The Last Guardian Launching on PS4, Majora's Mask for 3DS, and More Predictions for 2013

GR: With 2012 now behind us, we set our sights on the future and all of the excitement that 2013 will inevitably hold. Last year was a bit lackluster due to two consoles that are starting to show their age. If anything, 2012 was the calm before the storm that will rain down all over 2013.

As such, we here at GameRevolution figured it was a good time to dig out our thinking caps and make a few predictions on what the next twelve months may hold. So without further ado, let's get right into it.

I don't think the PS3 has even been pushed to its limits, let alone 'shows its age'.

Merrill4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

Agreed, Far Cry is a blast, but it looks pretty bad in most area's, i.e. screen tearing, bad textures, pop in, etc.

I need a new console for my 50 inch Samsung LED, the PS3 doesn't do it justice.

Kevin ButIer4121d ago

Nowadays... a 7 year old computer clearly shows it's age. Still, The Last of Us is a good example to argue that this is not necessarily a bad thing.

dbjj120884121d ago

I agree. You don't have to look far for the PS3 to show it's age as the frame rate on nearly every game sucks.

da_2pacalypse4121d ago

Have never played the PS3 version, but the xbox version was pretty good looking, considering how big the game was.

On topic, though I don't at all regret buying my ps3, as I've played many exclusives that I love very much, I'll be very upset if the Last Guardian is not launched on the PS3. One of the biggest reason I bought a PS3 to begin with was to play the Last Guardian, please make this true!

AHHHHH who am I kidding... I'll buy a PS4 to play it -_-

chukamachine4121d ago

Openworld games need ram.

PS3 is an old system now. But for games that do not require as much and have a very optimised engine(uncharted) games can look great.

PS3 has 1ppu and 6 usable spu's.

So it's a single core processor, and has spu's that can help in other area's.

If the PS3 had came with a dual core cpu and spu's, all of the games would be 30fps and some 60fps.

I'm looking forward to PS4 now.

Always like looking at new things.

OhReginald4121d ago

maybe, but EA always say they max out the ps3 with all their games.

I think crysis 3 (at least the console versions) will look the same as crysis 2 just run a lil better since it will be better optimized for consoles.

Raoh4121d ago

LOL you believe that? didn't they say they maxed out current gen with crysis 2?

GG said they were about half maxed with killzone 2, pushing it but not yet done with ps3's power after killzone 3.

blah blah blah blah..

Yeah I'd like new hardware, mainly for the new features but, there are still great games that can be made on current consoles, well, at least on ps3.

Ezz20134121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

didn't they said that with crysis 2 and uncharted 3 ended up beating the hell out of it and won all the gfx awards in 2011 and still till his day have no match on consoles
and crysis 2 is no where near killzone 3 when it come to gfx
even halo 4/gears 3 look better than crysis 2

1upgamer994121d ago

It is funny you posted that link. When I read the comment that PS3 has not been maxed, this article is the one that I was thinking of. Less than 1 percent of current gen left after Crysis 3. I wonder how well it runs with the systems being pushed that hard. I am sure Crytek would not have done it if the systems were capable. Very cool!!!

NukaCola4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

Crysis 2 on consoles looks pretty good but the best?..not at all. Maxed out my butt. Halo 4 and Killzone 3 both look better than Crysis 2 on their respective consoles. Crysis on PC does look great, but does not max out a console. Last of Us will look better than Crysis 3 on PS3, guaranteed.

EDIT: Wrote Crysis on PC when I meant PS3. PS3 exclusives are always better than Multiplats on PS3. Of course Crysis on PC will look incredible.

It doesn't matter. If your competitor releases a new system, you have to release one too.

wishingW3L4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

PS3 is limited by its memory so even if devs could squeeze the Cell a bit more nothing can be done if there's no memory left. Sony has already shrinked the OS's memory foot-print all they can and is still bigger than the Xbox's OS but that's just how it is. =/

fermcr4121d ago

At this point, The Last Guardian looks like it's vaporware.

ElectricKaibutsu4121d ago

That was the game that was going to be my reason for buying a PS3. I ended up having to find other reasons but it took me awhile. I'll be picking up a PS4 either way but I hope it will be released eventually. I can't believe it missed this whole generation...

bunfighterii4121d ago

While games still look great on PS3 (and 360) they're saddled by their lack of memory. I love my PS3, and I agree there's a lot of life left yet in the system, but a PS4 would be a day one purchase for me!

isyourhouseonfire4121d ago

You're joking right? The PS3 was dead on arrival thanks to the X360. It's been time to move on from BOTH consoles for a few years now.

Ezz20134121d ago

"The PS3 was dead on arrival thanks to the X360"
WTF ?!

