Sly Cooper: Thieves in Times Review | EGM

EGM: "I love the Sly Cooper series, and I enjoyed playing through this first original entry in nearly eight years—but some of the classic Sucker Punch magic is definitely missing here. The capers themselves are still fun, but additional diversity in objectives would’ve been appreciated. Ultimately, Thieves in Time is still an above-average platformer, but it’s not nearly as good as it could’ve been."

First sly game I played. Really enjoyed it.

Do yourself a favor and get the HD collection! won't regret it :-)

I dont agree with the author, I think this game is a solid 8

Kingthrash3604088d ago

Kinda low score there, proof that reviews shouldnt decide if you buy or not. People have their own opinions and this includes reviewers. If unsure then rent and make your own choices.

Or free demo!.... lol thanks

ZombieNinjaPanda4088d ago

Technically the review score isn't low. It's technically 1.5 above average.

A2X_4088d ago

I see scores going from 6 to 9. Enough for me to get it. Especially with a launch price tag of 40$, can't go wrong.

Hingle_Mcringleberry4088d ago

What's with Sony and pushing out these average/below par exclusives lately? When was the last time they published a retail game for the ps3 that scored above 80 when all things were said and done?
Best games of last year were downloadables.

P_Bomb4088d ago

When? 2 weeks ago, with NiNoKuni, highest rated console game of the year so far with well over an 80 avg. How'd you miss it?

Good_Guy_Jamal4088d ago

SONY didn't publish Ni No Kuni though, Namco Bandai did. SONY had no input in that game. It's a 3rd party. Just putting that it of info out there.

Looking at your comment history, you wouldn't be interested either way. A guy who considers good games average.

Games that score less than 80 ("when all things are said and done") are only average games to those who pay attention to the numbers like they are an integral impression of what makes a game good. When I read a review, I look at the descriptions that make it up and weigh up whether the reasoning matches the score. Then I can see if a reviewer is paying attention to certain details and see how their journalistic integrity stands.

It's just like all the good reviews for Resident Evil 6 - i mean what the hell? When did gaming journalists put personal opinion and bias before factual analysis and description of why a game like RE6 is more broken than it is worth. And basing the quality of a game on a broken system, shows where you arguments falters. Why can anyone with a blog be accepted to Metacritic?

Sure, you can't keep up stellar performance every single year... however not that many of Sony-published games as of late have been 'poor' when you consider the elements that make up a 'poor' game. Some might have been disappointed for certain reasons, but Twisted Metal, Starhawk - both very fun and well made multiplayer games. PlayStation All Stars and LBP Karting - neither are poor unless you're looking to hate.

Plus, looking at Vita: Uncharted and Gravity Rush both received 80+ "when all things were said and done". So singling things down to "PS3" & "retail" to say Sony is under performing quality-wise is weak.

And Sly Cooper 4: it's not a poor or average game. For its genre it provides some great stealth action and platforming, and reviews like these are complaining that it's too familiar. I mean imagine that... a Sly game that plays like sly.

You're right that the best games of last year were downloadable and the best one was Journey - published by Sony.

@ P_Bomb, Ni no Kuni was published by Namco Bandai.

Dude, you just wrote an article in response to a troll comment. The guy probably won't even read it.

DigitalRaptor4088d ago (Edited 4088d ago )

It doesn't matter all that much to me if a person I respond to is actually trolling or not. What I know for a fact is that there are many idiots on this site who genuinely believe that things this guy trolls about, and that games that score less than 80 are average by default, and think Metacritic is a good representation of a game's quality. Those people pick up on bulls**t trolling and take it as the truth to spread on as lies.

Troll or not, I like to express myself and hope that my views are picked up on.

Is it law that every Sly game from Sly 2 onwards end on a massive cliffhanger? I wouldn’t be as anxious for a Sly 5 if they just gave Sly 4 a succinct ending.

On another note we still have yet to hear anything about how that Sly Cooper television series is coming along.

BlaqMagiq11576d ago

Duh. It's been almost 7 years. It NEEDS a new one.

Elda1576d ago

Why not If they know fans of the games want it bad enough.

“So all I can is that if you guys want more Sly Cooper let Sony know. We are always ready to dig into that and it was a great franchise to work on. It was a great project.“

Everyone flood Sony and let them know! I’d love to have a new Sly game on PS5.

Sciurus_vulgaris1582d ago

I would love for the cliffhanger ending to get a conclusion.

Rude-ro1582d ago

This!
This game got massacred with reviews for no reason what so ever other than it was sonys swan songs along with god of war ascension of which also got hit.

Sciurus_vulgaris1581d ago

I actually think Thieves in Time was better than Sly Cooper 3 and I’m surprised it reviewed worse than its predecessor.

BlackIceJoe1582d ago

I'd be done for a new game being a launch, or near launch game for the PS5.

Segata1582d ago

I really liked these games. Please bring him back.

Chaos_Order1582d ago

Incoming unpopular opinion!

I thought Thieves in Time was decent, but a bit of a letdown to be honest. Sly 3 ended perfectly, giving a conclusion of sorts for the main 3 characters while still leaving a little room for imagination, and had some of the best moments from the entire series, (The fight with General Tsao, anyone?) then Thieves in Time comes along with its lame villain, destroys Penelope's character, (I legitimately thought she was being brainwashed or something. Plus, why the boss fight in that crappy little mech suit when she's a master combatant and tech wiz?) and logic that makes no sense even in a cartoon world, such as Sly purposely being sent to prison so he can break out by... Throwing the one ton iron ball he's chained to to break through the wall? When he's never showed this type of strength before, and never displays a similar feat ever again? Plus I thought the levels were better designed in earlier games, and the cast of controllable characters in 3 was much more diverse and interesting. Sucker Punch were the true masters of this series.

A Look at All of the Stealth Games Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The stealth genre is one that some would argue doesn’t even exist – many titles include stealth elements, but actually fit into one of a number of other genres like action, platformer, or third-person shooter. Ever since the breakout success of the Metal Gear franchise (in particular Metal Gear Solid), though, the genre seems on much more stable footing and it demonstrated that you can have a veritable blockbuster on your hands relying only on stealth mechanics as the main gameplay element.

In recent years we’ve seen other things like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman and Splinter Cell continue to push the genre forward, although it still has somewhat limited appeal. Thankfully, the Vita has a healthy selection of stealth games available (and even more with backwards-compatibility), meaning if you’re looking to do some sneaking on the go then you’ll be well served with the console."
