DmC week one sales good enough?

Sales estimates are in for Japan and the USA, but does the first week sales total spell doom for the series or are encouraging thus far?

core fans are keeping away it seems, good reviews are offset by bad word of mouth, not all hype is good hype.

AsimLeonheart4100d ago

It was a bad idea to alienate core fans. CAPCOM is now suffering the consequences. They rebooted the franchise for wider appeal and increased sales (5 million sales initial target) but it is selling less. What good is a reboot if it is going to sell less than its predecessor? DMC thrives on hardcore fans, not casuals. CRAPCOM went after the wrong crowd and are now realizing their mistake the hard way.

Red_Orange_Juice4100d ago

I'm not a core DMC fan, but Im put off by the changes, I'll wait when game will be availaible for half the price

Reibooi4100d ago

I'm now wondering what Capcom is gonna do. Will they understand the reason this is selling poorly and go back to the original Devil May Cry and make Devil May Cry 5? Or will they take this as no one wanting the franchise anymore and let it die(like they did with Breath of Fire)

Given the track record they have shown I expect it to be the latter of the two. I'm kinda confused as to why they made this in the first place. Didn't DMC4 sell like 4-5 million? Aren't you supposed to reboot games that are not doing well instead of those that are? Yeah DMC4 had it's naysayers but it wasen't close to the level DmC has seen. Either way it will be interesting to see how Capcom spin this and what they ultimately do.

jimbobwahey4100d ago

Capcom are slowly dying. They've alienated fans of Resident Evil, they're alienated fans of Devil May Cry, their on-disc DLC has damaged their reputation and even their fighting games are going down the toilet (see the absolutely terrible reception for Street Fighter X Tekken).

It's almost like they're deliberately setting out to destroy their own fanbase and slowly but surely it's working. The company is killing itself thanks to stupid decision after stupid decision. It's the same thing that's happening to Square as well, they're slowly going down the toilet.

Tdmd4100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

I only wish Resident Evil core fans have had the same mentality towards RE6. Gamers need to realize that they are in charge, and being vocal doesn't matter if they keep supporting what they are unhappy with.

Although, I believe that low sales (in comparison to previous games and/or other capcom franchises) in this case is not only because it is a reboot that no one really wanted, but also because of the arrogance and disrespect Ninja Theory showed to core fans during the whole development process. The in game cutscene being the icing on the cake. It would not be undeserved if they failed miserably: it would be justice.

Important thing now is how the coming big releases will eat into DmC sales.

Between now and the next 2 months we will get or have:

Ps3 only:

1) GoW:A
2) Sly Cooper: TiT
3) Ni No Kuni

360 only:

1) GeoW:J

Multiplat:

1) crysis 3
2) MGR:R
3) Castlevania LoS2
4) Aliens: CM
5) Metro Lastnight
6) Bioshock Infinit
7) Dead Space 3
8) Tomb Raider
9) Army of Two: DC

From the above list of games, 7 games are probably seen as big AAA releases.

Considering places are already selling DmC locally where I live pre owned for £30, and the number only increasing, wonder how this will affect sales.

"I'm now wondering what Capcom is gonna do. Will they understand the reason this is selling poorly and go back to the original Devil May Cry and make Devil May Cry 5? Or will they take this as no one wanting the franchise anymore and let it die(like they did with Breath of Fire) "

I'm guessing and hoping for the latter as well. If "core" fans can't let the real fans enjoy DMC then expect capcom to just scrap the entire franchise. Nobody wins. "core" should be proud as they've killed the chance for a new gen to enjoy DMC all the while claiming to be real fans. Do they really think Capcom is going to go back? it should be OBVIOUS that the old style is dead to them and is NOT coming back, EVER.

but this whole ordeal has been quite entertaining for many

ThanatosDMC4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

Yup agreed, it's a lose lose situation for the hardcore crowd but that's Capcom for you. Megaman X series died with the reboot the watered down, easy mode Megaman Zero series and then became Megaman ZX then it just flatlined with whatever version was next.

