Is Nintendo Playing Possum or Have they Run Out of Steam?

GotGame: The Wii U’s launch has been a strange one to say the least. After Nintendo announced their new console at E3, we assumed it would be the start of a media blitz to explain and hype the new machine. After E3, Nintendo went quiet, and we waited patiently for Nintendo to kick off the advertising campaign that would sell the public on their new machine. And then we waited patiently some more, and some more...

Akuma-4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

nintendo is doing what nintendo always does. theyll rely on fanatics to sell the wii u. the wii u has little games on the horizon for it and the system should cost less than half the asking price. nintendo is known for starving their fanbase of games compared to the likes of sony who constantly releases new games.

i would also like to apologize for my absence lately but i was doing a lot of running around due to the holiday season and such. even though i use my vita and mobile phone to send messages i couldnt get around to voice my opinion on certain matters on n4g. anyway, have a nice day all

EddieNX 4115d ago

You're the worst Akuma. You bring shame to the awesome real Akuma who is by far the best character in Street fighter.

I will be enjoying Lego city , Rayman Legends , Pikmin 3 , Wonderfull 101 , Aliens colonial Marines , Game and Wario all on my awesome wiiu and I will also be enjoying GTAV , Bioshock infinite , MGR , etc on my ps3 and 360.

You lose.

ozzywazzy4115d ago

That's just about the saddest list of wii u games I've seen bundled together. You use that to make a point?! C'mon man try harder. Surely there has to be something a little more stellar than Lego city and pikmin.

stragomccloud4115d ago

OzzyWazzy
You've obviously never given Pikmin some time, Pikmin is amazingly fun and addictive. In my book, Pikmin /is/ worth it.

deafdani4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

@Ozzywazzy:

- Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2 are incredibly appraised games, both by game reviewers and normal gamers like you and me. What makes you think Pikmin 3 won't be just as great?

- Lego games are always consistently fun, and Lego City Undercover is the first completely original Lego game, not based on any license, and it's open world. Think Grand Theft Auto with building blocks. Yeah, it's a pretty promising game.

- Rayman Legends is the sequel to Rayman Origins, one of the best platforming games of this console generation, with amazing graphics and superb level design and platforming... and Legends seem to be even better than that.

- Wonderful 101 is the new game from Platinum Games, the dudes behind Bayonetta, MadWorld, Vanquish, and the upcoming Metal Gear Rising. They have serious pedigree, the guys in the team made games like Devil May Cry, and Viewtiful Joe... so, yeah, Wonderful 101 is certainly a game to look out for.

- Aliens Colonial Marines: Gearbox game. They make fun shooters, and this isn't just a Wii U exclusive.

- Game and Wario: ok, I'll give you that one. Yeah, usually Wario's minigame compilations are fun, but personally I wouldn't pay full price for those games, I find very little lasting appeal to them.

So... 5 out of 6 games are worth looking out for on this list. So, yeah, Kingofwiiu is actually making a pretty strong point with almost all of these games listed. And he forgot to mention Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate.

If you can't see why any of these titles are appealing, then you're just plain ignorant, or have extremely limited gaming tastes... or both.

Kos-Mos4115d ago

Nobody noticed your absence, but I can notice that you`re full of immature comments.

exfatal4115d ago

took the words right outta my mouth. Well said well said..

Spookshow4115d ago

@ ozzywazzy: what, does Pikmin doesn't have enough shooting for you? typical FPS fanboy reaction...

BlackWolf4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Absence? Dear Akuma, I doubt someone missed your fanboy talking. You're just one more of the bunch of haters. Stop being so biased, please. And i agree with King, you don not deserve that name.

Theyellowflash304115d ago

Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Lego City, Aliens, Monster Hunter..... little games on the horizon?

tehpees34115d ago

Dude seriously Sony do not constantly release new games. Only fanboyism would say that. They have pumped sequels and "HD" remakes to high heaven on a scale the others haven't.

stragomccloud4115d ago

Very true, though there is nothing wrong with that. It's just sad how Sony fanboys jump on Nintendo for doing that. Though it's even worse when xbox fanboys do the same thing despite the system having a paid online service and only surviving because of multi plat titles that I can run on my PC with higher quality effects and yet still pay less for.

I long for the days when gamers go back to the ways of yore. Namely... sitting down, shutting up, and playing some freaking games!

deafdani4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

I guess I'll get a lot of disagrees for writing this, but here goes.

Yes, Sony have made a lot of sequels, and yes, a lot of HD remakes... but that doesn't change the fact that they also have introduced SEVERAL new AAA IPs on this console generation exclusive to the PS3, something that neither Nintendo or Microsoft can truly claim.

As a matter of fact, there's two new PS3 exclusive IPs coming out this year (I think): Beyond, and The Last of Us.

Soooo, yeah. Sony actually releases a lot of new games most of the time.

