Six Fantastic Video Game Opening Moments

"Nothing says “play me” like the opening moments of a game. They have to be gripping, punchy and enjoyable, providing a snapshot of what you can look forward to playing.

"Not every game manages to do this well though. Some start off far to slowly, relying heavily upon your own interest and drive to push on forward to the juicy meat that the game offers further in.

"Others reveal their goods prematurely, tempting you in with their alluring visuals and – what could be – interesting plot lines. Only to leave you bitterly disappointed just a few minutes later, just like a drunken kebab.

"When you do find that perfect balance though, it’s unforgettable and undeniably brilliant."

Idk about God Of War 3. Bioshock 1 is missing. and I think Half Life 1 should have made it not the 2nd one.

Tastynoodle4096d ago

The beginning of HL1 was a little too drawn out. HL2 managed to paint a stronger overall picture in a smaller timeframe than the first.

Just my thoughts :P

This isn't an ultimate list, its just six titles. There are tons that could have been there. Uncharted 2's opening is hella powerful way to start a game too. Personally HL2's opening is far superior to HL1's where you sit for ages on a train into Black Mesa doing little to nothing, then you go about your daily working day. It's smart, but it doesn't have as big an impact on you as the destroyed lives of all those affected by your actions.

I agree with shadydevil.
I loved the opening to Bioshock.
And I feel like the opening to the first half life was shocking and disturbing at the same time.
I actually like it when games take their time, allowing the player to be exposed to the world before the sh*t hits the fan. And the second that the lab test went wrong, my reaction is the same now as it was the first time I saw it, "Holy sh*t."
These are the nuances in pace that I enjoy, with a slower buildup that leads to absolute destruction and decay.
I suppose that I felt the same way playing through Chronicles of Riddick on the first xbox, walking towards the prison with the music playing and the dramatic movie title text slowly fading in and out.
It's all about the setup.

I loved seeing normal everyday life in Jurassic Park before the power went out, as I feel like I'm not being entirely thrust into chaos, but rather pulled every so slightly into an unavoidable situation.

The first half life did that to me.

Idk about your opinion, God of War 3 has the best opening of any game ever, amazing game. God of War: Ascension is the only game that can and will top it.

TheFirstClassic4096d ago (Edited 4096d ago )

Yeah I think GoW3 had the single most epic opening to any game ever, at least that I've played. There are others that are more emotionally powerful, but nothing that epic, I couldn't take my eyes off of it, it was insane.

Ascension may end up being a better game overall but I doubt it will be able to top that opening.

It would be nice if they can bring those games over.

I think the best opening goes to [insert Modern Shooter Game] where the building/plane exploded and I'm thrown into a firefight against terrorists with my fellow Marines.

Starfox8114096d ago

I found that far to slow to start for me. It wasn't until the Bollet mission that it took off. The Ifrit cave was fun, but once again the pace was a little dull - although it fitted the slow moving story well. =]

Qrphe4096d ago

Oh man, I remember not having a memory card when I first got this game and replaying it several times until the Dollet mission. Geez, the memories.

God of War games always have amazing openings. I've seen the 30 minute starting gameplay (I'm sorry but I couldn't resist watching) and it looks incredible. Fighting on a monster that has over 100 arms? What other game can you play that has that???

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

H91d 3h ago

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg10h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos9h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola5h ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me

Yuji Naka guilty of insider trading breaks silence to accuse Square Enix producer of lies

Yuji Naka was fined $1.2 million and given a suspended jail sentence for the crime.

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I find his comments around how Balan turned out to be very insightful as to why the game is trash. He basically apologises for its existence

solideagle13d ago

can you please give some of us who don't know anything about this, a summary of what happened?

Chocoburger13d ago

Balan was knowingly rushed out by S-E, it had an extremely short dev cycle and was fairly low budget.
Naka was the game's director until near the end when he was fired or perhaps he quit, I forgot.

carrotcakeag13d ago

@Chocoburger Yeah they did fire and replace him which caused him to unload a bunch of rants about the company. The project only existed because of Naka in the first place, he convinced Square to give him one shot at making a platformer. They gave him an opportunity but pulled the rug out before he was done for reasons not explained.
