This is an ANNUAL list, not ALL TIME, which is why you're not going to see Atari on there. It's only active studios.

Mojang has had an absolutely stellar 2012. I don't even like Minecraft, but acknowledge that they've absolutely killed it in 2012 - they've probably made more profit per employee than any of the other names on there.

I agree with just about everyone on the list of top 50 developers, but the placement of these studios is completely wrong and this list could easily be cut down to a top 30.

44. Sony Santa Monica. Beyond ignorant, yes God of War is pretty much their only standout franchise (Kinetic was a decent racer), but they aid in the development of EVERY 1st PARTY PLAYSTATION EXCLUSIVES. That alone puts them in the top 30 (if not far higher).

41. Criterion are basically the kings of the 3rd party racing game. Top 30.

39. Quantic Dream, are the leading studio in acting, emotion, character modeling, mo-cap, and everything that makes games comparable to movies. Top 30.

37. Id. Rage was a good game, not great, but good. However, Id's history is more than enough to give them a Top 30, especially when it comes to pushing tech.

32. Crytek. For the same reason as Id. WHen it comes to pushing tech they have gone above and beyond any developer to date, and that achievement alone is enough for a top 30.

31. Sony online entertainment. Makes some of the best MMO's out there as well as many pick up and play games for PC. Got the first true Console MMO up and running. Top 30.

21. Double Fine. Shouldn't be anywhere in the top 30. I enjoyed Psychonaughts, and Brutal Legend was decent, but No.

10. Riot Games. No.

9. Arkane Studios. H#!! NO. Placement too high.

8. FromSoftware. No. Placement too high.

4. Platinum Games. Top 30 Yes. Number 4 H#!! no.

2. Mojang. Success story YES. Number 2 H#!! F'ink NO. Top 30 H#!! no.

Valve and Nintendo are numbers 1 & 2, in any order your desire (Nintendo simply because of legacy and it includes EVERY developer except Retro and Gamefreak). Those 2 companies have done the most for PC and console gaming, with Sony (console gaming), MS (console online, DX), IBM (PC), NVIDIA (PC), and AMD (PC) right behind them.

they are on of the only big studios doing absolutely what they like and want to do rather than following the market. even though they only came out with kinect games in 2012(I think?) they had the double fine adventure going on and amnesia fortnight was awesome. double fine is a real breath of fresh air in this industry.

Platinum games at number 4 lol. Yeah they make games that don't follow everything else thats out there but they couldn't get Bayonetta working properly on the PS3, Vanquish is a 4 hour campaign story and the graphics on both games are crap. Rockstar North should be at least number 2 and Platinum games should be are 20 or so. But hey its their list they can choose what they want but that list just confirms what I've thought all along, that Edge really don't have a clue about games and what people want.

I also don't see why Mojang is number 2. I think a spot like that has to be earned over the course of many years and you have to prove yourself whilst constantly moving forward. I think Naughty Dog have done that from Crash, to improving to Jak n Daxter and then really blowing my mind this generation. Plus, they are awesome to the community and give off a really positive vibe.

However, Valve are just the complete package. I'm not even a huge PC / Steam type of guy and I only really play Portal, but I can just tell Valve are awesome. High rated games, brilliant community interraction and the inability to count to three lol :-)

Without Blizzard, Ubisoft Montreal and Bethesda, there would be...

No Diablo, no Starcraft, no Warcraft, no World of Warcraft, the MMO genre would suffer from a huge setback, there would be no Assassin's Creed, no recent Prince of Persia, Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six titles (all 80+ btw), oh and that game that stole E3? Watch Dogs? Also Ubisoft Montreal. There would be no Oblivion, no Fallout 3, no Skyrim, no huge epic worlds with easy to create mods, the open world genre would suffer a huge setback. That MMO that you're so excited about? Elder Scrolls Online? Wouldn't exist.

So tell me, which studios do yo believe deserve a higher rank? Mojang? The studio that thought it was a smart idea to write a game in Java? Majong is a studio that will disappear as fast as it came onto the radar. Blizzard, Ubisoft Montreal and Bethesda have stood the test of time. They are here today, they will be here tomorrow and they will be here five years from now, bringing us awesome games year after year after year.

BLIZZARD: I give you WOW (it stopped being good years ago) but that was in 2004, and the best game they've published is Diablo and it was made by CONDOR, bought by Blizzard and renamed as Blizzard North, those developers are long gone and Diablo III was a flop (in quality)and the always online BattleNet is bullshit.

