Dark Souls 2 – 6 ways to make it “accessible” without ruining it

While the announcement there’s going to be a Dark Souls 2 is great, some have been worried by co-director Tomohiro Shibuya’s comments that it would be “more straightforward and understandable”. It’s not the end of the world though; here are 6 ways From Software can pull it off.

I agree with almost all of those points. However, by the time I played Dark Souls, most of the information I needed to figure things out were available online somewhere.

TopDudeMan4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

yeah, if you want that information like covenants or weapons, you can always seek it out. So they don't really need to put it in the game.

Edit: No Blastoise. Have to correct you there. Dark souls has a BIG online community. Not necessarily a good one. In my experience, the members of the online community are unbelievably stuck up about the way you play the game. I mean, please forgive me for using a weapon they put in the game because it's very effective.

Blastoise4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

It's stuff like this which is why Dark Souls has such a good online community. Everyone's always helping each other out

Edit @ Above. Well, I hang around on the Wiki and the chats a lot. And a I've met a lot of cool people and most people are willing to help you out & answer any questions and stuff. *Shrug*

I don't want to go through a bunch of wiki pages to learn simple cause-effect information that should be implemented or implied IN the game.

The whole game is about the experience of discovery.
Everything from weapons/armor, abilities, levels, enemies, story...etc to the tons and tons of easter eggs you find in the game.

It's what makes this game special compared to other games.

Some are going to look online for answers but don't ruin the experience for people who just want to enjoy the game as it was made to be by adding all these unnecessary "straight up" answers.

Any of the things listed can be figured out with a little more game play time, AND all of them are part of the game and story and the whole experience of what the original designers want the player to feel.

The author clearly does not understand the soul series and only treating it as an everyday action game.

i dont get why people are worrying about them saying they want to make it more accessible since how does that mean it will be easier they could be talking about the god aweful menu system which puts alot of people off.

ziggurcat4118d ago

kind of an awful list, really, and precisely what they shouldn't do because it would ruin the experience.

TopDudeMan4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

I don't know. I think the weapon upgrade is simple enough without them having to explain it. I don't think they need signposting, either.

The only one I agree with is 2. They do need to make it easier to summon your friends. I don't even care if it breaks the immersion for a moment because having another player come in your game, completely naked, waving their murakumo around is gonna break your immersion, anyway. They need to make it easier to play the game with friends.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

All the bosses are only from Dark Souls. No Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Demon Souls
