Do hardware gimmicks matter?

GameSpot- The Wii U is nothing if not flexible. Its compatibility with a wide assortment of controllers gives developers the freedom to create almost any game they have rattling around in their imaginations. With a touch screen nestled comfortably between an array of buttons and sticks, the included GamePad seamlessly melds traditional inputs with the ever-popular tablets.

And if the game you want to create doesn't mesh with Nintendo's latest innovation, you're free to use the last-generation motion-and-pointing Wii Remote or the bells-and-whistles-free Pro Controller. And yet, Borderlands 2 is still not coming to the Wii U, and it's because of the fancy controller that's the core of the system.

No, but that doesn't stop them from happening. Sadly.

well ya cant evolve tech using the same material for generations into the future something has got to change about the way things are eventually

No. Gimmicks get over-hyped as being the greatest thing since porn but once you actually try them the fun lasts momentary and then it wears off and it just sits there collecting dust, just like every Wii, PS Move and Kinect in existence.

The "gimmicks" matter, but I think the writer (didn't finish since it was running one...) didn't really get the point. If you release an updated version for another console, you got to offer something that makes people want it. If Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge added nothing, why would I pay $60 + buy a Wii U, when I can simply purchase the game for less on my current console. Naturally they don't want to add exclusive content to the Wii U (since they probably won't make it back), so they do the logical thing and just skip it. If we see a Borderlands 3, then we will most likely see it on the Wii U, since the "features" won't matter as much.

As far as the actual question goes, I think gimmicks are actually important. Sure they're not the most useful features in the world, but they can make 1 choice better than another. Like I can use the Gamepad to play without looking at my TV. This is great if I want to watch something on TV or just don't want to look at my TV. Motion can also be a fantastic thing if implemented correctly, which is why lightgun games are far more fun with the gun, than using a controller. Ultimately it's up to the developer to make use of these things and do it correctly. Plenty of companies just like to market that they implemented everything, like the Vita / 3DS / Wii U / Xbox have a checklist to fill. Not every game needs ____ feature, but if people love the characters, then a trivial avatar reward will go far. Just like touch mechanics can be fantastic if done right, like we see in Dokuro and Ragnarok Odyssey.

Borderlands 3 probably won't hit til the PS4 and Xbox3 arrive so it'll likely be forced to skip the Wii U.

Gimmicks are fine as long as they are optional.

Well, if developers/publishers took the time and actually made a game from the game up that utilized the technology properly - then I see no reason why we can't have an amazing game or two (whether it's the Wii, Kinect or Move).

The problem is that most developers just seem to tack on (rather crudely) these motion control schemes onto an already fully functioning game that TBH doesn't require it.
