I couldn't find the link but insomniac already said resistance 2 was in alpha and the title was recently copyrighted. Insomniac has kept a 1 game a year pace for 6-7 years now, so there is little reason to believe they would break trend at this point.

Don't pretend for a second that M$ didn't do everything in its power to sell 360's too. There was a deal when Halo 3 came out at best buy that basically gave you a 360 & Halo 3 w/ the purchase of an HDTV. Also, blu ray lenses are expensive. You probably don't remember this, but when I bought my launch PS2 I spent over $400 on it and that was 7 years ago. The reason I could justify it was the inclusion of a DVD player (which weren't exactly cheap at the time). The reason I can justify my PS3 purchase is being able to watch beautiful 1080p movies as well as beautiful games. Once they get the cost of the blu lenses down the PS3's price will fall dramatically, same thing that happened w/ the PS2. Personally, I wonder how the 360 is so expesive since it's components are not that much more expensive than the original xbox.

Gran Tourismo, Socom 4, God of War 3, Wipeout (not the PSN title),twisted metal (08/09), tekken 6.

+MGs4 and FFXIII and versus. and new Kingdom Hearts.

How many of these lists do we need? The whole article is riddled with grammatical errors and the author seems pretty set on Lair. The only things valid on that list are points 5, 8, and possibly 2. The PR team have slowed down on shooting themselves in the foot. We all know the list of games that are coming out next year and there are some real gems other than MGS4 and FFXIII.

They've lowered the price of dev kits and started sharing knowledge and helping them get things together, this is evident from UT3's release. I too await Home but if the functionality from the trailers isn't up to par, then please don't release until it is. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they did otherwise, because they'd be instantly lambasted for releasing a shoddy product that didn't deliver at least the core features. I'm pretty sure others share that sentiment.

2008 is just going to rock anyway, I hope this is the last list we see.

1: "Release a game with little to no bugs, playable etc"? Is this a joke? Shouldn't this be the goal of every single software developer? Every console suffers from this.

2. I think the too many sku's complaint is ridiculous. The 20gb was dropped because it wasn't really selling. The 60gb was dropped because it was replaced with a larger harddrive, and the 40gb was a decision to hit $400 before the holiday season.

Having different SKUs and reacting to the market in that sense is exactly what Sony should have done, and Pachter, Croal etc, have stated this. His reasoning that customers will hold off purchases is incorrect.

The worst offender is Microsoft, Arcade, Core, Premium, Elite. The core has been replaced by the arcade. At one time there were non-hdmi and hdmi versions of the premium sitting on the shelf. There's also a Halo package SKU. Falcon chipsets are also a guessing a game for many individuals. I'm sure people are still searching for certain manufacturing dates.

3. "Exclusives" Sony has the largest exclusive line up for 2008 out of the three consoles. Regardless, Sony doesn't want to buy exclusives because it's huge money out of pocket with little immediate return. There's no guarantee that if you pay several million for a game, that you'll ever recover that loss, even over the lifespan of the system. Microsoft has less qualms about this because they're building a brand, and they know that there's going to be huge losses associated with that. They're just being bankrolled by their parent company so that they can hopefully create a larger market share for the next generation after this when they will presumably be more successful.

I'm becoming a little too long winded, but I think it's fair to say that this blog post is, well, just bad.

I'd say there's only 3 things Sony needs to do for 2008:

1. Continue strengthening ties with third party software developers.
2. Re-design PSN asap with better friend-tracking, in-game chat, etc a' la XBL.
3. Maintain competitive in price point.

Sony is not going to catch up in a yr. The would have to sell a hell of alot of consoles to do that. Sony prally will catch up but it will be more of 2-3 yrs down the line. Xbox 360 had a yr/6mill head start. Sony will NEVER catch the WII but who cares. To me, the WII is more for a family console which is why it sells so much. You will never see games like GOW, Halo, Uncharted, and COD4 on the WII. If you do, it will be tuned down.