Ogygian4121d ago

They were both dead on arrival as the PC was far better than both, and has only been eclipsing them further ever since. I do love PS3-Xbox360 fanboyism - it's like arguing whether a Ford Fiesta is better than a Toyota Prius.

saint_seya4121d ago

looooooool u have no clue at all of what ure talking about.. ure not a fanboy... ure a troll boy..

Ogygian4121d ago

The PS3 is a weak piece of trash from almost a decade ago. Mine sits on my desk gathering dust while I use my state of the art PC for modern games. Trust me when I say that the PS3 has been pushed as far as possible by games such as Farcry 3.

forevercloud30004121d ago

When your PC can legally play games like Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, etc....then you can talk about how awesome PC is.

PC elitism is moot. Everyone's PC is different. My current RIG could not handle any current gen games for sure. I can't afford to upgrade it, less I would have to sacrifice the funds for all the exclusive games I get via console. Fact of the matter is, the biggest games in the industry always perform better on Console, they are far more convenient and cost efficient. No one is going to upgrade their PC every year just so they can play one game.

Bordel_19004121d ago

After I bought a new gaming PC last year I realized how antiquated and slow the consoles are (X360 and PS3). Low-res textures, low resolution, extremely bad frame-rates (most games struggle to maintain even 30 fps.), low quality rendering, slow load times, very limited functionality, and the list goes on, etc.

The good thing about PS3 is that it has some very good exclusives, and it's cheaper than a good gaming PC, this is what saves it.

solar4121d ago

i want The Last Guardian so bad >.<

showtimefolks4121d ago

i say its a safe bet this will be a launch title for ps4. sony world wide studios sent some of their best people not my words but words from studio's president.

just imagibe if we see this game running not just trailer but on stage demo, if sony plays its cards right which i think they will than at E3 they will blow the roof off

show last guardian running on ps4 in stunning HD 1080P

Show Gt6 on stage Demmo, and please don't be like 1000 cars when 300-440 of them are actually worth driving, so give us 350 great looking cars instead of 650 generic ones. and thats coming from a huge GT fan. also please look at how forza includes some community features online please add some of those to next GT

Show Uncharted 4 trailer, or atleast announce that ND are working on a new UC game

Killzone 4 needs to be a launch title, show ps4's power with a launch trailer and or stage demo

Than there are the unknowns:

what are sucker punch working on?

ready at dawn is a 2nd party studio which is working on a next gen title

and this is my personal wish list: i don't see a lot of this happening but i hope sony proves me wrong and show bunch of this stuff:

Sony buys THQ or some of its Ip's
Syphon Filter game for PS4

Getaway series reboot, fine some developers with open world game experience maybe the ones that did Sleeping dogs

ask Insomniac to do a proper Ratchet and Clank game

sorry for going off topic but i am really excited to see what sony has in store for ps4 in fall 2013. we know next to nothing about what's to come in fall 2013

2pacalypsenow4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

Screen tearing is awful on pc too unless you use vsync and then you have input lag because of the vsync and then it lock you FPS to what you monitor refreshes to most people dont have 120hz monitor most game at 60hz

@spartanlemur so its a weak piece of trash because its old and cant keep up with new technology its only 6 years old no duh i can even play any games from 2008 +on my pc with my 7800 gtx , but not everyone can buy a $400-1k video cards to play far cry in Max settings at 1080p.
Funny I have a great gaming pc with a gtx 690 but I still spend more time on my Ps3 and xbox 360 because of the great games you can play on ps3 and not Pc.
You sound like snob on your comment or a desperate PC gamer that knows Consoles sell more games and get priority ,So you knock on consoles to make yourself feel better ...
SMh people like you make the Pc community seem like zealots

Bordel_19004121d ago

That's not completely true.

On PC you actually have a choice to choose between:

- Enable Vsync
- Disable Vsync and uncap your frames
- Disable Vsync and cap fps slightly above or below monitor refresh
- Disable Vsync but cap fps to your monitor's refresh.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe you have the GTX690 card. With a card like this most games would not suffer from awful screen tearing, running without vsync.

On console many games are vsynced to 30 fps, or they're not vsynced at all. Since consoles are so weak, they barely manage to render between 20-30 frames per second (with some exceptions). This generates much bigger input lag than on a good PC.

I have a PS3 and all cross-platform games are bounds and leaps better on my PC, it's like comparing PS3 to PS1, only games I play on my PS3 are PS3 exclusives.

black9114121d ago

David Cage recently Stated the ps3 still has alot of power left.

Cam9774121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

No, it really has. The Last Of Us will show us it's final efforts alongside B:TS. Yesterday I played AC3 and to be fair, it looks like crap. I fear the reality of GTAV on consoles will ba poor too.

