Studio closures and the Death of Vigil Games

Studio closures have become far too common in the gaming industry, with a couple more falling victim in the last week.

Amongst all the news last week of THQ studios finding new homes and intellectual properties being sold to the highest bidder, came the depressing information that not all studios would be kept around. Vigil Games, developers of the Darksiders series, were passed over by potential buyers and closed doors shortly after the auction did.

Bigger money does not necessarily mean better games, Microsoft ... look at what you have done to the gaming industry. Your "Go Big or Go Broke" take on gaming has taken its toll on so many game developers' minds and pockets.

Your billions has disrupted the industry with devastating effect. Like an atom bomb to the flourishing industry the Japanese has nurtured since the 1980's. Nintendo was forced to side step back instead of progress and Sony to match your big budget even if it means losing billions just to keep up.

Its a good thing Apple and Android gaming platforms came out to reverse the damage you have caused by providing livelihood for small independent game makers.

Why don't you go back to Windows PC gaming platform? No? because you have done nothing for it? can't run it well? Steam? can't charge for online play & services?

?

o.O

I don't understand what your logic is.

Created jobs (they opened 4 or so new studios) and kept most of their developers in thei jobs?
This gen only one xbox 360 dev has been shut down by microsoft, Ensemble.
So tell me, what exactly have they done to the industry?

Making more games doesn't necessarily mean studios won't get shut down either as last year's studio closures have shown.
Your comment just shouts incoherent Microsoft hate.
First you claim that their big budget mentality has stunted small production growth completely ignoring XBLA which has been a major focus of theirs lately and XBLIG which is the only indie developer dedicated channel on consoles this gen. Then you cry about Nintendo having to scale back, ignoring the successes of the Wii and DS (Best performing consoles in nintendo history mind you).

@miyamoto... your logic is slightly flawed! Ms and sony are the problem! Sony would have been ok if they kept the same mind frame they used with ps1 and 2, but they got greedy as well!

You probablu dont remember but before the ps3 released (i think it was ken kutaragi) said he wanted people to have to work overtime and/or get a second job to get a ps3! Then both companies said the prices of games had to go up because of all the work going into them.

Truth is the games look better but require the same amount of dev time and arent much bigger in most cases.

Sonu helped the gaming industry thrive by having tons of games and cheap game prices. But with all companies afraid of losing money we dont see that anymore.

Like it or not... ms and sonu are killing gaming! It will only get worse if they go ahead with the blocking of used games, because people will buy fewer games for fear of being stuck with a sh!t game.

I think its time for a different console dev to step up and get things back to what they used to be! Because at this rate gaming will be funneled down to only the most popular franchises with very little new ip because everyone will be scared to take a risk!

The business of making games is just like any other business sector.

Grassroot developers will continue to be bullied out of business, swallowed up by bigger companies, or unable to compete with the bigger names in the business, Just like your local grocer being forced out of business by Wal-mart.

It's ruthless and cruel, but as the saying goes 'nothing personal, just business.'

The sad fact is that these people losing their jobs were in it for the love of it, and just like your local grocer with the friendly smile, they are being replaced by lifeless factions with profits in mind, which is why we're being bombarded with annual releases of endless sequels.

SolidStoner4096d ago

Totally agree!

And people can always support local grocer if they like it, same goes for small developer teams! In the end they still will end up in the bigger companies, it seems that cycle is endless!

An intro to Biomutant

Alex & Mike talk Biomutant, a game from Experiment 101/THQ Nordiq you likely have not heard of. While the AAA side of the industry tends to homogenization and imitative, cinematic presentation, “AA” games remain creative and innovative in 2021. Drawing on inspirations as varied as Dark Souls, third person shooters & kung fu cinema, Biomutant is Ratchet & Clank on acid, developed by a team of 20 people.

Vote for either Darksiders or Darksiders II at the bottom of the article! 🎮😄

Gaming4Life19811643d ago

Darksiders 1 is the better game but I like part 2 as well.

Daver1643d ago

Darksiders was a lot better than darksiders 2. Even darksiders 3 was better than 2

AK911642d ago

Darksiders 1 is a complete game but it’s obvious with Darksiders 2 they ran out of budget after the Ice world and the game just becomes a poorly paced mess.

THQ's Golden Wii, Meant for the Queen of England, has been Found

Remember THQ? They published such games as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Darksiders I & II, the Destroy All Humans series, Homefront, the Red Faction series, and Saint's Row 1-3. Almost as famous as their games were the THQ marketing stunts, including a Golden Wii.
