Crysis 3: 4 Reasons Next-Gen Consoles Should Be Worried

David Lynch: ''Crysis 3 on PC looks totally jaw-dropping.

That shouldn’t really come as a major surprise, Crytek’s series is known for bleeding edge technological innovation, but with the series making the jump to consoles with Crysis 2, there was a change in creative direction that didn’t quite hit the mark in the same way as the original PC game.

With Crysis 3, Crytek is ready to reclaim its ‘you wish your PC was powerful enough to play this’ crown and with next-gen consoles just over the horizon, now is the perfect time to remind gamers why the PC will always have the edge over consoles.''

I own kz1-3. You guys know that it has murky graphics and low resolution textures right? It's never been a gaming benchmark when it comes to eye candy. Crysis has been a benchmark for years. I never understood why a lot of people rave about Killzones graphics when it's average at best.

Uncharted 3 and GoW have good graphics. Hell even Gears of War 3 has better graphics. Killzone graphics are overrated.

RumbleFish4076d ago

Killzone 2 and 3 have had great gfx for current gen's consoles. On top of that they have made really good design and have worked with some visual finesses to let the games look as good as possible on that hardware.
The games have never been a match to the gaming benchmarks on pc though. How could they?
What many console only gamers never accept is that their hardware is old the day it releases.
But why so much buzz about those things?
Killzone 2 and 3 have been by far the better games. Crysis has been a benchmark. Gorgeous graphics, but when it comes to how the games played, Killzone wins easily. It's almost like comparing different things.

morganfell4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Killzone 3 has the best lighting engine around...period. Even Crysis takes a beating in that department.

It will be interesting to see what the guys fromm GG bring to the table with the PS4. I am not positive it is just Killzone 4 since they stated they were working on a new IP last year.

Some people like Crysis. Okay, I am not holding that against them. However for me Crysis always felt like a game in search of heart. The AI is shoddy, predictable and absolutely no fun. I do not know what to call the aliens because it looks as if the design went in 5 different directions at one.

The game comes off like the movie Battleship.

Top name involved? Check.

Flashy effects? Check.

Budget? Check.

Down your throat advertising? Check.

Forgettable? In a new York minute.

Crysis 4 will bitch slap KZ4

Sarcasm4076d ago

Pootie Tang will bitch slap everyone here with no powder.

Norrison4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

How? Killzone 2 and 3 look much worse than crysis 1 and crysis 1 is a sandbox.
I don't know why people overrate killzone's graphics so much, it's ugly color filter and low res textures must look amazing for console gamers.

trancefreak4075d ago

I think with Killzone 4 we can see in short a proper earth like invasion or the vekta invasion in lush graphics. Helghan looked like mars but; I loved the hell out of killzone 2-3; They were my favorite games on ps3 on the FPS genre.

"PS4 will bitch slap Crysis3"

I doubt that at least not at lunge, maybe a year or 2 after yea but lunge it will match the graphics if anything, And you are a fool if you believe other wise.

but even I must admit that I think it really foolish to compare a PC to a console any how.

Dam people read fast I had 1 agree and 2 disagrees before i even got threw editing but any ways to the people who disagreed with me you are a true fan boy if you really think at lunge you are going to see games the same level as Crysis 3 running on in high end pc at max, you people need to get real why that would be nice don't get your hopes up just to be disappointed. now you may get a bunch fake CG videos that they claim is real time like they did with the ps3 but that's about it, If either Sony or Microsoft lunge with a game on crysis 3 level interns of graphics I will be overly impressed let alone topping them.