UBISOFT: I liked 2 PoP(SOT and WW) of all the saga. Assassin's Creed 1 was the most repetitive game I played this generation. the second one was better but they have released too many.
Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, shooter saga number 145, and numer 174 yeah right...good huh?
and what they showed in E3...you mean Script_Dogs? yes I was totally blown away for like a minute until it turned into a third person shooter once more.
And the Uplay DRM is bullshit.

BETHESDA: Oh...bethesda, they were good til Morrowind. Oblivion was alright I guess but Skyrim was too casual trying to get the mass audience and get jokes in TBBT.
Fallout 3 was just alright, its the weakest of the main Fallout games.

'Welcome to the Edge Developer Awards, a new, annual list of the best development studios in the world. '
The rest of the opening goes on to say how they're judging the studios not on revenue, sales figures or review scores but a mix of things like creative ability, technical ability, imagination, ingenuity, etc.

So, it's more a look at who they think are doing things they're excited by at the moment rather than what they have done in the past.

I'll repeat again just to clarify (as it seems the person who wrote the article for this website can't read and appears to have got a lot of people more butthurt than they need be) the list is NOT the Edge's award for 'best developer of all time'.

You don't play Runescape so you don't know how much they have ruined that game. I started playing in 2005/2006 and they have completely destroyed Runescape. They spit in the face of their members and don't do anything about the bots. It's just a completely different game. Runescape died back in 2007 when they took away free trade and Wildy. Yes, I know they brought it back but it isn't the same. EOC is a complete piece of shit update and makes absolutely no sense. They are trying to be more like WoW rather than trying to be like Runescape. Ever since Andrew Gower left and Mark Gerhard took over that game has been going downhill. It's terrible because I've put at least 7 years into that game and I can't stand it anymore.

This list has literally no intelligent thought put into it. It actually looks like they took the developers of their favorite games, until about 6 or 7, then after that they were just Googling the name of the developers of really known games that they have never played before.

Let me get this straight. Is it an all time greatest dev awards? So Mojang seems stupid and Nintendo should be at the top (no discussion there, it's a fact!) followed by Valve and Rockstar. Or is it a greatest devs of this gen? Because ND would probably be at the top probably followed by Nintendo, Ubi or Bethesda (maybe Valve and R* as well).

This man with Metal Gear has done far more for the PS console than any other developer has done. He helped shape the gaming world for other dev compaines and console games.

Bethesda Should not be that high up yeah they make good games but they are full of bugs and glitches every time thats not a sign of a good developer and Kojima Productions should be top 5 all his games are top notch . also wtf is Mojang doing there they have release 1 game 1!

Rockstar tops my list of developers by far. No company is more passionate about their games and nearly every single title they release is of superb quality. GTA IV and RDR top my list of best games this gen.

Not sure why people are acting all upset over a list that is based off opinion. I bet there isn't a single one of us who could come up with a list that EVERYONE agreed on. It's pretty tough to come up with a top 50 list.

This is an interesting list, some of the developers I've never even heard of, but it isn't something worth arguing over.

8.From Software- really? I know Demon and Dark Souls are popular but dam there are so many devs who have pushed gaming in many ways and have taken huge risk and have delivered much beyond From Software.
21. Double fine -umm hell no.
33. Ok how many games did 343 make? any guesses anyone? and they are higher than Id?
34. Codemasters and Criterion are a lil too low to be honest considering they are one of the best in making racing games and just by the sheer number of successes they've had.

Also what totally put me off is Dice and Bioware not being in top 10.

DICE-well anyone who has followed war based sandbox shooters know why they should be in top 10. IF not for pioneering tech in graphics, or winning best sound year after year, or making such great multiplayer gameplay and who can forget mirrors edge? Well anyone who knows their games know what I'm talking about.

Bioware-Ok seriously this not being in top 10 really bothered me.
Lemme list their contributions: Baldurs Gate, MDK, Neverwinter Nights, Kotor, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, SWTOR. The king of rpg's not being in top 10 doesnt make sense. I've played all of these games and almost every other rpg out there besides jrpg in the past 10 years and well bioware have taken a step further with every game and have literally set new trends in rpg games which others have adapted. There are other devs who have contributed too but Bio have had a huge effect in the industry.

So to summarise I would like to say something I have not said since my first mmo years ago.
