Don't care what anyone says, Smash isn't a traditional fighting game. May as well call Powerstone and Playstation All Stars fighting games. They're more of an arena fighter /party game.
Including Smash Bros in a list of fighting games, is like including GTA in Racing games.
The designer of the original Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 shows us the prototype that started it all.

In away this hurts Nintendo Smash Bros has some dedicated fans. What better way to help build hype and sell more of the game then showcasing it at EVO.

He clearly shouldn't play Metal Gear Solid titles...

Indeed some mandatory tutorials are a real pain in the a$$, but it shouldn't be widespread like he wants too.
Which is probably why the Brawl story was crap.
Personally,
I have no problem with either-
Provided that the story and the gameplay are good.
Just as long as they make Cut-Scenes Skip-able and Re-Watchable.
Nintendo's own Fire Emblem has a lot of Story, but I enjoy it. Hmm... The second one got rid of the some of the Base Camp conversations, I hope this was not in an attempt to streamline the game.