@Below: I have not tried to imply that the 360 version will be superior. What I have tried to imply is that GTAIV is going to be the first real benchmark between the two consoles. COD4 was pretty much a dead heat. However, its long been touted that GTAIV could really benefit from Blu-Ray or might the PS3 version be held back by limitations of the DVD format????

If a title like GTAIV is pretty much identical on both platforms then it only makes it harder for gamers to decide on which console to buy. I am hoping that GTAIV really shines on one platform or another...not both.

Oh yes, finally, I didn;t even mention DLC so why did everybody assume thats what I was using to differentiate the two versions? I don't care about DLC at this stage. If the PS3 version really outperforms the 360 version then the DLC will mean squat. However, if the two versions are identical then DLC will help to differentiate the 360 from the PS3 version.

I think DLC is overrated, as theres always been enough game there on it's own to keep me coming back. If you look at it it makes sense. It was 20/60 first, and they upped each by 20 Gigs to 40/80. If you go back and watch the original E3 presentation and read the reports from around that time, you'll find that this was planned all along. They specifically talked about releasing new versions with upgraded specs. In fact, I'm almost sure you remember it, XBox fans flipped a sh!T saying that Sony would release new SKU's with overclocked Cell and more memory, when all Kaz meant was new HDDs.

I think Sony has to keep shuffling the SKUs, releasing new colors, and so on in order to keep the momentum going. There has never been a point where you could say "oh I got screwed for not waiting", especially since you can upgrade with any 3rd party HDD.

Also, most of the buggy games are 3rd party, not 1st party. Lair isn't a buggy game, it's just plain... bad, or at least the control scheme is irritating. It was intended to be like that, it's not a bug.

I doubt Bioshock and Ace Combat will be exclusives. They're probably just timed exclusives.

Point 4 is already a reality (COD4), point 5 to 8 are becoming a reality, and point 9 is subjective.

According to the article 7.7 Million for Ps3, 14 something million 360's, so that is pretty sweet for a more expensive console. Everyone thinks that it is going to catch up next year is naive. I like the fact that my ps3 will produce new innovative games for the next 7 years or so. I didn't come out on in December because that was a hard month to compete with because of too many games going back and forth couldn't tell who would get noticed. Got pushed back to June from March for one reason only the release of Killzone 2.

Unreal Tournament 3 originally was supposed to come out in November but was delayed to December why?
Because Epic wanted to add more mods to the game (aka more online matches and connectivity).
It was good when they waited because in return the PS3 version compared to the other formats has an open network which makes it better for online which is what they wanted.
Just because a game gets delayed doesn't mean it's a bad thing only an improvement.
Sony still sales with 9 million and the year isn't even over yet so how can people say they're doing bad.
360 sold 6.5 million it's 1st year compared to 9.5 million to PS3 which equals 3 million more units sold plus if you add up PSP and PS2 sales your talking big numbers.

Sony has reached almost 9m in year one with the PS3 IMO its way on target to "catching up". The most amazing thing is they did it without having a line-up thats nowhere nearly remotely promising as their 2008 offerings. I literally went from wondering was the PS3 just an over priced POS and at times laughed and joked about the dismal state that the PS3 was in earlier this year, to feeling like it was THE must have console FOR ME.

It wasnt til HS came along that i begain to take a more serious look at it and then came Uncharted and I begin to really feel like I had to get one because it really felt like I was missing something sweet and so I did and I love it.

Its an amazing console from the psp esque interface to the quality of Blu Ray player, the ability to easily to swap out your standardized hard drive and throw in a 200gig'er if need be, and hey! did I mention that the latest games games like Uncharted and R&C are the best looking and most visually crisp games you can buy on any console. This is no longer subjective btw, its the truth.

Sony has finally pulled its head out of its ass and pulled it together. They have market appeal to every region which is a big plus and after 2 year if they havent surpassed Wii or 360 they are sure to be close on their heels. MS has possibly come close to tapping its market as Halo3 and Mass Effect were its Flagship franchises. Gears 2 will be a strong force to be reckoned with and rightfully so. Gears is one of my all times favorites and it saddened me that it didnt take the Flagship position from Halo because its just a better game IMO.

