GTA V censorship for Wii U risks

Alan Ng:

GTA V is now on the horizon and at the moment – it is only coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 unfortunately. Rockstar is refusing to confirm whether the game will be coming to PC or Wii U, but we’ve since learned earlier this week that these platforms are ‘now up for consideration’. Is there more to it though which is holding back the Wii U version specifically, such as censorship and Nintendo’s reluctance to bring a ‘controversial’ game to the company’s new console?

censoring out Manhunt because its depictions of violent or realistic killing and GTA are not even in the same league. GTA is always over the top nonsense. Madworld was an extremely gruesome game, and it had no problem being released on the Wii. In fact, with the Black and White nature of the game, it only caused the blood and carnage to stand out even more (since the red blood was the only color in the game).

GTA V would be perfectly fine on the Wii U. I am sure Rockstar could come up with some pretty cool ways to use the Gamepad. Gamers on the Wii U would rejoice and buy it, and Rockstar would get to line their pockets a little more. Win-Win.

I dont think it will happen.

All current-gen Rockstar games have always been CPU extensive games. Because of the high amount of physics going on. The weak CPU of the WiiU is just not able to do that. Plain and simple.

Every object in GTA 4 pretty much had Physics in them. Containers, people, cars, debris, chairs etc.

Some developers are struggling to get lots of AI on the screen because of the CPU. And we all know how much AI is going on on GTA..Combine that with physics and you have a problem.

yabhero4171d ago

I think you're exaggerating a lot. From what I've read the WiiU is weak but with some change in coding processes it's ok, not great but ok. There the the GPGPU which an handle some of the physics and AI

dennett3164171d ago

It only has a slightly slower CPU as compared to the 360, that's all. The chip is more modern and efficient, and when used in conjunction with the GPGPU (which is a programmable GPU and can be used to take some of the load off).
Developers working on launch games are struggling slightly because - and they admitted this themselves in regards to the devs of the Warriors Orochi - that they don't yet fully grasp the ins and outs of the Wii U's architecture.

All these claims of the Wii U lacking power in certain departments may be true to an extent, but they conveniently ignore all the other factors that determine performance (for example, the GPU and CPU being on the same chipset is very efficient as compared to either the 360 or PS3). Hard numbers are not the be all and end all, and a little common sense goes a long way.

Compare launch period 360 games with something like Halo 4 on the same hardware...that's the difference that getting to know the hardware can make. People seem to forget this bit of common sense when it comes to Nintendo.

Donnieboi4171d ago

@DoomeDx: Hush! Don't tell the truth. Nintendo fanboy's don't like it and will forever make excuses for the shortcomings of Nintendo. THAT's why Nintendo does the bare minimum it needs to do just to sell systems. Fanboys will keep making excuses for it's shortcomings anyway.

The "U" in Wii U stands for "Underwhelming"

Y_51504171d ago

Yeah I don't understand why they would censor it. The Wii U already has Zombie U and a couple of multiplats that has blood and such. This isn't the old days when Nintendo's version of Mortal Kombat didn't have blood.

Venoxn4g4171d ago

yea, dont forget that Ninja gaiden Wii U is most gory version too, with lots o blood and everything :) and Wii had No more heroes too (damn the Eu version of first one) :)

madcowz644169d ago

Ya but Madworld also had cartoon like graphics and obviously wasn't realistic. GTAV almost looks real and you can commit murder for absolutely no reason. That being said I do agree with you, they should put GTAV on the Wii U simply because they can integrate the new gamepad. Now brings up the question, can the Wii U's CPU handle GTAV? Doubtful.

I don't believe there's any danger of censorship if Rockstar brings it to the Wii U. Look at GTA: Chinatown wars, that was a DS exclusive(obviously it's no longer exclusive)and it had a whole side of it where you could run a drug dealing business. Also look at Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Nintendo published that game and it's more violent than ever before.

I believe Rockstar won't feel the need to censor themselves should they bring GTA V to the Wii U and I don't believe Nintendo will make them either.

Nes_Daze4171d ago

Meh...yes Nintendo has more kids(way more kids) in their userbase, but I see no reason why it would have censorship troubles, unless there are more soccer moms in their userbase than I thought.

dennett3164171d ago

I don't think they will...look at how wide the audience was for the Wii and it still played host to the likes of Madworld, various Resident Evil Titles, No More Heroes etc.
Nintendo have had a lot of gory games on their systems over the years - Turok 2, various Mortal Kombat games, Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness etc.

Wolfbiker4170d ago

Nintendo has a way younger user base yet the Miiverse and their fan base is more mature than any other.

Dovahkiin4171d ago

There are age ratings for a reason. Things don't need censoring.

josephayal4171d ago

If it doesn't come to PC I will not be buying it

chadboban4171d ago

Well considering that every other GTA game has come to PC (with the exception of the portable entries) I don't think a PC version will be that far off. We may just have to wait a bit for that version though.

grandv4171d ago

ahaaaaaaaaa u see that becous how companys games it get the Bring profits when the games out not just everybody buy thats games will be buy with wii u...but if it out in pc will will be buy new graphics card strong !!! i hop if u know what i mean!! but i not want to late about that !thx

More interested in money than giving fans what they want. Such a shame

CrimsonWing691d 13h ago

With the amount of money they generated, I just don’t understand the scrubbing of this. It would’ve been fantastic for fans.

Profchaos1d 11h ago

I really want to know who drove the decision to focus on multiplayer was it Rockstar or take two.

Because when online started taking off many of the studio leads began having falling outs and leading including a founder

Demetrius1d ago

Ikr mfs that greedy it's ridiculous

andy851d 10h ago

This makes me sad. Trevor was one of my favourite characters in gaming

Demetrius1d ago

One of the reason I believe once gta 6 release, most of us thoroughly play it, enjoy the world they crafted then after that no offline support, no dlc at all
