Not gunna lie, I'm shocked by how well this game is doing review wise. I enjoyed the demo, but I NEVER thought the reception was going to be this good. Giant Bomb are EXTREMELY critical, but not in the traditional sense. The games they give 5/5's to aren't perfect, but they don't nitpick on minor flaws that don't hamper the overall experience. This a review from a GAMER's perspective. Giant Bomb reviews games on the basis of entertainment value.

If you deeply enjoy a game throughout its entirety and want to replay it as soon as your done with it..it should be a 5/5.

I can't believe people are stillmad about this game and also Ninja Theory. I remember when people were saying "this game is trash and wait for the reviews to prove it." And now what? The game gets enormous praise so now "the reviewers obviously are all paid." I didn't hear this much moaning about Halo 4 reviews being obviously paid.

The game turned out better than we expected, even the story is better than we expected. Buy the game or don't, but get over it.

Edit: After having read it... that was one really short review as well. And logic of how the gameplay is handled at later levels with weapon required opponents being mixed in, I have to say their thought of "There's enough combat variety here to support multiple playthroughs" doesn't seem accurate except on earlier levels.

I played through normal and now on hard and they switch the enemies variety up earlier and it makes it that much more intense right from the start having to use either Angle/Demon weapons. It gets pretty intense. Normal wasn't much of a challenge but hard is making me really learn more combos and focused on the fight, so far its a blast

Luckily, Giant Bomb's reviews are always by individuals, not by the entire outfit, so you don't have to wonder why Giant Bomb gave it that score. Brad did. Jeff may totally disagree if he gets around to playing the game.

Brad's not your average reviewer. The dude is still a completionist on games he didn't even need to review - and if your entire living is playing games and writing about them, that's pretty much full-on gaming masochism. It's highly unlikely, @cgoodno, that he didn't finish the game or even try out harder modes before reviewing it. That said, I get the impression he didn't really follow DMC until now. Which is different for us. I'm still kinda miffed about this whole under-30fps reboot thing...

It seems as if Brad Shoemaker loves this the same way that Brad Jones (The Cinema Snob) loved Dredd 3D - he loved that enough to put it as his #1 film of last year, above Django, because it's just an action movie done extremely well (and I'm one of those crazy people who might just agree with him!). Did he analyze its accuracy to the comic books? No, he didn't need to. In that same way, Brad didn't find a profound, innovative game, or something worthy of old DMC canon, but it seems to have more personality than the demo led me to believe, and if you can throw out your desire for more DMC, it works. The observation that maybe the game isn't just stupid, it's self-aware stupid, is an interesting one, and it makes me rethink my lambasting of it in another comment thread after scouring the demo and reading what Polygon and Euro had to say.

Basically, it seems like a review of No More Heroes. Campy in order to be overly campy, but the gameplay *probably* isn't the best thing about it.

You see, to me, that's not combat variety. In fact, that's limiting combat variety by putting in earlier and more often weapon limiting opponents. Sure, they put you up against an angel and a demon weapon opponent or four at the same time, but the fact is that they tell you which weapon to use on these opponents rather than giving you the control you want over combat. That's not combat variety. That's combat dictation.

I still think that the mass majority of people who hated this game because of the character and world changes should probably play it and will probably enjoy it for what it is rather than bemoaning those few items. Is it different than DMC? Yeah, but it's what Capcom wanted and it still maintains a focus on the combat. IMHO, the major downside to the game, as far as gameplay, is the decision to create enemies that require specific weapons to kill.

I swear when they first show cased this there was absolutely no love for it...Even when the demo was out no love still. Now 5/5, and 9/10 reviews hit, everyone is on new dante's nuts now. It's not unplayable, but I wouldn't purchase it. I probably would of respected it if ninja theory made their own IP. Just as how I respected Heavenly Sword, and Enslaved. The fact that the game is being sold off of a brand alone is meh....I enjoyed DMC4 way more TBH (Demo wise).

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I too personally would take my own impression of a demo over the review of an entire game any day, I simply don't trust reviewers that much anymore...

Of course, if I happened to be interested in the demo I'lll follow reviews to see if it keeps good with my impressions or if the demo was just a well chosen ad. But if I get the feeling the game is mediocre or generic from the demo, chances are I won't be following it that much, maybe a rental later... Sure as hell not going to buy a game I disliked in my own test just because someone I don't even know says it's good.

Does it aways work? Of course not, I had missed out on Dragon's Dogma which I just got recently for example, now I have to deal with almost no one online to hire my pawn... And there's a ton of games that never got a Demo and I simply don't find to rent which I'll proably never get to play. But still I'll always try to start my own opinion on a game (be it by demo or rent) before even looking out for a reviewer opinion, I may miss out on some stuff, but never got a crappy game since I started doing that... And it's not like I can afford buying every game out there afterall, so I guess it's better to loose by not buying than loosing by buying wrong.

@bishop-BR Demos can sometimes give the wrong impression though. While a game like Bioshock has a great demo, games like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Bayonetta do not. Both games just take part of the game out and remove things that make them more fun. By that point in Bayonetta you have multiple weapons, more developed combos, and the option for equipment and items. Instead you are limited to the starting weapons and the bare minimum. Its fun but significantly less than the abilities you get 10-20 minutes into the game. The same basic idea goes with Castlevania. It's a bad representation of the full game.

Actually, no one said the game would review terribly. The prediction was that the game would review well, and you can look that up to see that. We always knew this game would score well because reviewers scored games like Enslaved or RE6 well. That doesn't prove anything other than that reviewers like Easy games.

I played the PS3 demo.. the framerates weren't stable..

