No Looking Back: Why Console Generation 8 is in Danger - All Age Gaming

Tyler from AAG writes "Videogames have come a long way as an artform and a means of entertainment in these past short years. Major countries have started legally treating them as protected forms of expression similar to literature and film. Popular culture has begun to embrace the gaming community’s own plethora of jokes and inside language. And above all, in these very recent years the storytelling of gaming has evolved by leaps and bounds, breaking down the myths of the hobby being nothing but shallow entertainment. But, there is one appalling trend that has gone overlooked at best and encouraged at worst. Gaming’s past, or at least a vital part of it, is being destroyed."

It's seems with the constant evolution and experimentation of computer hardware components, better results are achieved if backwards compatibility is dropped. While it's not entirely ideal for many gamers and I can also imagine not a decision taken lightly by the manufacturers, cost and performance being a crucial balancing act, my old consoles aren't suddenly going to cease to exist because something new comes along.

Never understood the importance of BC myself.

I buy new consoles to play new games. When one buys a new car or a new television, do they feel the need to relive days of old by using the old? No. So why the need to play old games on your new system?

I think BC is exactly like x Game Chat. It is something which has become infinitely more important in the minds of some, simply because of its availability or lack thereof.

BC is something which is purely convenient, but far from necessary. 2¢

It adds value. Yes, in terms of practicality it may not be as useful as some other features, but, its far more than just convenient. Simply knowing its there adds value, not only to the system but older titles as well.

If my ps3 was backwards compatible, I would have bought some ps2 games since I didn't own that system. If you didn't own a system, it adds a lot of value to make the console two in one.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor351d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar351d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg351d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149351d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138351d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim351d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC351d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138351d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle351d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76351d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger351d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca351d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

potatoseal351d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright351d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