I'm happy to see that we all have something to look forward to and I'm glad I sat a PS3 beside my Wii and I will be happy when gear gears 2 shows up, I may get the core for that alone if it does'nt go multi-plat.

Sony however has the best looking line up for 08 and for me that includes not only the games everyone are talking about(MGS4, FF13, GT, GOW etc) but also games like Wipeout HD and Hot Shots Golf5.

I'm true to my roots so if theres anyone I'd like to see win this war it would surely be Nintendo. Thats my native era and I wont ever forget what a MAJOR influence the big N has had on the gaming industry. There will NEVER be a gaming Co. with a richer history than that of Nintendo's. Believe!

I agree, the behavior you describe is fairly annoying. But then again, you yourself do make claims et cetera that can't really be checked or even considered to be factual. You say that you only consider the facts, but earlier you also stated that everyone "knows" that the PS3 will end up last in the current console war, something I do hope you know for a fact isn't really decided yet.

Personally, I work with statistics and numbers for a living, so I know how to read them properly, in most cases. Pure numbers aren't usually that interesting, you have to interprete them correctly. For example, people might rave over a product that is "85% fat free", but that means that the product contains 15% fat, which is high.

Asking anyone to interprete statistics is sort of like asking anyone to build a bridge, it's not very realistic, because people simply can't do it. Statisticians handle the statistics, and engineers build bridges. That is why it always seems funny to me when people tro to compare sales figures between a system that has been out for two years and a system that has been out for one.

So, Zhuk, my tip to you is first of all to learn how to read numbers properly, don't exaggerate the ability to predict future events from them and most of all; learn from history. Unless you do that, the "truths" you claim to provide others with aren't really worth much of anything.

Sony Doesn't need to buy third party exclusive because they own alot of 1st party Studios and already have a ton of exclusives. as far as i can tell from looking at the end of this year, and towards next year, Sony has addressed, *IS addressing these concerns.

um, Heavenly Sword isn't buggy (ie, no random crashes and freezes, and only minor slowdown, though i've only encountered slowdown once or twice during my playthrough). the article sites Lair (of course, who doesn't when trying to downplay the PS3?), but neglects to mention quality titles like Uncharted, Folklore, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, and Virtua Fighter 5. all top notch games, with practically non-existant bugs/glitches, framerate issues, etc.

well, there are only two official SKUs now, the 40gig and the 80gig. happy now? outside of PS2 compatibility and memory stick readers, both SKUs are identical (ie, they both have wireless networking, hard drives, USB ports, Blu Ray players, Cell processor, etc). if PS2 compatibility is such an issue, get a PS2, or keep the one you already have. i don't see the problem here.

i fail to see this guys point concerning lack of exclusives. there are plenty, with plenty more yet to be announced by Sony and it's first, second, and 3rd party studios.

earlier this year, Sony released the Playstation Edge development tools to all first, second, and 3rd party developers. not only that, but companies like Naughty Dog (of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fame), and Insomniac (of Resistance and Ratchet and Clank fame), have been making their knowledge and technologies available to all interested parties (Insomniac even has documents for download highlighting their techniques). not only that, but most games this generation run on the Unreal Engine 3 (ie, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, and numerous others). for those that don't know, a little game called Unreal Tournament 3, made by the folks that not only *CREATED Gears of War, but the Unreal Engine 3, has been released on the Playstation 3, and is proving that any kinks concerning Unreal Engine 3 on the PS3 have been ironed out (at least by developers who know what the hell they're doing). these strides will ease PS3 development for those who are using Unreal Engine 3.

"5.) Advertising is key"

i guess this guy hasn't been watching television lately, because the PS3 "Universe" ads have not only been highlighting all the numerous features of the PS3 for the uninformed, but they have been going over rather well with the populace, as evidenced by the continued growth in sales for the console. not to mention the ads are running *CONSTANTLY.