I just wish I can use my PS3 controller when I try the PC version.. I've been scared of DS3Tool messing up my USB ports on my main system :(

Motioninjoy actually uses DS3Tool as frontend I think. The Motioninjoy drivers work perfectly fine. I've been using it for over a year now. Also bought a bluetooth dongle for like 2 bucks on dealextreme.
Wireless works great. Even 2 controller support works right out of the box.

I do use the 360 profile of course. Some games require the 360-gamepad which is kinda confusing on the buttons because ingame shows 360-faces ( A, B,X,Y etc instead of X[]^O).

I suggest getting a 3rd party 360 controller. The dead zone isn't going to be as good as the one on the DualShock 3, but it's good enough. :/

We all know that there have been vocal fans of previous DMC titles that over the past year have come out and said that they wanted and believed this game would fail both critically and financially. U can't beat the game in 3 1/2hrs. If you did you been playing it for weeks and mastered it and skipped or already have all the extra things to get. First time through it will take between 10 to 13hrs depending if you actually explore to find all the keys, doors, and souls to free like I did will make it longer.

I've been playing since Friday and I'm having a blast with it. Hats off to Ninja Theory from me, they've done a good job on this, and that's coming from a DMC fan.

Combat isn't as deep or fast, but still a lot of fun and the graphical style is outstanding. I even quite like the new Dante, mostly because of the voice actor who sells the character pretty well.

Swearing needs to be toned down a bit. Sometimes it's fine, other times it's like a kid trying to shock his parents without understanding the context.

Also, some rough dialog in there.

For their first DmC game, I'm pretty happy. Since we'll doubtless be getting a sequel at somepoint, hopefully they sit down and start playing with the combat. I'd love to see styles brought into it again.

Everybody has a different view on what a reboot should be, so I think that's a big sticking point.

To me, it needs to keep the core of the franchise, but after that it's fair game. I've been playing since Friday now, and while the combat is a bit slower and not quite as deep, it still feels like it's staying true to the franchise.

Everything else around it has been great. I like the new Dante thanks to the voice actor, and the platforming sections are quite enjoyable. The art style is terrific, as well. Even the story is fun, even if the dialogue needs work.

In short, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

My copy is in the mail and I cannot wait to play it! Although I do have to say this. Ninja Theory make good enough games, their ideas are great, and the way they handle graphics is awesome. But they need to keep their mouth shut about the whole sales crap. Their best selling game to this day is still Heavenly Sword. A PS3 exclusive that sold through phenomenally in 2007 when the user base of the PS3 was laughable. Then they have the nerve to complain about it after great sales and good reviews. Just be humble and accept that one day, if you shut your mouth and keep putting up good games, youll become a premier developer.

I have been following his work for years, beginning when he started work at Gamespot. Brad is straight forward and tells it like it is, for instance is was spot on with his recent RE6 review. Although, 5/5 seems high, you have to remember that Giant Bomb does not award 1/2 stars and Brad felt it was better than a 4/5.

I agree with many of his points, especially that the games atmosphere, aesthics, and gameplay are great and feel fresh and this reboot has given life to a dying franchise. The last great DMC game was 3 and that was 8 or 9 years ago (almost a generation) and DMC 2 & 4 were terrible. This is a nice surprise and haters should give it an honest shot and if you are a true fan of this franchise, then you should realize this game is great.

How in the world does an action game with NO LOCK ON get a 9 or 10 out of 10? I don't even care about anything else as much as how much that DESTROYS the ability to fight things appropriately. All for a "quick action weapon switch" that could've been implemented on the control pad.

This isn't even okay for a new IP title to do. There's systems designed for these types of games for a reason; it's called efficiency and fluidity. If there was an introduction to a new system that maybe had worked better, I'd have been okay with that too. There's nothing in place to help with the issue of no targeting. It doesn't exist. Why is this okay to so many people??

I thought the same way as you did. I was kind of skeptical if no lock on would work but I had no problems with it. It automatically locks on to a character and pretty much attacked the guy that I wanted. Very rare did it go to someone I didn't want to fight. Maybe like 3 to 5 times the hole 13hrs I played it.

I honestly don't know anymore bro. Just looked at their review of Bayonetta and they gave it a 4/5. I thought bayonetta was a better DMC than this game. Amazing how the western press gives more praise when its a western dev doing a "japanese" game. One thing is for sure though, the casuals will absolutly eat this game up(just like they do with COD) and then gloat on the forums to justify their purchase.

It's okay, I'm sad to see that it got such a positive score but what are you going to do? Nothing, there's nothing you can do. I've played it for 2 hours now...despised every minute of it.

So I have a right to hate this game...even more so than before.

Everything is okay though, real Devil May Cry fans know what a real Devil May Cry is...this isn't it.

I was very critical of this game when I heard of the reinvention of Dante. However, with all of these reviews giving it stellar marks, I decided to give it a spin. Bought my copy at Best Buy today and got Resident Evil 6 for only $10 extra! You can't beat that.

The user reviews on Metacritic are both hilarious and infuriating. Anyone who still wants to pretend like this game sucks just because they dislike the new Dante is a complete asshole. No, none of these critics were bribed: it's just a good fucking game. Because Ninja Theory makes quality products.

LOL CAPCOM payed every game reviewer in the world for higher rating so it means that developing and marketing costs of the new DMC is way more lower then high reviewing paying cost.. lolx...

After the recent poor game releases by Capcom, capcom definitely dont have the money to pay every f...ing reviewer in the world for DMC rating, if it was Activision then activision has the money to do soo :D

... Accept it Fanboys, DMC is a good game and ninja Theory did a great job in doing so, stop hating or and stop telling others not to play this..

Personally i have finished this game and it was amazing.. Loved the story, loved the characters and loved the graphics.. Ninja theory is definitely overcoming its weakness improving game by game Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and now DMC... Well Done.
