Devil May Cry Revitalizes a Tired Series

After Firaxis Games released XCOM: Enemy Unknown last fall it became a lot easier to get excited about reboots of long-established videogame series.

You mean

"How Devil May Cry took a step back for the series"

wishingW3L4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

or how NT drove it into the ground sales wise.

Root4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

That aswell :)

Seriously the sales prove though that the game is terrible, not the reviews.

All these good reviews from big sites are a load of BS in my opinion. They were either paid off, threatened or got some goodies out of it like future interviews/exclusive previews for future Capcom games.

As for smaller sites...well they just follow the leaders anyway don't they

Most of the big sites that give it a good score all said roughly the same thing, they tried to sell you the game instead of actually reviewing it. Plus most of them are the ones who did defence articles a month before it came out.

@Root

Sales = quality? Really dude?

Root4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

@Lovable

Well in this case yeah because people have saw how crap it is, actually voted with their wallets (for once, very impressed with the gaming community on this one) and thus the game getting low sales.

The reviews didn't change anything, which I bet was a kick to the nutsack for Capcom and NT who were hoping it was going to

matgrowcott4085d ago

@Root

So you haven't played it?

aCasualGamer4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

I don't get the title... What do they mean by tired series? The Devil May Cry series wasn't tired or in the need of a reboot. Devil May Cry 4 was an absolute delight. Capcom should've continued with their formula. Gameplay wise, Devil May Cry 4 was one of the best in the series.

Don't get why people try to fix that which isn't broken in the first place.

I don't know how they can claim it's been revitalized. I mean doesn't that mean it brought the series back from the dead or brought life back to it? I mean whether you like the game or not that isn't true. The sales are terrible and Capcom is likely going to kill the franchise now.

Which is sad. One would hope that with the terrible sales of this one Capcom would say "well fans hated that new version why do you make a DMC5 proper" but with their track record they are more likely to just kill it off like they did Breath of Fire.

MikeMyers4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

@matgrowcott,

No he hasn't. The amount he has talked about this game he could have played it 3 times over. Oh well, I guess he still thinks he fighting some cause since Capcom must read his comments. Just like EA and Ubisoft.

Reboots happen all the time in the movie industry. No wonder the gaming community is often not taken seriously.

matgrowcott4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

@MikeMyers

What I think is funny is that I wasn't even being off-hand with him. He was ranting about how the sales prove the game is terrible and that reviews are all false and I wanted to know whether he'd played it or not.

Because seriously, it's difficult to call out reviewers without having played the game. You shouldn't even have a cast-in-stone opinion if you're not going to play.

And I got downvoted for asking if he played it! That's a special kind of insecure. "HE DOESN'T NEED TO PLAY THE GAME TO KNOW ITS QUALITY!!!!11!!!"

@Reibooi

The mistake you're making is in presuming that sales are low because they changed the game slightly. That's a big presumption, and it's the same one people made about RE6 because they felt it justified their hate.

Far Cry 3 and Hitman Absolution have been out, what?, a little over two months now and both have been available at a third of the original price. If you want to sell games today (Far Cry sold 4+ million) you need to drop the price almost immediately and that's not good for the industry or early adopters. There needs to be a new way of buying games, even if t's a price drop and more optional extras/donations/kickstarter-e sque system.

Capcom haven't been dropping their prices very well - we don't know enough to know why or even if they have the power to specifically control that in brick and mortar stores - but the pre-owned market HAS been. Resident Evil 6 was available sub-£20 in the UK about a fortnight after release. I haven't seen DmC in stores, but I imagine the price will drop again.

They're competing with the same game on the pre-owned market in an industry that is rapidly giving up on the $60/£40 price mark and they're refusing to change with the times. In my mind that makes a hell of a lot more sense than "because diehard fans hate it."

The only downside, of course, is that it doesn't give angry fans the "we were right!" feeling they so, so crave.

you mean

"how devil may crybabies can't handle change"

Blacktric4085d ago

I think he means;

"how DmC crybabies can't handle different opinions"

Deal with it or get out. No one needs to hear any more of this "lel u butthurt mad?" crap of you people.

Reverent4085d ago

Blacktric, I gave you a disagree by accident, sorry about that :/

Blacktric4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

As clarification; my comment is aimed at people who call original Devil May Cry fans as crybabies, whether they present their opinion in a calm and respectful manner or not. There is no point to keep calling everyone a crybaby just because they hate a game you like. You love the DmC? Have fun. But don't come and tell me that I can't handle change or that change is always good and I should get with the times. I played the game, I thought it was mediocre and it's as simple as that.

@Reverent

Don't worry about it.

Someone's looking to gain hits from the DmC vs DMC debate.

360ICE4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

Any other insightful comments, mr Obvious?

Website looking to get hits by writing controversial material.
Dude. Stop traffic. That's a new low for websites. I hope other webpages won't follow, but continue desperately trying to avoid hits by writing articles no one cares about.

Godmars2904085d ago

This defending a game which reviewed well yet sold poorly because of fan alienation is getting sad.

And now trying to compare it to Xcom while forgetting that the original FPS reboot caused a similar if not exact furor which then resulted in the current version, that those devs both listened and acted upon fan complaints, makes this article pathetic.

In fairness as much as emos make me cringe, he's not actually THAT emo if you play it and watch the cut scenes. No where near as cringe worthy as I thought it would be.

The gameplay is really fun and the combo system works well.

I'd say it's flaws compared the old ones are a lack of ability to explore (even if its an illusion of freedom) and the difficulty is too easy. (I'm about mission 8 or something for reference)

edit: I should point out I am a fan from the first game.

drTorsche4085d ago

I've been a fan from the first game as well, and I feel that it's a shame so many people aren't even giving the new game a chance. The old games weren't exactly flawless, and I've had plenty of fun with this one.

guitar_nerd_234085d ago

Totally, it was never supposed to be a game to take too seriously!
