OUYA works with Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers, great 1080p mkv media streamer too

Pocket-lint: It has been reported by others before, even confirmed by the team behind OUYA themselves, that the forthcoming Android games console is capable of working with USB controllers from rival machines. Now Pocket-lint has learnt exclusively, from its good friends at games development company Puzzl, that many of the wireless controllers already on the market also work too. And that includes the Xbox 360 controller.

This is just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Yi-Long4099d ago

... pretty sure MS and Sony would love to see as many controllers being sold as possible.

Anyway, great news keeps coming from the OUYA front.

nveenio4099d ago

Yeah, this is no big deal. PS3 and 360 controllers work with PC, too. In fact, I use a 360 controller to play most of my PC games, and I don't even own a 360.

dakunclear4098d ago

I agree with you and there would be no lawsuits considering my ps3 controller works fine on my Asus Transformer android tablet and my 360 controller works fine on my galaxy s3

nveenio4098d ago

Name calling hurts my feelings, but it also encourages me to think more rationally and make better decisions about related topics. /s

I mentioned PS3's controller, too, you know.

For writing software to work with hardware you own? In what world? That's complete BS. I buy something, I can hack it, interface with my own hardware, or use it as a doorstop if I like. You can't do anything about it. If you tried to sue, you'd be rightfully bankrupted.

I'd love if they put up some more documentation on how the USB 360's controller protocol is, as information when I searched last year was SCARCE. There was the packet information but no documentation on how the modified USB protocol worked....oh well. ETA: Found a linux driver with a source, seems it's been cracked open. Nice.

cee7734099d ago

considering ps3 controllers is compatible with android and has been for quite a while it seems like a no brainer

George Sears4098d ago

@LKHGFDSA

So what's your point? Do they own the DualShock 3? Because I can use it on Steam and emulators with no problem.

DivineHand1254098d ago

if lawsuits were to happen, they would have to sue google or the ones who made the drivers for those controllers because those 2 controllers work with nearly every android device.

Snookies124099d ago

Man... Wasn't interested in this at all, but this is intriguing for both the controller and the MKV playback reasons. I hope their MKV will support soft subs.

b_one4099d ago

you should try www.dx.com they sell plenty of models on android boxes that are capable of this and more, cheaper.

Clover9044099d ago

Thanks for the link. I'll probably wait and see if the next generation of consoles support mkv before buying a dedicated media streaming device.

blackblades4099d ago

MKV got my attention, no more hassle on converting to make it the work on ps3.

Sucitta4099d ago

ps3 media player has been converting my mkv's on the fly, seamlessly for years now.

it's free and works on 30gb mkv/dts

Snookies124099d ago

That's exactly what I'm interested in. MKV playback is very nice for me personally.

blackblades4099d ago

@Sucitta
Nothing working for me at the moment converting take way to long, my fastest ways that doesn't involve converting doesn't work anymore.

Dark_Overlord4099d ago

I'm interested too. I find the PS3's lack of container and codec support disappointing, and that CINAVIA shit means I can't back up my movies to mkv's >:(

anyone who believes that a Tegra 3 is gonna run at 1080p for anything but maybe video playback and nes emulation is living a pipedream. 99% of the stuff on the ps3/360 runs at 720p. And those are considerably more powerful platforms. Second, when people are asking why they'd want this, what they are saying is "what does ouya do that my current hardware doesn't do?". The answer is "nothing."

Emulation: You can emulate on just about everything. Hell, my old psp emulates everything up to the n64. Want to emulate on the big screen? Get an original Xbox and soft mod it, and you're into everything including psone and n64.

Video: you can get an original Xbox and xbmc and watch everything. If you want Netflix and Hulu plus, they have apps for every platform on the planet. Ouya does nothing new.Indie games: xbla, psn, and wiiware brought indie gaming to a mass market years ago. And the pc has had indie gaming since its inception.

Open platform: pc anyone? You can run "unsigned code" and tweak hardware to your heart's content. You can even tweak things like clock speeds and voltages. The i5 and i7 k series CPUs are completely unlocked and ramp way up from their factory defaults.

Playing tablet/ cell phone games on the tv: begging the question of "why," you can do it now. My tablet has hdmi out. Dunno about the other tablets out there, but I didn't get a cheap out on my tablet--you get what you pay for.

Playing AAA games: if you think ouya is going to get platform exclusives then you're high. Devs will go where the install base is.

The ouya provides nothing new or useful and will bomb. Sorry ouya fans (I can't believe I just said that).

Kennytaur4099d ago

Somebody can't afford an OUYA, it seems.

aquamala4099d ago

you seem to miss the part that this is a $99 product and now we find out you can just use your existing controllers. so what current gen consoles are more powerful when they cost 2-3 times as much? and it actually has 1GB of RAM, double of current consoles.

and using tablet hdmi out on TV is just not the same thing, can you use Xbox 360/PS3 controller to play games on it? and how much does that tablet costs you?

and when cloud gaming takes over... this is pretty much all you need. don't need a powerful machine when all the processing are done on the cloud.

Qrphe4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

I agree with your take on its power. Go visit reddit and youtube where people talk about this device and expect it to be able to run games like Assassin's Creed, Day Z, Planetside 2, Mass Effect, ect.
You'll get a good bittersweet laugh.

Liquid_Ocelot4099d ago

You can even run OnLive on this little thing.

SilentNegotiator4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

"anyone who believes that a Tegra 3 is gonna run at 1080p for anything but maybe video playback"

Duh. That's what it SAID. "great 1080p ***MKV MEDIA STREAMER***"

The real appeal is it being the ultimate non-phone/tablet android device. No one expects it to be the next Xbox at $99.

Qrphe4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

"No one expects it to be the next Xbox at $99."

I don't think you understand the delusion of these Ouya fanboys

WIN! OUYA will also support Oculust Rift for does who are budget players have no fear OUYA is here. It will have tons of new games made by indie devs you will have a blast with this little power house machine.

Lou Ferrigno4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

OUYA has some VERY intense competition with Nvidia's Project Shield on the Horizon .. And if i'm correct OUYA has a Tegra 3 (+?) chip insited whilest Nvida's PS has their newly announed T4 chip.. sooo OUYA is already outdated..The price is their only selling point imo :)-

mttrackmaster384099d ago

If Nvidia can get Project Shield out for less than $250, it will be a must-have.

Lou Ferrigno4099d ago

agreed man, both will be determined by their price points .. i think the sub 300 for Project shield would be ideal if they wanna make any dent in the Mobile gaming atmosphere ..OUYA has even more on its shoulders since PS was announced so im excited to see what the team behind OUYA does about it =)

TBONEJF4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

Why are they even talking bout OUYA when they haven't even release their boring console available? I'd prefer NVIDIA PROJECT SHIELD

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia1571d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

william_cade1570d ago (Edited 1570d ago )

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Xaywhat1602d ago

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE1602d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