Eyeco4121d ago

oh come on man seriously ? 3 years ago, I might have agreed with you when realistically all 3 next gen SHOULD have been announced, but do you know how far late we are in this gen for you to be saying that ? could you imagine if someone said the same thing 2007 about the PS2 or even 2002 with the PS1 ? In fact could you imagine if the 360 and PS3 weren't even announced much less released at that point ?

I honestly dont see the PS3 going beyond TLOU, and if you don't like that fact why should it bother you ?, it's not like the PS3 is like the Sega Saturn or Dreamcast where we never saw the true capabilities due to short life span.
its been on the market for 6-7 7 years, 360 7-8 (YES THATS ALMOST A DECADE) realistically if you follow history this gen should have been wrapped up a few years ago.

I just want the Last Guardian with Ueda was still creative director. I feel Sony partially botched The Last Guardian by a lack of support and showing it too early. I have no predictions for 2013 only hopes and I know surprises in the fall

DOMination-4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

If he's still in charge and its for ps4 we still won't see it for years as this guy will want to redo the game from scratch and make it "perfection".

I know he's made two masterpieces and tlg will be great too but Sony wasted too much time and money on this guy. A whole generation has passed and seemingly has nothing to show other than a trailer they were forced to because of the leak by psls.

jukins4121d ago

it wasnt the lack of support it was a large amount of technical hurdles kinda brought on by ueda himself. Like other legendary japanese developers they usually bite off more than they can chew at the start, because of high ambitions, but once reality sits in and they get the ball rolling only goodness can come.

while we've had to wait ages for this game I'm sure gamers will be happy with the final product whether its ps3 or ps4 (orbis lol)

ElectricKaibutsu4121d ago

I thought Ueda left the project. No? I'll be happy if he's still there.

jukins4121d ago

yea he left the company but agreed finish this game.

TrendyGamers4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

2013 has the potential to be a gigantic year.

Timesplitter144121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

but what good are predictions?

GribbleGrunger4121d ago (Edited 4121d ago )

You'll get an answer to that next year.

cedaridge4121d ago

I do at this point prefer "The Last Guardian" be on the PS4. I'm just ready to hear the words that ps4 & xbox 720 is reality not just rumor.

Starfield Highlights a Major Problem With the AAA Game Industry

Video games -- particularly AAA video games -- have become too expensive to make. The intel from every fly on the wall in every investor's room is there is an increasing level of caution about spending hundreds of millions just to release a single video game. And you can't blame them. Many AAA game budgets mean that you can print hundreds of millions in revenue, and not even turn a profit. If you are an investor, quite frankly, there are many easier ways to make a buck. AAA games have always been expensive to make though, but when did we go from expensive, to too expensive? A decade ago, AAA games were still expensive to make, but fears of "sustainability" didn't keep every CEO up at night. Consumer expectations and demands no doubt play a role in this, but more and more games are also revealing obvious signs of resource mismanagement, evident by development teams and budgets spiraling out of control with sometimes nothing substantial to show for it.

It’s a question that I’ve pondered myself too. How are these developers spending this much money? Also, like the article stated, I cannot tell where it’s even going. Perfect example was used with Starfield and Spiderman 2.

They claim they have to increase prices due to development costs exploding. Okay? Well, I’m finding myself spending less and less money on games than before due to the quality actually going down. With a few recent exceptions games are getting worse.

I thought these newer consoles and game engines are easier-therefore-cheaper to make games than previous ones. What has happened? Was it over hiring after the pandemic, like other tech companies?

MrBaskerville24m ago(Edited 19m ago)

Costs quite a bit to maintain a team of 700+ employees. Which is what it takes to create something with state of the art fidelity and scope. Just imagine how many 3D artists you'd need to create the plethora of 3D objects in a AAA game. There's so much stuff and each asset takes time and effort.

That's atleast one of the things that didn't get easier. Also coding all the systems and creating all the character models with animations and everything. Animations alone is a huge thing because games are expected to be so detailed.

Back in the day a God of War type game was a 12 hour adventure with small levels, now it has to be this 40+ hours of stuff. Obviously it didn't have to be this way of AAA publishers hadn't convinced themselves that it's an arms race. Games probably didn't need to be this bloated and they probably didn't need to be cutting edge in fidelity.

franwex3m ago(Edited 0m ago)

Starfield’s animation and character models look like they are from Oblivion, a game that came out about 20 years ago. I cannot tell the difference between Spider-Man 2 and the first one at first glance. It’s been a joke in some YouTube channels.

Seven hundred people for 1 game? Make 7 games with 100 people instead. I think recent games have proven that it’s okay to have AA games, such as Hell Divers 2.

I guess I’m a bit jaded with the industry and where things are headed. Solutions seem obvious and easy, but maybe they aren’t.

raWfodog15m ago

I believe that it is due to this unsustainable rise in production costs that more and more companies are looking to AI tools to help ‘lower’ costs.
