Five things in gaming that sounded cool but ended up sucking

GameZone writes, "Have you ever wished that you could sit in on your favorite game’s development meeting months, even years, before it ever hit store shelves? Hearing producers, designers, and artists toss around ideas that would be transported from paper to digital media, and eventually boxed on a compact disc for the world to see – simply put, it has to be an amazing process. But what happens when some of those ideas go wrong? When a grand idea turns south when players finally get their hands on it? It’s happened hundreds of times in gaming, and we’ve compiled a list of our five favorite things in gaming that sounded cool but ended up, well, sucking."

Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, DmC, and RE6.

Hicken4134d ago

Since your list contains games that aren't even out, it obviously can't be taken seriously.

I'd agree on RE6, as it's a Resident Evil in name only.

DmC is shaping up to be the same, but it still looks like it'll be decent. Just... not DMC.

Lightning Returns, as previously stated, isn't out yet, so it's unclear as to whether or not it will suck. Of course, there's obvious bias against this game.

XIII-2 is okay. Nothing really to write home about. Yeah, yeah: that's not the response to have to a Final Fantasy, but it's not like every other FF has been crap; one or two that people don't really care for should be acceptable. SHOULD be.

Don't care what anyone says, I really enjoyed XIII. I particularly liked the dynamics created by splitting the party up into pairs of contrasting characters. The Sazh/Vanille section is my favorite part. I didn't mind the linearity, though a little more exploration of Pulse would have been nice. Overall, though, a much better game than people give it credit for.

And no, I'm not a "new" FF player.

Oh, well. Guess I should be used to that response by now.

Quite honestly, you "taking it seriously" hasn't even entered into my thought processes as being something that I care about, or as being necessary for the validity of my list.

"Lightning Returns, as previously stated, isn't out yet, so it's unclear as to whether or not it will suck. Of course, there's obvious bias against this game."

Given the degree of fail that the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy has been thus far, the attitude of the director in where he wants to take Final Fantasy, and comparing it to previous FF games, the margin of error that exists that could counter the statement that Lightning Returns sucks and will suck is quite low. Even from the trailer we can see that it's nothing really new and that SE is continuing to try and shove Lightning down our throats as the new Mascot of Final Fantasy.

"XIII-2 is okay. Nothing really to write home about. Yeah, yeah: that's not the response to have to a Final Fantasy, but it's not like every other FF has been crap; one or two that people don't really care for should be acceptable. SHOULD be."

The difference being that FFXIII-2 was a sequel no one asked for, exists due to all the cuts made from the first game that was terrible, and is a metaphorical polished turd, but ok.

"Don't care what anyone says, I really enjoyed XIII. I particularly liked the dynamics created by splitting the party up into pairs of contrasting characters. The Sazh/Vanille section is my favorite part. I didn't mind the linearity, though a little more exploration of Pulse would have been nice. Overall, though, a much better game than people give it credit for."

Not really. For starters, even though many FF games are "linear" in the beginning, that is effectively hidden by the presence of lively NPC's and houses to enter giving a sense of exploration even when you can't do much. The characters in the game were just awful. Sazh was only good because he was the least awful of the group but still forgettable. If you like being forced to go in a straight line, that's your choice, but it's still poor game design built on Toriyama's desire to make FF more like a shooter. And no, it's not a much better game than people give it credit for. When the general belief on the game is that it sucks, reflected in the sales of its sequel due to a loss of faith, you can pretty much legitimately say it's a terrible excuse of a Final Fantasy game.

"And no, I'm not a "new" FF player."

Guess it depends on what you mean by "new." If you like the linearity of FFXIII, I don't see how you could have played games like FFI or FFIV and enjoyed them. But hey, maybe your taste in FF games has devolved over the years.

Kinect never sounded cool. You kinda have to expect the first gen of tech like that to be disappointing. Kinect 2 should be interesting, though. More precise tracking and all.

Edit: Jeez I just thought of something. If next gen is focusing on Omni VR tech and all that what if we can scan ourselves with Kinect and make a virtual 3D copy..? Whenever you put your glasses on you could be with a twin. Or your girlfriend, or whatever. Obviously they wouldn't copy voice patterns, precise body language and all that. But still, a 3d copy of you... I hope they do that, it'd be quite neat.

BackBreaker:

That game is one huge tech demo for the Euphoria engine and sports games. It works well and feels more real than Madden could ever. But it has no franchises and lacks all the other features a football should have. They need to take the physics and implement it into future Madden titles.

Fable II - A Fantasy Series at Peak Performance

Fable II launched back in 2008 and remains the best the series has offered. Ahead of the series comeback, it's time to look at the classic.

They gotta bring back those gargoyles!

Dudeson301d ago

I'd love to play it again, this time on pc though. Forever waiting on that pc port.

Loved this game, oh and i always saved my dog at the end, hope the new Fable has a animal companion.

Fable 2 was the best inthe series. Peter waaaaaaay over promised with fable 1 and it was good but disappointing. He didn't go crazy eith hype for the second game and it was surprisingly awesome. Then he ran his mouth promoting 3 and it was the worst of the 3.

cthulhucultist301d ago

Funny story: Fable 3 had a funny way of keeping the promises you made in the first half of the game and having enough money to defeat the darkness.

You only had to collect enough money to buy 2 stores in a busy market district. You then raise the prices to maximum and you turn xbox 360 internal clock 99 or more years ahead.

The next time you load the game, all the rents from the 99 years are collected immediately.

But yes I agree that 3 was the weakest of the three.

Demetrius300d ago

I only got to play it once 😩 I'm so tempted to buy a Xbox 360 slim but planning on getting the series x soon since I got a PS5 in February Im ready to get saints row 1&2 back, GTA 4, fable 2, but I also want to play infamous 1&2 again Sony screwed us over with the stream only for saints row 2 and other gems smh

When will you decommission this new one? I’m only asking so I can be happier by not buying it at full price.

The dog Chorizo from FAR CRY 6 has wheelchair legs, so is hardly a decommissioned pet. In fact very useful for digging up dirt.

Historic Eras that Video Games Need to Explore

Xfire writes "Worldbuilding is a crucial part of any story. It's not an easy task to create a believable setting with its own set of rules, customs, traditions and political affiliations and then weave a story into the said setting. Luckily, storytellers and video game writers don't always need to create complex settings when we've got history books as thick as Big Chungus.

Historical eras make a fabulous setting for video games. They've already got the world-building nailed, complete with their own set of rules, customs, traditions and political affiliations. Honestly, I don't think I need to justify the fact that historical eras make an amazing setting for video games. If you don't believe me, just go ahead and play the Ghost of Tsushima or any of the Assassin's Creed games."

The first crusade would be pretty sweet. I’d probably enjoy any of those on your list if they were done respectfully. Like not some dork in Portland making a Russian Revolution game.

Benin Empire, Far East, Central America. Games are pretty biased toward Europe, North America, and the Middle East. There is a very big world out there.
