1UP - Skylanders' new competition brings together Disney's many universes.
The toys-to-life genre has died out, but the concept of Disney Infinity should live on in another genre since it provides a wild crossover for fans.
There is a huge gap in the market at the moment. There aren’t many (if any) toys-to-life games available for the two consoles yet. A reboot or remake of the game would work so well, especially with Disney’s current roster of characters, films and TV shows.
Did Disney sell the rights to Activision? I never knew they had the rights to Disney Infinity.
They DO have the rights to Skylanders though.
Plus there's a financial reason every publisher gave up on the "toys to life" thing. So I doubt they'll revive any of them.
Is it possible Disney Infinity or other toys to games could return, but I'll be honest I really hope they don't come back.
These kinds of games are just another way for the game studios to nickle and dime you for every cent you have.
Disney Infinity was a fun game I could play with my kid back in the day. I still have it and the 100+ toys and yes, it works on PS5. But my kid is a teenager now and we've both moved on to more serious games.
Take a look at the rise and fall of Toys-To-Life games and see the magic it brought into everyone's home with games like Skylanders.
The Dinesy/Activision money machine is spooling up. There's no doubting it will be profitable, but the "fun factor" seems like a very low multiple to me.
I fail to see why there isn't more interest in this product. Either I'm one of the few here comfortable to admit I like Disney games or, similarly, I'm one of the few here with kids who like Disney games.
Are there no parents out there looking at this as a great go-to for bringing the kiddos together and enjoying their favorite characters, worlds and more?
Am I the only parent here who is looking at the Toy Box mode with the same wonder and delight we have with LittleBigPlanet?
Am I the only one here who played Toy Story 3 and absolutely loved what Avalanche did there, eager to see how much further they've come with this?
It saddens me that we're not seeing such an engaging group of gamers, solo or parents, excited for this product.
It looks potentially like a ton of fun, but I am wondering who their audience is. Skylanders is clearly geared towards younger kids who you'd think would be the target market for any toy-based game. But let's list the things that Infinity includes that younger kids have trouble with:
-Free 3d camera
-Jumping puzzles
-Open-world gameplay (kids get lost without easily-findable objectives)
-Minecraft/LBP world-building
-Online connectivity (file sharing/multiplayer)
-Potential downloadable expansions that require actual DLC/Data management
I don't know about you guys, but every time my 7-year-old wanted to play any game that had ANY of the above features, he'd get frustrated and I wound up having to grab the controller and do it for him.
Maybe Infinity is trying to expand the toy market to teenagers, but I think that's a risk.