I'm surprised they havent killed Monster Hunter series yet. We might see it on the 4th iteration.

Not a bad start but I expected more. I think it might just make 1 million in four weeks.

RyuX194100d ago

If it does (which I doubt) sales aren't going to make it any further because as you know our boy Raiden is gonna Rise.

karlowma4100d ago

I haven't looked at any numbers from the previous DMC titles, but this seems to have always been a bit of a darkhorse series, popular with Capcom fans and little else. Based on that understanding, I'd say 0.5 mil in a week is pretty good, especially for a January release.

Thatguy-3104100d ago

Does this also include digital sales?

AsimLeonheart4100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

In comparison DMC4 sold more than 750,000 in its debut week with 3 LESS days of sale. DmC sold half of DMC4 in Japan, one-third in UK and two-third in USA. All these lower sales with 100 million more consoles in the market since 2008 (bigger installed base), with 3 more days of sale, with no competition in January and a "wider appeal". You can get the idea how much poorly it performed if we take in to account all the major factors.

EDIT: Disagreers, MAN UP and accept the reality! I only stated absolute facts.

Pozzle4100d ago

I'd say a series that has sold over 10 million copies is more than just a "dark horse" tbh. It might not be as popular as some of Capcom's other franchises, but those sales are still pretty impressive.

karlowma4100d ago

Yeah I guess you're right. I don't know why, but DMC has just always flown under the radar of myself and my friends. Too busy playing roleplaying games, I suppose.

kesvalk4100d ago

the system is shit, the camera is shit, the platforming is shit and the character is shit.

how they thought this would sell?

they were able to sell SF4 3~4 times for the same ppl because SF4 IS VERY GOOD!

a shit game will not sell, period.

Cirran4100d ago

CoD seems to? (sorry had to be said)

Anyway, I just played through the first mission I really enjoyed it and I normally dislike these types of games.

kesvalk4100d ago

for the fans of COD, cod is a good game.
for the fans of DMC, DmC is a horrible game.

that's the big difference.
not saying COD is good, but at least it can please a certain public... DmC didn't please no one except reviewers that wanted to be in good relationship with capcom.

Cirran4100d ago

Or maybe they just liked it? Like I do? People have way to high expectations of games these days. I miss the days of the PS2 when we could enjoy games for what they were no matter how shit/buggy they are. ;<

Lord_Sloth4100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

CoD sells to hardcore FPS enthusiasts and casuals alike. It also has the frat crowd. It has a consistent and LARGE fanbase because of this and it doesn't change anything. This is why it sells. It pleases it's core market.

DmC's only hope was the core action gamer market which they quickly alienated by trying to appeal to the casual market.

I love enjoying games and remain loyal to many franchises but I will not pay for a game that I simply do not enjoy. DmC falls into this category. When developers start selling out the very people that keep them afloat to try and get the attention of people who never even glance their way what do they expect to happen?

parkerpeters4100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

@Cirran, in the days of the PS2, you oh so fondly remember with their day one patches, and online fixes for bugs were great!

All sarcasm aside, the PS2 had a few things going for it that you don't take into account.

1- If a game was buggy, it flopped because there were no patches. No fixes. It was buggy, so it failed. You shipped a game with all possible bugs fixed, and hoped for the best.

2- Gaming was still a niche market, and there weren't "brilliant" men like Tameem at the helm, because people like Tameem don't care about games. They care about the bottom line. Making games was not a real viable career option, so we still had people who were passionate about gaming, rather than having a feigned interest in games, and a passion for money.

DmC is a game about the bottom line, about money. It is nothing more. It was not made by a team that cares about you, just your wallet. It was made to cash in on a classic series, and sell casuals their first DMC experience, but it is watered down, and it shows. In the long run, DMC does not matter to Capcom, only how much money it makes. If they thought they could make more money with it being a top down ARPG, they would have done that before Konami did it. They do not care about you, the integrity of the series, or the niche fans of the original series. They care about your wallet.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC1h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer2h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best