I'm not saying this out of fanboyism. As a matter of fact, Nintendo is actually my favorite company, Wii was my favorite console of this gen (though I own and play Xbox 360 and PS3 as well), and Wii U will probably be my favorite console of next gen (day one buyer here), because I love Nintendo franchises THAT much. And yet I can see that, when it comes to quality and quantity of high profile games, Sony had the edge on this console generation by a LONG shot.

SuperShyGuy4115d ago

I thought it would take you having broken hands to not be the first person on every Nintendo article, calling everyone a "fanatic" while being fanatical about Sony.

gpturbo814115d ago

unoriginal, played out sequels of the same few franchises. wow, thrilling

IAmTheBest354115d ago

wii u has a lot more than black ops 2. come on dude thats not the only game that exists.

IAmTheBest354115d ago

i guess fanatics can get you to 100 million units sold

madjedi4114d ago

Nope thats the casuals, thx for playing though.

Good to see you back around Akuma.

chadboban4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Like pretty much every single console launch ever, there is gonna be that dry spell period for a couple of months post launch. My friend that bought a PS3 at launch said all he pretty much had to play for a while was Resistance then pretty much nothing for months, swore he'd never buy another console at launch. All consoles take a while before they pick themselves up, I mean look at how far the PS3 has come. I'll most likely pick up a Wii U a little later this year although Rayman Legends may just make me pick it up sooner(I freaking loved Rayman Origins).

I say the Wii U and the Vita have a lot to prove this year and I believe Nintendo and Sony will do right by their systems.

BlackWolf4115d ago

Agree. This is the moment for both the Vita and the Wii U to show what they are made of, and shut the haters' mouths once and for all (I'd like to think that, but there'll always be haters...) :D

JustinWeinblatt4115d ago

You're definitely right on that one. All launch periods have a dry period after launch, and we ALWAYS act like it's some sort of surprise. The same thing is going to happen with the X-Bo 720 and PS4, and again we're going to be taken aback. We have a habit of getting overhyped and then being disappointed by reality.

The Wii U is different for a couple of reasons though. First off, the launch lineup was fairly weak. The Wii U is an interesting concept that could turn out to be amazing, but Nintendo has to prove it's amazing. Wii Sports clearly and effectively demonstrated the capabilities of the Wii U. Nintendoland did not.

Moreover, we have no inkling of whats coming down the pipeline for the Wii U. By the time the Wii came out, we knew that Metroid Prime corruption was coming out. We'd seen a trailer for Smash Bros Brawl. We'd already seen some HUGE and awesome looking titles. We knew why we should be hyped for the Wii, even if the games weren't there quite yet.

For the Wii U, we know next to nothing about its post launch window plans. We don't even know the release dates for all of the launch window games. Nintendo's hardest hardcore fans will have faith that Nintendo will eventually deliver great software as they almost always do, but Nintendo needs to show more than Bayonetta 2 to show that the Wii U will have a long successful life with a great software lineup.

I'm sure Nintendo has more in development for the Wii U. Naturally, they intend to support the console for more than 6 months. I'm just trying to make sense of why Nintendo is being so incredibly secretive about what's coming up.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

stragomccloud4115d ago

Man it was a little gloomy for a while on the PS3 front. But look at it now! For one thing, multiplat titles are mostly amazing(bethesda and call of duty devs need to shape up), and the exclusives have made the PS3 a must have for anyone. I can't wait until "The Last of Us" and "Beyond Two Souls!"

ZeekQuattro4115d ago

Rayman Legends is amazing. I recenlty played the demo and the three stages provided convinced me its a must have. Its the first Rayman game I evered played but I can see why the series has such a big following.

I'm hoping Nintendo at least teases something at GDC this year.

doogiebear4115d ago

The "U" is for "Underwhelming".

exfatal4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Oh? I always thought i stood for "Underestimated"

doogiebear4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Perhaps "Underachiever", when REAL next gen starts.

Next gen doesnt start with Nintendo just because it's new. It's actually 6 years too late, without the same casual appeal that sold the old wii. By that reasoning, then Ouya is next gen too (Lol).

Ooh! By my above deductions, "Underdeveloped" is a good title for the "U" too!

DivineAssault 4115d ago

Its really for "Unfulfilling".. I have one btw.. Kidtendo land that came w it & NSMB which i bought sadly.. I must say that i havent turned it on in weeks & only played it for a couple hours before i felt ripped off again.. I guess it will stay off until rayman & bayo 2 come around.. Everything else that i tried was nothing special..

IAmTheBest354115d ago

donbear

its next gen because its new. plain and simple. what exactly makes it part of the seventh gen? i dont understand this mentality.

ElectricKaibutsu4114d ago

The U is for Unterseeboot. It's German for submarine. Nintendo... does not have a firm grasp of German.

If you don't have one. Wii U has been nothing but awesome for the people who have one. Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge is sooo fun. Looking forward to Monster Hunter and The Wonderful 101 this year. Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3 and Aliens Colonial Marines.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

Z5013d ago

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga3d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos3d ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas3d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj3d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger3d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
