Man, those guys at Gearbox have shown so much love for their fans! Codes for Goldenkeys on Twitter, FB and YouTube, free Haloween skins for all characters, etc. I wish all developpers would follow their example...

ChronoJoe4120d ago (Edited 4120d ago )

Goldenkeyes don't cost them anything. It's hardly love for their fans. It's marketing and public relations, it's done to promote and keep people interested in the game.

born2live4120d ago

I wouldn't say it costs them nothing... I remember them tweeting codes every 6 hrs, and wondering if they ever slept! Yes, it is marketing, and it works! I don't see SE, Capcom or Activision doing anything like it...

admiralvic4120d ago

But Goldenkeys mean NOTHING to fans... and very little to casuals.

The keys merely open a chest that has a purple / pink tier weapon, but doesn't give you legendary / unique weapons. If you're level 50 (like me), then you won't gain anything from that and you can always copy your save to have unlimited keys if you so desire. Also since we can freely drop / pick up weapons, it would PROBABLY be easier to ask someone for a legendary weapon / farm it than to obtain a gold key (since they're pretty random and run out fairly quickly).

Also the Halloween costume was always part of the game and some people reported it as an item that drops. Was giving it a nice gesture? Yes. Should we be singing Gearboxes praises because they enabled a code to give you an item in the game? No.

Wedge194120d ago

I commend Gearbox's continued support of their game through all of the DLC and the little events like this. Still waiting on that level-cap increase though.

admiralvic4120d ago

They just increased the drop rate of a weapon type... not exactly like they're bending over backwards to support fans. I mean it's appreciated, though it's not really much of anything.

Wedge194120d ago

If it was just this, I would agree with you, but I'm talking about this in addition to everything else. Characters, DLC, changing up drop rates, potentially a season 2 of story based DLC, soon to be revealed level cap changes etc. They really fully support their game and make the replayability value extremely high.

admiralvic4120d ago (Edited 4120d ago )

1 character was added, with no more currently planned. (or to our knowledge anyway)
So far all of the DLC packs have been outsourced.
And? A lot of games rebalance the game or fix problems after release... in a lot of ways Gearbox could have gotten around to this a LOT faster too. Like it took them 2 months to patch The Bee and this happened after the second DLC pack released on consoles.
I don't recall hearing anything about that, but if it's more outsourced content, then they can keep it.

I am not saying Gearbox isn't doing anything, but having an event where they increase the drop rate of a weapon, more golden key codes, and such aren't making the game much better (if at all).

ChronoJoe4120d ago

Paid DLC isn't exactly a fan service.

The extra character was a pre-order incentive.

They're not doing consumers any favours. They're supporting their games, yes; but making a lot of money off it too. Not sure that deserves any praise.

Time to play a lot of Borderlands 2 I guess.

I’m glad Embracer is selling them. I hope someone other than MS buys them and frees them up to make great games.

Knightofelemia20d ago

Says right in the article Take Two bought Gearbox off of Embracer.

Sgt_Slaughter20d ago

Reading the article is hard for most people it seems

Knightofelemia19d ago

@Sgt Slaughter

I just like how when a studio automatically goes up for sale. People automatically think Microsoft is just going to jump on it like a fat kit eating a cake.

I mean, having multiple CEOs is a redundancy, soooo... Good luck Randy!!!

Layoffs Hit Gearbox Staff Hours After Embracer Sale

Less than a day after the news that Take-Two Interactive would acquire Borderlands developer Gearbox Entertainment from the embattled Embracer Group, layoffs have already begun. In the hours since former Gearbox employees were made redundant, they've taken to Twitter, and while the total number of staff impacted remains hard to determine, it sounds significant.

I am glad to see Gearbox under Take Two. But lay offs I am not surprised they aren't the only company cutting staff and they won't be the last. And I have a feeling the Borderlands movie honestly will tank when it comes out. The cast is just wow a complete mess Lilith is too old Roland is to small and scrawny. They are missing Brick and Mordecai and I don't think Tiny Tina will be as bat shit nuts as she is in the games.

The movie will definitely flop. It has all the usual actors that have casted in all these video game movie adaptations. Whenever I see Kevin Hart or The Rock or Jack Black i just know it's a cash grab. More so when it's all three together. (The Rock isn't in it)

Juancho5125d ago

When you see actors like that in a movie you can expect it to be bad, i definitely do. They have good chemistry but the movie doesnt shine because it just banks on their presence and people going to see them.

Inverno25d ago

Pfft, literally said yesterday how it must be nerve wracking for the devs and then this shite. People aren't looking to get fired, and these companies don't care in the slightest.

Andrew33625d ago

People aren't looking to get fired. Good insight.

Inflation post 1/20/2020 is really causing pain to everyone. The cherry on top was companies waiting post 11/8/2022 to start doing layoffs. Hmm, I wonder why they waited past that date... Staring with Google in January 2023 and everyone following suit there after.

anast25d ago

Companies that over-hire should be fined heavily and the CEO loses his/her bonus during layoffs, and that money can go to the workers that they laid off.

Leeroyw25d ago

There's a lot going on in this post that needs further scrutiny.

It's a game forum. But you are free to chose one and argue it.

I hope Pitchford got let go for the sake of employee safty. The man is a walking grease fire waiting to happen.
