1UP - The Skylanders-Inspired Disney Infinity Takes Licensed Games to a New Level

1UP - Skylanders' new competition brings together Disney's many universes.

The Dinesy/Activision money machine is spooling up. There's no doubting it will be profitable, but the "fun factor" seems like a very low multiple to me.

sarshelyam4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

I fail to see how it couldn't be perceived as fun. It takes the form factor of Skylanders, and the ever-expansive nature of LittleBigPlanet. The ability to not only collect your favorite characters, but to play as them in fully functional user-created worlds? That sounds amazing if you ask me.

WeAreLegion4111d ago

It sounds amazing...but it doesn't look amazing. From what we've seen, it looks pretty terrible.

Toy Story 3's toybox mode got it PERFECT! That's why I'm confused as to why Avalanche isn't making this one. They are the only studio that has made a great Disney game since last generation.

You have that absolutely wrong CrowTRobot. This is every bit Avalanche's game. I'm not sure where you heard otherwise, but every article points to Avalanche's successful implementation with the Toy Box Mode in TS3 and ultimately being the defining reason why we should be so excited for this release.

I don't speak for anyone else, but this game looks pretty damn cool to me. I wasn't interested in Skylanders because it took Spyro and made him generic in a cast of characters I didn't care much for.

Take the gameplay and interesting use of figures and apply Disney/Pixar characters that I love to the mix and boom; instant interest.

I can't wait to give this game a swing.

sarshelyam4110d ago

I fail to see why there isn't more interest in this product. Either I'm one of the few here comfortable to admit I like Disney games or, similarly, I'm one of the few here with kids who like Disney games.

Are there no parents out there looking at this as a great go-to for bringing the kiddos together and enjoying their favorite characters, worlds and more?

Am I the only parent here who is looking at the Toy Box mode with the same wonder and delight we have with LittleBigPlanet?

Am I the only one here who played Toy Story 3 and absolutely loved what Avalanche did there, eager to see how much further they've come with this?

It saddens me that we're not seeing such an engaging group of gamers, solo or parents, excited for this product.

It looks potentially like a ton of fun, but I am wondering who their audience is. Skylanders is clearly geared towards younger kids who you'd think would be the target market for any toy-based game. But let's list the things that Infinity includes that younger kids have trouble with:

-Free 3d camera
-Jumping puzzles
-Open-world gameplay (kids get lost without easily-findable objectives)
-Minecraft/LBP world-building
-Online connectivity (file sharing/multiplayer)
-Potential downloadable expansions that require actual DLC/Data management

I don't know about you guys, but every time my 7-year-old wanted to play any game that had ANY of the above features, he'd get frustrated and I wound up having to grab the controller and do it for him.

Maybe Infinity is trying to expand the toy market to teenagers, but I think that's a risk.

"I don't know about you guys, but every time my 7-year-old wanted to play any game that had ANY of the above features, he'd get frustrated and I wound up having to grab the controller and do it for him. "

This game, just like Disney itself, can be enjoyed by anyone of any age, it doesn't have a target audience, instead it has what is known in business as "mass marketing"... Usually very risky but it has literally worked perfectly for Disney for about two decades now. Mass marketing FYI, is a technique where you market generally to no real group, just advertise and draw in as many as possible. Or appeal to more than one group of people... Which Disney do very well, I think anyone can agree there lol.

Is Disney Infinity Coming To The PS5 & Xbox Series X?

There is a huge gap in the market at the moment. There aren’t many (if any) toys-to-life games available for the two consoles yet. A reboot or remake of the game would work so well, especially with Disney’s current roster of characters, films and TV shows.

Did Disney sell the rights to Activision? I never knew they had the rights to Disney Infinity.

They DO have the rights to Skylanders though.

Plus there's a financial reason every publisher gave up on the "toys to life" thing. So I doubt they'll revive any of them.

BrainSyphoned799d ago (Edited 799d ago )

It wasnt Skylanders fault Activision squeezed the cow too hard.

"During its earning calls, Activision confirmed that Skylanders: Swap Force had made them more money than Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed the numbers, putting Skylanders at a whopping $2 billion in revenue after it sold 175 million toys.May 7, 2014"

"Skylanders Reached the Milestone of 250 million figures sold in 2015 and passed $3 billion made"

Is it possible Disney Infinity or other toys to games could return, but I'll be honest I really hope they don't come back.

These kinds of games are just another way for the game studios to nickle and dime you for every cent you have.

Disney Infinity was a fun game I could play with my kid back in the day. I still have it and the 100+ toys and yes, it works on PS5. But my kid is a teenager now and we've both moved on to more serious games.

Fluke_Skywalker799d ago

Exact same thing here, we played Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions. Both were great but are now just two big boxes full of stuff that never gets used.

BLAKHOODe799d ago

We played Lego Dimensions, too.. and I still have all those toys. It also works on PS5.
