never got why people hunt for trophies.
because that's not what i want from gaming.
it's not why i'm into gaming
pointless trophies without any benefits other than bragging rights
but instead of being cool you're just being lame for spending million years on something so pointless...
although i will give props for completing hardcore difficulties
that are actually challenging.

No one is forcing you to get them. Somewhat related to your N4G name though.. It's a bit contradicting what you had even said..

You are willing to give praise to people who beat things on hard difficulties which is the same thing just done differently. Hell I am sure some games even give trophies for beating certain difficulties.

When a NBA team wins a championship do they just say "fuck the trophy and the championship ring it's worthless." of course not.. It's their proof.

Technically yes those items mean nothing but people are competitive at nature and they like to win or have something that says they are the winners.. Just like you could tell someone "Oh I beat that game on the hardest mode last night" and they don't believe you.. Well there are trophies for that so now they have to.. See the point? Same competitive crap just done differently.

Just like you might not be into trophies, there are people who are so why is it since no one if forcing you to hunt for trophies why is it so wrong someone else might want to? If I am a company I want to appeal to my entire audience not just certain people in it.

Certain people like proof of what they have done in their gaming journeys. I don't care, you don't care but some people do, difference is I could give a crap what your reason for playing a game is to that extent.

People hunt for them as something to do, which is nothing new. This is no different than MGS 4 having emblems (which later became trophies I guess) or a game having collectibles for art or items. People do them to prove they can, show their skill, get the most value out of the game or OCD.
Thats cool, but why do things have to conform to your desires? Trophies / Achievements don't take away from the actual game, so their existence isn't hurting you.
Then ignore them / these topics.
This is a VERY common misconception. Many trophies relate to things that people might not otherwise do, like Catherine has a secret ending for doing Axis Mundi. Not many people would do it without trophies (since very few have with trophies...), so it's an added bonus you get with the additional ending. Several other trophies relate to emblems, unlockables, skills, concept art and in some cases Home (platinum for WKC = the White Knight armor) or XMB themes (FF XIII).
Couldn't that be said about gaming in general? Plenty of people in the past did perfect runs of say Megaman or Contra, so this is also nothing unique to this generation either.

I like getting trophies but I don't worry about them until I get through the game. It's more about playing it longer. Most games I don't even get half pf the trophies. Lego games are fun and not too hard to get a platinum on. I'll never get all of the trophies on GT5 though.

Kratoscar20084112d ago

I agree with you, nothing wrong about them but people making things they dont like to get a Trophy? Remember the 1000 people online trophy in some NBA games? Thats ridiculous.

violents4112d ago

I agree, I dont understand how the game is fun anymore when your grinding through walkthroughs and stategy guides, cussing at your tv because your all OCD about last collectable or something. Thats why I'm not a trophy whore. Honestly,

There's no one to brag to about it anyway.

admiralvic4112d ago

Thats because you're taking a gross assumption and looking at the worst possible examples. A lot of games don't require every collectible and others have them in fairly obvious locations. A more common problem is SEEING the collectible, but not having a clue how to get it, over needing a guide to actually unlock it.

Again, this is another misconception. A lot of people think that there is someone bragging about every trophy, but it really boils down to what said user finds "impressive". Sure most people don't brag about trophies, but would you really want to be friend or talk to someone that bragged about their accomplished with or without trophies? Honestly I wouldn't, but I would much rather game with someone that has SHOWN to have some skills, than some no namer with nothing under their belt.

violents4110d ago (Edited 4110d ago )

@admiralvic

How am i making a gross asumption, thats one of the examples listed in the article about why its tough to be a trophy whore?

Oh and btw I understand not every game has "collectables" I have turned on my game console before, but thanks for clearing up that obvious point for me.

The guy literally says how he follows through guides looking for that 100% collected, and admits to throwing a fit when he gets what he thinks is the last one and is only at 99.9%. Now if this guy is like this and I know some people on my friends list are as well, there must be quite a few people like this. And I dont get how that's fun to anyone.

Just because you in peticular are not does not suggest that my statement is false or too generalizing.

Honestly I can prob count on one hand how many times I have looked at my trophy list compared to someone elses.

Soldierone4112d ago

If you need a "purpose" for everything, then why are you playing video games to begin with? There is no point in it at all, you could very well be doing something else.

The answer is probably enjoyment. And for some people earning trophies is a challenge they enjoy doing....

Personally I get trophies because it gives me something to do. I just spent 60 dollars on a game, might as well spend an extra hour getting a trophy instead of tossing it aside.

jambola4112d ago

The same could be said about video games all togethor

I love trophies. I don't play a game over and over again to get them. But Ill try to get as many as I can in one play through. I feel like I'm being rewarded and accomplishing a little extra for something I wouldn't normally do. Some trophies are really unique. I like the trophies that make you go to a certain part of the that you normally wouldn't have, or wouldn't have found out. Like the highest point in Infamous 2. Trophies don' tmake or break a game for me. But I do enjoy getting them and looking at them once in awhile. I only have 3 plats. I would never play a game hours and hours on end just to get a specific trophy.

Trophies have done a lot of good for video games. In fact, when Uncharted, GTAIV, MGS4, ANd the force unleashed annnounced trophy patches, since they didn't originally come with trophies, sales for those games increased.

I hope they get more creative with a reward system for the next generation.

But trophies, aren't going away. In fact, other gametypes have added trophy system as well. Like World of Warcraft or IOS Gamecenter.

Hellsvacancy4113d ago (Edited 4113d ago )

I only platinum games I really like, ive really liked 24 games so far, I dont count the platinum for Terminator Salvation

Ive got friends that have got 100s of platinums, I tell them there insane when we talk about it online "how the hell you platinum Res 5 Greyfox? that game was damn awful, I couldnt invest another minute in that game"

Games like Demon's Souls or Skyrim, I want to get as much out of the game as I can, trophies help

ZBlacktt4113d ago

Most use custom firmware and don't have to worry about playing the games at all. Google it.

Dark_Overlord4112d ago

Yep, but they're easy to spot

e.g MGS plat in 10 mins, WKC in 10 secs etc

Personally I love collecting trophies for myself (Over 60 plats now), but I'm not arsed about bragging or showing them off, they're there for my own personal satisfaction :)

Rageanitus4113d ago

I just wish there is an option of removing the trophies or records on your gaming profile... I am NOT a trophy whore but it kindov sucks that there are many games I hated and never looked back to play them again yet there are trophies on record..

This also applies to the numberous demos I've downloaded. I wish there is a way to remove this from your purchase history.

aquamala4113d ago

I just don't want to see trophy/achievement notifications, it's just silly to me. But neither 360 or ps3 let you turn off only trophy notifications, you would have to turn off all notifications, which includes friend invites and messages, I don't want to turn that off

yoshiroaka4113d ago

Yea man i feel you on that one.
So many 1%-2% on my list *sigh*
Had some friends over once and they brought Fifa to play and only later i relaised that they played it on my profile and i was like nooooo!!! :(( That 1% is there for life now.

I agree on the purchase list too. At least lets gets some way to sort that shit.

violents4112d ago

same here, I have a ton of games where the trophy count is 1 or 2 %. I didnt like the game and wish I could remove them as well.

Summons754113d ago

Because you have to fight the realization that trophies are completely pointless and do nothing but dictate how to play a game.