"6.) Innovation in games"

Eye of Judgement, Little Big Planet, Echocrome, Eye Toy games, Patapon, flOw, and more have shown that Sony's head are in innovation as well as casual and hardcore gaming. oh yeah, have you heard about that rather innovative new Eye Toy game, where the camera *ANALYZES your 2D drawings, then turns it into a controllable character on the screen that you can manipulate with the SIXAXIS? i'm guessing the writer of this article *HASN'T.

"7.) Release Home!"

can't argue with that, but it's *COMING. i'd much rather have a *FUNCTIONAL network service than a buggy mess (and a lot of the Home Beta users have been saying that kinks and features still need to be worked out and added). Home will most certainly be ready in 2008, but when, i don't know. when it *DOES hit, however, it will be functional and full-featured.

"8.) Fix-up and polish the PlayStation Network!"

this is almost an extension of the Home issue, as most of the PSN will be tied into that service.

as for the Playstation Store, yes, and overhaul would be nice, and i'd also love to see it done like the Cross Media Bar, but what *IS there for now isn't a complete mess or disaster. i guess you get used to it after a while, because i have no problem, say, clicking on the link labeled "Videos" and, lo and behold, there are videos there to download, separated by category (Game Videos, Theatrical Trailers, and Blu Ray trailers). it's so hard, i know, but i manage.

i've also seen the artwork done by fans concerning the PS Store, and i certainly wouldn't complain if Sony adapted that for the store.

as for the PSN label on the box, well, i don't know exactly how necessary that is. on the Warhawk box, for example, it says "Playstation Network Exclusive" and "Multiplayer Only". it also has a label saying "Requires Free Playstation Network Registration."

there are also notices on the back of the boxes, below the screenshots, declaring HDD space requirements, network requirements (ie, broadband connection), and PSN requirements.

i know it's hard to flip a box over and look at the back of it for necessary information, but, you know, thems the breaks.

in either case, this guys list seems like it was written circa E3 2006, when everybody was sh*tting in Sony's cereal about the PS3.

next year looks to continue what Sony has been doing all this year, and that's cleaning up the PS3's image with price drops, updates that improve functionality (ie, Divx support, Blu Ray 1.1 support, etc), and releasing quality software (ie, Uncharted, Ratchet, and Unreal, etc). this guy needs to keep up with the times, and quit spouting off the same tired arguments we've been hearing all year long. most of them don't apply (with the only exceptions being issues like Home, and some network functionality like XMB access and cross game chat; that stuff will come soon enough).

What Sony needs to do, for me at least, is make the psn better. I just hate the psn. Everytime I turn on the xbox the first thing I do is see what my friends are playing and browsing the marketplace. When I turn on the ps3 I never do that. They need to step up the psn. Also, they need a good fps online with matchmaking. If killzone dont have matchmaking, it will suck for me, at least online.

Here's what Sony really needs to do:

1) Get a time machine and send their chief engineers back in time a few years so they can stop the insanity before it starts.

2) Put a normal CPU in place of the Cell. The Cell is a disaster for everything, but Folding at Home. Developers would get much more from a normal multi-core Intel or AMD chip with much less work.

3) Don't use Blu-Ray. Blu-ray caused the PS3 to be TWICE as expensive and delayed the release a year. Require at least a 40 gig hard disk, so the rare game that won't fit on one disk can have a second DVD to load onto the hard disk. Gamers don't give a damn about Blu-Ray especially when it doubles the cost of the console. Proof: Less than 4% of 360 owners have bought the HD DVD add-on.

4) Use at least twice as much RAM memory and make it dual ported. The current PS3 is not "future proof" because of the kick in the nuts developers take from the tiny memory that isn't dual ported.

5) Get some help creating the development system from a third party who knows what they are doing. Sony is a hardware company. They are in over their heads here. Of course not having the cell and using more memory would automatically make the development system much better and let the PS3 hit the ground running with much better games and way fewer delays.

6) Because of 1-5 on this list, the PS3 would release a year sooner, at half the price, with a better tuned machine, and more/better software from day one. This would prevent MS from jumping out to the huge lead in both system sales and AAA quality games.

Sony has been lucky because of the explosion in the game market and the blind loyalty of fanbois. Compared to just a few years ago, there is actually room for three systems in this market. Otherwise the PS3 would already be dead as fried chicken.

