss...

I don't think PS4 will be over 499$ unless bundled with a Vita

HammadTheBeast4080d ago

Nintendo's controller has a big-ass screen and it's about 6-7 inches. PS4 has a touchpad, no screen however.

Jek_Porkins4080d ago

I think Sony wants people guessing $600-$700 so when they lay the $450-$550 number on us people wont be outraged. Sort of what they did with the Vita, everyone thought it would be $400 and when it ended up being $250 everyone was relieved.

I cant afford more than $400, so take it for what it's worth.

bicfitness4080d ago

If they're trying to telegraph $600-700 just to "shock" us with a low price, articles and quotations like this serve no point.

$399 and $499, 2 SKUs, you can hold me to that.

sashimi4080d ago

Sounds good to me, the better priced the console is the more launch games i can pick up.

Workshyskiver4080d ago

They clearly will wait to see what Xbox is priced at and will adjust the cost in either direction to what they can get away with.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos3h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