extermin8or4076d ago

*launch and the exclusives might look better than crysis 3 it really depends on the specs of the machine, but the thing is we're at that point where graphics can only improve so much in the near future because every increase is going to need vast amounts more power for the most incremental increase. The 3rd party games are all going to look about the same which is pretty damn amazing if square enix's realtime tech demo, and Unreals tech demo's are anything to go by- just look at watch dogs footage or mgs peace walker; that's just a step down from cgi- the real improvements will be in AI, number of characters on screen, size of the worlds etc and you are right consoles improve massively in terms of graphics over their lifetimes, more so than any pc i've ever owned does without being upgraded etc :P (just go compare Resistance:Fall of Man to Assassins Creed 3 or The last of Us...) I played crysis 1 in ultra on my standard spec pc last night- and it actually looks bad compared to what can be done today :p but either way I like pretty graphics but this gen is going to be all about the services and the online infrastructure/delivery models and pricing- atm steam has it nailed and Sony and Microsoft need to follow suit; ninetndo seem to be in their own little box their lateness to the online gaming world and slow speeed to adobt gametags instead of friend codes etc to me is seriously suggesting an inability to keep up with the modern technology (and I don't mean as in whats actually in their machine). That said I hear mii verse is quite good :p

If devs will take the time to optimize for next gen consoles - and not just slap PC code onto them, we will be up for quite some surprises.

Optimization will start on the API level. The risk I see is that the next gen consoles have so much power that you can simply port PC code over.

But it will require even more going into detail and optimize for consoles. That is using the HW to it's fullest.

Reducing draw calls was mentioned quite often before. And what that means is, that neither desktop DirectX nor OpenGL will be able to compete with that. But a dev will have to go a little bit deeper and implement some "proprietary" code how they handle vertex buffers, lighting etc. Reducing draw calls shifts more work into the game. Which will in return result in much better performance.

Both MS's Dx for the next XBox and libGCM have very low overhead down to the metal APIs which will squeeze quite more out of next gen consoles than just "another mid-high-end" PC. I think people will be up for quite some surprises with those new titles.

If Quantic Dream can - without a doubt - squeeze the best facial expressions out of any game on the aging PS3, then it makes me wonder what they can do with a much faster HW.

I wasn't impressed from the Crysis 3 MP demo. It's more of the same, really. Overpowered soldiers makes it almost unplayable. I didn't really enjoy that. The "cloak" gameplay is quite annoying. It's still pretty but it's not the end it all game; not even visually. Visuals are top tear, not denying that. But other games can match that, still.

Blacktric4076d ago

"Trying to sell it with graphics all over again."

Were you expecting something else from a company that made a distribution deal with EA? Crytek has become another shallow, soulless company that keeps bullshitting their fanbase. They did it with Crysis 2 and are now doing it with 3. I wouldn't expect anything more from them at this point.

Knushwood Butt4075d ago

Well, I played a ton of KZ2 and KZ3, and recently beat the port of Crysis on the PS3, which was the first time I've played it.

Crysis was a major letdown with broken gameplay due to the fact that you can beat the entire game easily using cloak mode, while armour mode is utterly useless. Story and characters were meh too. Everyone hates Rico, but at least he's memorable. I only beat Crysis a few weeks ago and the most memorable thing about it was that turtle you see after swimming to the beach near the start.

Oh yeah, I beat it twice too.

Also, worth mentioning that on my second play through, the buggy POS that Crysis is screwed up during the final aircraft carrier section, and jumped straight past the section where you pick up the TAC cannon or whatever it is called. End result being that the game forced me to go up against the last boss without actually having the weapon that you must have in order to defeat it. GREAT!!!!!

First of all, Crysis 1 and 2 didn't jeoperdize current gen consoles at all. Plus, I'm sure next gen will have much more to offer than just incredible graphics. I really don't see why they should worry.

4076d ago
konnerbllb4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Crysis 1 on console was dumbed down.

Play Crysis 1 on pc with the highest settings and resolution and you will see why it's always been the benchmark game.

extermin8or4076d ago

yeah my 400 pound laptop can do that, it looks dated as hell- i can see why at the time it was a benchmark game but just like if I put uncharted 1 in my ps3-it looks old, it's a 7 year old game and well it doesn't look 7 years old more like 5 years old but it still can't hold a candle to any of the releases these days...

xPhearR3dx4076d ago

It really was. I bought Crysis 1 for 360 when it came out, but I recently switched to PC gaming and the difference it's quite remarkable. People who don't have a high end PC really don't know what they're missing.