Hey folks... let's take a step back here.

There's no need for all this personal attacking, and false claims/judgments... this thread isn't about any of that, right?

I think it's just tough for extremely pro-Sony/PS3 folk to absorb the fact that the 360's a better gaming machine, when it comes to game features, innovation, graphics, and online community... not to mention, it's selling a boat load more than PS3... and selling more games than both the Wii and PS3 combined.

Tough pill to swallow for any strong PS3 fan... but those are the facts, whether they like it or no

Article number 3 is very correct, every time I turn on my tv I see at least like 5-7 commercials of the 360 or something 360 related, ths is what Sony needs to do advertise there product, yea sure that the commercials are better this year compared to last years *Thinks of the baby commercial and stutters* but they need to match or yet go beyond in what Microsoft is doing in th advertising compartment. Especially with the big hit titles like MGS4, FF13, GT5 they need to practially BOAST that these titles are on the ps3.

You're right about the advertising. Every time I turn on the TV I see a 360 commercial. I see some 360s and (exclusive) games falling out of the sky to the most undeserving people. With more recognizable exclusives being released this year I hope we'll see better adverts for the PS3.

are declaring the 360 has won this gen. How many consoles has it sold? 14-15 Mil? Last time I checked the console that won last gen sold 120 Mil+. This is like declaring a winner of a marathon after 3 miles. No one knows who is going to win. 360 has cheaper hardware, but to get the full experience don't kid yourself in thinking you'll spend less than a PS3. And while the PS3 had slow sales in the beginning I believe they did the customer a service by adding in a blu lense. It is a complete media hub in a box and no matter which sku you get you can plug it in to your TV, get your wireless up and w/in 15 min you can surf the web, watch blu ray movies or play one of many great PS3 games. Say what you will but if you want to watch HD movies and connect wirelessly on the 360 it's an extra $250. Personally I like the all in one price.

1) Get rid of the standard hard drive, to fracture the user base and not allow developers to have a standard way to cache data.
2) Adopt a smaller media format, like maybe DVD or even CDROM, to give developers less resources to work with, and give gamers less interesting games.
3) Sell an ugly external add-on unit, with another ugly power brick and more cables, for playing HD movies only, so they can charge more for another peripheral.
4) Substitute the all-digital signal path with a kludgey A/D HDMI output. Better yet, do away with real HDTV capability altogether.
5) Dumb down the system design with a slower memory architecture and a more "conventional" cpu.
6) Sock their customers with ongoing charges for online gaming, and micro-charge the heck out of them for every piece of trivial content, like XMB themes.
7) Redesign the system to allow for only proprietary, expensive add-ons like the HDD, memory cards, etc.
8) Concentrate almost completely on a single gaming genre, like shooters (or even a single cartoony franchise), and stop wasting time trying to develop diverse concepts like Eye of Judgment, Echochrome, Singstar, web browsing, Linux, etc.
9) Make the system out of cheaper, noisier, disc-damaging, failure-prone components, to lower production costs, and allow them to sell the same system multiple times to the same people.

Oops, I've gone over 8 already. But these would go a long way toward "catching up" to the competition. That is, if the goal is to sell more/cheaper/less-capable systems, and give gamers lesser games and far less value for the money. Some gamers, however, may be more concerned with having the most capable entertainment system, and the most fun and diverse games to choose from, than they are with how many total units the platform sells. It's quite the quandary.

Most ps2 users are loyal to their brand so a large majority wouldn't even switch if the 360 shat diamonds.

Also the same majority could have defected over the the 1st xbox but they didn't so what would make them wanna switch when they know a PS3 is inevitable.

Another large majority of gamers are limited to what their parents decide to buy them, they may want a 360 or PS3 or Wii, but tight ass mum and dad are gonna buy them the cheap ass ps2 bundle and their GONNA LIKE IT. lol

Also there is the simple fact that Sony is a well established gaming giant and Microsoft is playing serious catch up. And most people will hedge their bets on the pedigree rather than the young upstart.

