Call of Duty Developer Speaks About Innovation and Constantly Raising the Bar

Gaming enthusiasts (otherwise known as jaded hardcore gamers) often criticize the Call of Duty series for annual releases that don’t feature many improvements or the sort of changes that you’d expect from a new entry of a franchise. - PSLS

I bought this piece of shit and I dont see any innovation or bar raising ! For me its even worse than any previous titles

aPerson4168d ago

And I guarantee you'll buy the next one too.

doctorstrange4168d ago

Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in.

Griffin48714168d ago

I won't. In fact, I never bought any of them.

Blastoise4168d ago (Edited 4168d ago )

No way is this game worse than MW3

Griffin48714168d ago

There all the same. It really doesn't matter.

FunkMacNasty4168d ago

dude, stop trolling. This may not be an "innovative" entry into the franchise or the FPS genre, but Treyarch at least tried some things to set it apart and make it different from the other 17 CoD games that came before it. You'd know that if you actually played the game.

Call of Duty Developer Speaks About Innovation and Constantly Raising the Bar"

Lmao this is a joke right? Anyway, run and gun with small choke points on linear maps... yeah that's innovation at its finest. lol

insertcoin4168d ago

It's to Treyarch's benefit if they innovate in ways that still count as innovation but are as minimal as possible. Of course, the players don't benefit this, but what do they care, as long as they can call it "innovation"?

burn1n9m4n4168d ago

To be fair, there are a lot of things that Treyarch improved and added in the multiplayer end of Call of Duty. The campaign also features branching paths and different endings based on actions taken. It's not much I'll admit, but it is a start.

vortis4168d ago

Speaking as a hardcore gamer...

I don't care anymore.

The thing is, the majority of the game just isn't fun. None of it is. It's trite and repetitive and boring.

They can talk all the innovation they want but the core of the game itself has been worn out to death.

It's like bringing out a year old pie and putting a new sugary topping on it with a fresh new cherry. Those new things are nice but it's still that same old pie underneath and it isn't good.

I'm that jaded core gamer the opening paragraph talks about and I've already moved on to other games. I'm having fun (a lot of it) with lesser known titles, indie games and stuff that actually pushes boundaries.

Casuals can have Call of Duty and its Hollywood set pieces. They got boring a long time ago.

burn1n9m4n4168d ago

I'm not saying that I like it. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I haven't played a Call of Duty game since MW2 exactly for the reasons you've outlined.

But old habits die hard, and it's hard to scrap a core design philosophy and start completely from scratch. At this point that would take new console hardware in order to offer up the opportunity to publishers and developers to reinvent themselves. Plus the two points that allow CoD to continue down this path of minimal (if any) innovation are the following: (1) Persistence in multiplayer is a fantastic development idea that has yet to be beaten or innovated upon itself. Which is why the multiplayer has remained largely unchanged. and (2) People will buy CoD regardless of its quality at this point due to preferences, esports...etc. Point being, why would Activision push Treyarch to innovate the single player or multiplayer for no real reason? They wouldn't which is why it's the same as it was years ago when they started at CoD4.

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty252d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w252d ago (Edited 252d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191252d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007252d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic251d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest251d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic249d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg252d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183252d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai252d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl251d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic251d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack251d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic251d ago (Edited 251d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730252d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69252d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor251d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69251d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