I always knew PC games looked better, but until I got my own machine and saw/played it for myself, the difference was incredible. You really have to experience it to see just how much better it really is. Not just graphics either, FPS makes a HUGE difference.

EbeneezerGoode4076d ago

Agreed. Crysis 1 is still amazing looking, and plays great too.

Too many people who never actually played it on a good PC slate it for only have decent graphics and no gameplay. As Crysis fans know that is far, far from the truth. It had some of the best gameplay in any FPS so far. Loved every second of that beautiful game. Will reply it through again soon with new GPU on ultra everything at super high res...

Fil1014076d ago

This type of article is getting stupid, seriously nobody knows what the next gen consoles will be capable of so how can people say that they should be worried.

BitbyDeath4076d ago

Crysis 3 should just work on topping Crysis 1 first before it worries about nextgen.

thecurseddevil4076d ago

crysis 3 looks shit compared to the witcher 3.

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa127d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno127d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast126d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial126d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!

Yep. Wait a couple of years and get this level of performance on a RTX 4070 or 4080 at a much lower price.

Killer73nova1274d ago

And wait a couple more years for rtx 5070 or 5080 at a much much lower price

Yung-T1274d ago (Edited 1274d ago )

That headline is a tad misleading.
The rig stated in that YouTube video is extremely high-end (ryzen 3950x oc, 32gb etc) and utilizing special water-cooling solutions, loops with pumps etc.

This rig easily costs 5k+ and a normal pc with a RTX 3090 wouldn't get close to these framerates or sustainable temperatures.

Aggesan1274d ago

Who has a "normal" pc with a RTX 3090?

Yung-T1274d ago (Edited 1274d ago )

There's still a difference between a high-end GPU+CPU and a custom-made water cooling system including a Waterloop&pumps etc though, it allows for much higher performance due to the better temperature management that would fry the GPU&CPU with normal builds.

lonewolf101274d ago

That's why people need to read the articles, most headlines are just to get you to click.

Rainbowcookie1274d ago

You would think yes, but honestly does it happen often 🤣 enough

I_am_Batman1274d ago (Edited 1274d ago )

Most of the threads of the 3950x were barely utilized and none of the games that were tested allocated more than ~12.5GB of system memory. Gaming at 8k is pretty much as GPU bound as you can get so you won't need a water cooled high-end CPU or 32GB of memory.

Psychotica1274d ago (Edited 1274d ago )

How does the cost of the PC make the headline misleading?

Father__Merrin1274d ago

Mega powerful video card but the games you can play on that card are all available elsewhere. I want to see compelling pc only goty material titles ASAP

Psychotica1274d ago

And where else can you run them in 8K or even in 4K with the same level of performance?

averagejoe261274d ago

Who cares? Nobody has 8k screens and the majority don't even have 4k screens.

This push for pointless high resolution is ruining progress. Give us better framerates, lighting, physics, etc. Stop wasting power on needles 8k.

lonewolf101274d ago

@averagejoe26

There are people with 8k monitors though.

Bender65021274d ago

And still we can't escape 30fps.

JCOLE131951274d ago

I mean given the fact the games are running at 8K it doesn’t surprise me...

MrDead1274d ago

DLSS 2.0 no doubt has a big part in this too, The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding run like a dream on my 3080, 4k ultra set to 60fps no drops or stutters and the system runs very quiet. Playing Borderlands 3 on badass settings, Red Dead or Division 2 on 4k ultra all run great (Red Dead has a few drops below 60fps) but my PC is working a lot harder on games that don't utilise DLSS, my room warms up nicely when playing those games.