On the other hand, if you realy enjoy gaming and can afford your habit then I highly recommend burning your PS3 FTW flags and get out there and pick up a 360 and a Wii and have a blast.

Or are you guys not real gamers. I dont know how you can say that you are unless you experience what gaming has to offer through any medium

Its sad to see the first xbox user who never really got to use there system . When the ps2 user are done and there getting ready to pick up a new system what do you think most of them will buy ......seriously think about it...

PS3 has TOO MANY HUGE games coming out in 2008 it`s going to be hard for 360 to compete.

360 fans will talk about ALAN WAKE, which i`m not even sure it exists. LOL.

Casual gamers will say who`s Alan Wake at this point, and I for one don`t think its coming out till 2009 and who knows what it`ll be going up against by then.

The game that probaly has the most chance for 360 in 2008 is Splinter Cell and Fable2, and that just NOT enough.

By Xmas next year if that`s all 360 has going for it against GOW3/GT5/MGS4/FF13/LBP/KZ2 it`s in some serious trouble.

Also GOW3/GT5/MGS4/FF13/LBP/KZ2 are all completly different genres of games and that in itself is amazing considering their 2nd year games.
(which is why i love sony)

the Wii is having it`s time right now, but i`m not sure how much solid software they have coming in 2008 and that WILL effect the Wii sales eventually once the craze dies down, cause believe it or not it`s is a gaming machine.

psn does need some polishing but overall it works fine.

You gripe, moan and argue about the games more then you play them(your always on the counting boasting flame wars down each others throat.

MGS4, Little big Planet, Killzone and FFXIII come out, most of you will probably get no further then the third chapter. and if they don't score above 90% you will all be crying, crying and crying like a baby for mama's tit.

NOBODY, and xbox 360 is doing just fine in it's second, it's microsoft's second entry into the console market and could do little better in japan. But you can be a viable competitor or even win without japan(sega genesis, need i say more) the only reason they didn't win was they introduced the sega cd and 32x, that was their fault.

Microsoft has hardly any reason at all to shake in their boots. Sony is doing as good. Brand name is STRONG, very STRONG but microsoft made sure they got a headstart, so they could even the playing field and they have. It's already doing better then the first xbox given the playstation's monopoly and has a stronger hold on third party developers(square enix and namco making games) then xbox did.

The war is far from over, but i advise alot of you to actually go play these games out there and enjoy them for what they are. Instead of arguing nonsense.

Only an idiot would claim that either console is doomed in 2008. They are both pulling very impressive numbers. However, my reasoning is that, even if it hasn't already done it by that point, the PS3 will easily catch 360 sales when MS drops support for it at some point in 2010/2011 to release their next console. I know I'll be disagreed with, but I can't see DVD lasting too much farther into this gen. It will require things like reusing lots of textures, multiple discs, and heavy, heavy compression, all of which detract from the quality of a product. Games like iD's new Rage are already showing this limitation, as the Megatextures used in the game can easily take up to 4 GB for each large level. This is why it will be 2 DVDs on the 360 and a single Blu-Ray on the PS3. I know there will be people who claim that multiple discs is fine, and I agree, but only for some genres. For an RPG, a change in discs is standard, even accepted as a break in chapters, but think of a game like GTA. There's no way a game like that could be on multiple discs and work well. Either way, neither console is going anywhere for a good amount of time. Can't everyone just learn to get along and quit trying to seem bigger than they are over the internet? It was funny for a while, now it makes it painful to read comments on ANY game journalism website. For every intelligent comment, there are 10 or 20 completely ignorant fanboy comments from BOTH sides.

I hope both systems stay in business. I hate the Wii, it's too kid focused for me to get into. So we need the two adult consoles to fight each other so the consumer can get the best games.

Have you played Uncharted? There's no loading times in the entire game. You could start at the beginning and play through the entire game and not load once. And before the fanboys come in and try to say otherwise, Blu-Ray has a faster data transfer rate than a dual-layer DVD.

I dont think I have ever agreed with Nasim on anything yet I never would ever report him as spam or anything.
