Nintendo announces brand new Pokemon games for 3DS

After days of waiting and several teases, Nintendo, Game Freak, and the Pokemon Company finally unveiled its brand new video game. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata made the announcement during a short, live-streamed video segment just a short while ago.

Although I feel the "Axis" thing is closer to correct.

Well Kingofwiiu, you always have to consider that some people simply aren't interested in those (Don't see why, but hey it's them, not you or me). Personally I'm buying a 3DS for this, but I'll be picking up KH3D, Tales of the Abyss and Kid Icarus Uprising. I'll see about other games eventually down the line. But through and through, Pokemon X and Y sold me right away, other than that I wasn't going to worry about getting one...anytime soon at least.

I'm hoping that they might eventually make some sort of open world Pokemon game for Wii U with online features and such (I made a post a long while back about what I'd want in one, but anyways...) that would make the Wii U an instant buy for me, personally, rather than waiting and possibly losing interest in buying one at all.

That's one of the reasons why I bought a 3DS. I knew Black 2 and White 2 would be the final full Pokemon DS games. They had to stop at one point.

As a fan of Pokemon I want to continue the experience so I bought the XL when it was released. Also there's something about playing old games you owned on new tech that make them feel like new. Like when I got my Vita I played some old PSP games and they felt like a new experience, so buying a 3DS for DS games itself is a good reason too.

Im not a fan of Pokemon (Nintendos cry babies attack) however i do admire the cell shaded art style (i love cell shading except in Wind Waker).

Also, the 3DS has plenty of 2013 titles Besides Pokemon X/Y and Mystery Dungeon. Just to name a few: Animal Crossing, Etrian Odyssey IV, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and (hopefully)Bravely Default. There's the next Brainage, too, but I don't really consider that a game.

I have nothing at all against the Vita. I want it to do great and have amazing games. But there actually are some good games coming out on the 3DS within the next 9 months. Off the top of my head Monster Hunter is releasing in March and Animal Crossing is releasing by June, supposedly. I don't personally care about those games but they sure are popular in Japan. Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Monster Hunter are all system sellers. The Vita needs a game like that.

Pokemon didn't kill the PSP and I doubt it will kill the Vita.

Pokemon will sell millions and sell millions of 3DS systems, but it's been a year or so, and I think Sony has some guns that will sure start a fire for the Vita.

Tales of hearts R will move some systems and One Piece should as well. Only time will tell how those games will really do.

Psp had monster hunter to defend itself... in fact, it had a lot more than the vita is forecast to have in any region this whole next year... at a relatively cheaper price point... with more dev support... coming off of sonys ps2 high point.

It isn't curtains for Vita, but it certainly isn't looking good and any one thing seems incapable of changing that on its own(with anything capable of doing so seeming unlikely at this point)

True but the PSP had Monster Hunter, the Vita doesn't. And yes Tales of Hearts R will sell systems, but only for the week it came out. (See the weeks Tales of Innocence R, Project Diva and Persona 4 Golden came out. Sales spiked those weeks but the very next week it went back to the 4,000-6,000 territory). I'm not saying this to spread doom and gloom or jump on the hate bandwagon, i'm saying this as someone who owns and plays a Vita regularly who is concerned. This year alone Pokemon X & Y, Dragon Quest VII and Monster Hunter 4 will be coming out for the 3DS along with other first and third party exclusives. If Sony doesn't turn this around soon things could get bad. Bioshock Vita is hardly going to be a system seller. Unless they change gameplay a lot, it's not really suited for handheld gaming. And besides, that game hasn't even started development yet, (Levine confirmed a while back) and as time goes on, I doubt it's going to see the light of day. Vita still has many chances to get back on track.

In the west, it needs a GTA game to get it noticed. Tearaway looks interesting but again I don't think people will rush out to buy a console for that game, just as they didn't for LBP. Failing that, I think an Elder Scrolls game would interest a lot of people.

In Asia, Sony needs to get JRPGs onto the system. If FFX ever comes out, it should sell systems. But they are way behind Nintendo who have Pokemon, Professor Layton, Dragon Quest (the newly announced DQ7 remake which was originally a PS2 exclusive.. it's a blow that it's not coming to Vita) and of course Monster Hunter! These are all huge games that sell consoles and Sony have nothing NEAR that level right now.

Of course, it doesn't help the Vita that I, as an owner really want to play Crisis Core and Type-0 and can't download either. I know I am not the only one in this position.

ps. Re: Pokemon X and Y - I hope they change the gameplay a bit too and not just a graphics update as the franchise has felt a bit stale but it looks like they're heading in the right direction. I'm interested.

I just thought they were going to go above and beyond with this one but I feel like I have already seen this before. I was have been waiting for years for a 3d pokemon title including lush environments, semi organic animations (this is pokemon after all) etc. But I'm not to wowed by this and the visuals are not that great either.

I certainly see where your coming from with the expectations. But Colosseum was essentially a glorified battle animator with a little bit of "story" and extras tagged on. These games are going to be fully realized RPG's with dozens of routes, new cities, new pokemon, new scripting etc.. I think it would be unreasonable to compare a tightly focused battle based game such as colosseum with a game that is using the 3DS cart memory capabilities (currently 2gb) for all of the other things mentioned above.

Kobe offers a fair view that I also share. I haven't seen a need to actually play half of the last gens because Pokemon has been stale for a while, and this shows nothing new besides graphics to add to the Pokemon experience. Although I understand that it's sensible not to try too innovative things at once with the best of videogame sellers from a business perpective (CoD, Mario Bros, etc). Well, Nintendo are taking as many precautions as possible to make sure that their hardware and software are as watertight as possible. I'm not sure I can see their console being hacked by October.

.. and it has to be GOOD translations (aka non castrated versions: e.g. UCGA) of those franchises to work. Resistance, CoD, AC has failed to live up to the hype.

And that's only to hold a candle against Mario, Pokemon and MH.

It need unique and fun games, not watered-down console games. Yeah Uncharted GA might be good, but why play it when Uncharted 3 is better in every way?
