Dishonored Proves Gambling on Original IP Can Still Pay Off

1up - Listen to what many industry executives have to say, and you'd be led to believe original intellectual property doesn't sell well late in a console cycle. The time to introduce a new IP supposedly comes when new consoles are launched; once those systems have been around for years, that's when the focus shifts to existing properties. This is something that has never made a lot of sense to many people, and the performance of Dishonored isn't about to do anything to convince those people that executives have it right.

I think it goes beyond the fact that Dishonored is unique, or it has an interesting setting, or that the stealth genre isn't very crowded, etc.

I think it has to do with the simple fact that Dishonored is an incredibly well-made game. The amount of polish and depth and freedom is insane. It's the game that Deus Ex and Bioshock SHOULD have been. Now that gamers have been turned on to this sub-genre of first-person games (via Bioshock and DE), I think a ton of gamers are trying this game and realizing just how well-done it is.

If publishers/developers didn't gamble on original IPs then we wouldn't get Uncharted, Gears of War, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Marvel Vs. Capcom, E.T., Lego games, LoL, Diablo, WoW, Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, Hitman, Killzone, Dead Space, Resident Evil, Too Human, Haze, Assassin's Creed, InFamous, Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, Bioshock, Ratchet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Sly, Halo, Fat Princess...................... ............................... ...........

The Magic of 'Dishonored’s' Blink

It’s a shame, really, that so few games have “borrowed” Dishonored’s Blink – in the right hands, such a power could be game-changing.

It felt kinda cheap to me… both in terms as a tactic, and game design

There was a small game called Aragami that “borrowed” the blink, that was a good game.

Unfortunately I heard the sequel wasn’t good so I stayed away from trying it out.

The sequel changed some of the mechanics from the first game but it was still a very polished and enjoyable experience. You should definitely give it a shot sometime. The game's currently on sale on Steam

Okay thanks for the heads up, will look out for it being on sale one day.

I really did like the first and played it back to back as soon as I finished the first play through.
