'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2' can’t save the Playstation Vita

Lance Roth:

Activision’s "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" released Tueday for the top home consoles and the PC. A version of it has also been released for Sony’s Playstation Vita but, as popular as "Call of Duty" is, it is unlikely to save the handheld console. The writing is already on the wall. Last month, I went to IndieCade here in Los Angeles to see what was new and fresh in gaming and while there were some really cool new concepts, entertainment behemoth Sony’s tent dwarfed the Indie games showcase. Granted, the IndieCade needs sponsors and Sony wasn’t showing off their huge blockbuster games but instead they were highlighting smaller downloadable games for the Playstation 3 and the struggling Vita. That raises a question. Are smaller, simpler indie games really the salvation for the Playstation Vita or handheld gaming in general?

That's not Blops II on the Vita, it's Declassified different games.

LOGICWINS4172d ago

LOL ignorant journalist claiming he can't find any new games on Vita.

Hufandpuf4172d ago

"The Vita on the other hand is a beautiful and powerful piece of hardware with nothing to play on it. Sure, I could download a bunch of older games but wasn’t the point of buying it, to be able to play the really cool new games?"

Diver4172d ago

and ridiculous nonstop cheap articles from the examiner can't save game journalism.

black ops declass > anything published by the examiner

MaximusPrime4172d ago

Why does PS vita needs saving? Still too early... It is doing fine. It will do well in couple of years. Look at how PS3 and PSP doing... Struggled at the start, tons of games and consoles outselling years later.

Disagreers are usually Americans and hardcore Xbox owners.

Go on then disagree.

"Disagreers are usually Americans"

Wow! What a load of BS! Please take your xenophobia somewhere else. You should be ashamed of yourself, really ignorant statement and it speaks loads of the type of person you are.

Voted down for immature.

G20WLY4172d ago

I agree with you, but in a sensible and moderate way...

It's a shame there is no facility to mark a post as 'oversensitive'! :P

As for the article, a journalist should know that there are plenty of great games on Vita, many of which you can't get anywhere else. This level of ignorance is unacceptable for someone supposedly 'in the industry'.

LOGICWINS4172d ago

Americans? How'd you come to that conclusion?

ronin4life4172d ago

The only thing wrong with that logic is the psp and ps3 did leaps and bounds better than the vita.
The dreamcast had done better by this point in japan.

People need to stop comparing by proxy alone and actually look at the hard numbers as well. The vita is not in the exact same situation the psp, ps3 or 3ds where in. It is far worse.

Wolfbiker4172d ago

I'm an American and I believe that many gamers here are shallow and simple minded fools influenced by mass media way too much.

However to generalize so broadly is pretty silly...I could say the same about a lit of populations...it just really is very prevalent in America.

WeAreLegion4172d ago

It's true. We are very influenced my media. Lol. Elections much?

Sanquine904172d ago

Elections... The whole world sees how the president candidates are spending lots of money to promote themself. So much money for a country with such high debt. Every year your parlement have to raise the bar to lend more money. The time will come that America is in some huge shit. The EU crisis will be nothing in compared with that. The moral of the story is that many people can not understand that something like elections are so big to just promote the president. Here where i live we look at the solutions different parties have about the same problem we are facing: Economic crisis.

rpd1234172d ago

@Sanquine

First off, we don't have a Parliament. Second, the money for campaigns doesn't come from the government, it comes from rich asshats. Third, the EU has more external debt than the US at this point. Fourth, the euro is pathetically weak right now. Finally, I don't know what you think the American political system is like. The whole thing is different ways of approaching the same problems. Republicans think they have one solution, while Democrats think they have their own. The major issue in the election was the economic slump we were in right now, and how each candidate would approach it.

rpd1234172d ago

I'm an American and own a Vita and an Xbox 360. No PS3. I agree that it doesn't need saving quite yet, but I'm pressing disagree. Not because I'm American and like the 360, but because you're an ass.

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty249d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191248d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007248d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic248d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest248d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic246d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg248d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183249d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai249d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl248d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic248d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack248d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730249d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69249d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor248d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69248d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
