'Aliens: Colonial Marines' has biggest launch of 2013 in UK

Sega and Gearbox Software's Aliens: Colonial Marines landed at the number one spot of the UK all formats chart in its debut week, beating out major players like Dead Space 3 and FIFA 13.

Can't say I'm surprised - regardless of reviews the subject matter is always going to be compelling.

For the little I played of it this weekend though, I can't say I was blown away - very simple, very stupid, fun. Glad I didn't buy it!

I was never expecting this game to be amazing, to be quite honest I knew it wouldn't even be good, it was quite apparent from game play video's. I purely just got this game to play coop with my friends, but I was never expecting anything this atrocious!!

It's bound to move copies, no matter what the quality of the product itself.

I can't say I am for supporting the shadiness that surrounded its release, but people are free to spend their money however they wish.

Do you think Gearbox had this planed from the start? Get the Aliens licence, palm the game off to an outside source and use Sega's cash to fund Border lands 2? Only Time Gate's work on ACM was way poorer than expected.

IDK, either way we all got cheated, Gearbox had the chance of a lifetime to produce an Aliens game that did justice to the source but F'd it up big time by not really giving a shit...

Honestly, I feel Borderlands ended up bigger than they ever imagined and they wanted to support its 'sure thing' sequel.

There's no real doubt that they had put some real time into developing the game themselves. Around half, or a little under, if what I hear is to be believed.

They shelled out the work to another developer. One with a decent enough back catalog, but they simply didn't deliver. This stuff happens. I'm not saying I approve, but its been done before and can, sometimes, work out.

The way they sold it as this huge thing and a true Gearbox game is just shameful though. Not to mention sending out an entirely different experience - one that was much better than the final release - to media outlets for early viewing is, again, shameful as well.

At the end of the day, this wasn't big on my list. Like many movies that I should have watched already but haven't, I have yet to watch any of the Alien releases. This had no brand recognition for me. My one friend, however, is very much a fan of the series and had this one preordered for months. A preorder he smartly didn't complete once he learned of the quality of the release.
The way that Gearbox, and to a lesser extent Sega - being that I doesn't seem that were aware of everything taking place in development - handled this whole situation was just pathetic and they deserve all the hate that comes with it.

They preyed on fan loyalty and used predatory tactics to try and get early purchases and preorders before people realized the game wasn't up to snuff.

I feel ashamed of my fellow countrymen....haven't we all learned about licenced games by now? There are the odd exceptions, but they're just that, exceptions.
All they've done now is send the message loud and clear - "We will buy any old crap with a licence attached...screw quality!"

This game is going to sell well just off name alone. Too many fans of the fiction "want" to believe its better than it is...and in some instances its not horrid. I found the MP pretty fun, but the sp game is absolutely trash compared to other shooters.
