With the Wii U launching shortly, we can officially say that the next-gen is coming to a start. Some say that next-gen won't start until all the new platforms are out and some even say the Wii U is considered current gen. Which one is true? Which one is false? The answer is debatable, but what we do know is that both the PS4, also known as Orbis, and the Xbox 720, codenamed Durango, are on the way and sooner rather that later!

nintendo does its own thing. you only have 'generations if consoles are all being released at the same time. the other thing is people only consider console power/graphics, not innovation. calling this current/next-gen is for the kiddies and the media. i don't care if you wanna call it current or next, it doesn't matter, and changes nothing.

Look i dont know about you but its official the wiiu uses a Radeon E6*** which is obviousy either 6770 or a 6760 or with it being custom its more realistically a hybrid of both either way were talking extreme power when you consider both chips SM5 and Compute shader 11 were talking real power 2/3 generation ahead of ps3 wiiu will be equal to ps4 and 720 graphics wise.

Twitter is what confirmed the gpu also it was said the wiiu has a quad core 3.0 ghz cpu not power7 but power based with features from watson and power7 and is 20 times the power of wii and 2.5 times the ps3 all confirmed on Twitter.

Hate to break it to you dude, the Watson twitter account CONFIRMED afterwards it is NOT power7. They apolygised. However according to Devs, its 3 wii cores and is having problems rendering many characters on screen simultaneously in DW7.
Also.. they may have upped the GPU power since the original dev kits.. but a year ago they packed a HD4850.

Im hoping its a "next gen" gameplay experience Nintendo wants.. if its graphics.. their bringing a knife to a gun fight next gen.

I am not sure. I know that the Wii U is using a special disk that stores way more than a DVD, but it is not Blu-Ray. To use regular blu-ray Microsoft would have to pay a royalty. I just looked it Up a DVD holds 4.7 GB Nintendos disk holds 25 GB and Blu-ray 33.4 GB per layer.

Wii U proprietary disks are confirmed to hold 25GB.

The lowest end DVDs hold 4.7GB, most hold ~8-9GB (like the 360's disks), with rare double sided and double layered DVDs holding ~17GB.

Blue-ray can hold 25 to 33GB per layer depending on the standard size being used. Some companies have reported the ability to manufacture a BR disk that is 16 layers(~500GB total).

If my memory serves correctly: The royalties on using a Blue ray tech is only a few cents per blue ray drive and less than 1 cent per disk.

I remember experiencing it for the first time. I saw COD2 at Virgin in Time Square, NY and I was flipping. I got home and immediately concluded that I needed an XBOX for these revolutionary graphics and action.

I literally played that game for months. My friends and I would gather to play local multiplayer in the Carenton and Tunisia maps over and over.

Sadly, that was the last game I remember playing local multiplayer. I've gotten older and have detached myself from that notion since then

It's all about playability not sheer hardware power and graphics. Look at all the digital PSN/XBL/Wii Ware downloads. Not a lot of those games are next gen worthy but we enjoy them. I'm not all about power, I'm about story and music. The extra graphical detail will be a bonus for sure though.

Graphics are awesome, but I need a game that will immerse me. Sure it's easier to do when the world is so beautiful around you, but if the story sucks, the menus are terrible, camera angles are difficult, and the game is buggy and/or laggy, I will not be impressed and trade it in for something else.
With that said, I don't think this will be the case for the next gen systems and games. Every 'new gen' system I've cracked open and played I've been blown away - there has been such a leap forward in graphics, playability, and story that the old generation becomes a fond memory, or something to play when we miss the 'old' times. The PS4 will be a beast for sure, the Xbox will be insane, and as for the Wii U I'm sure they'll do well with their core games.

Wii U spills the first blood? It's more ketchup than blood if you ask me, with Wii U being a 7.5th generation console. Nintendo has its own line of products appealing to a spesific fanbase, so they're not in a direct competition, they'll sell nevertheless. The real war will begin when MS and Sony pull their swords, when hardcore gamers will have to decide which console to get.

I have to agree with you, it's tiresome when people talk about it. But the best way to "enjoy" it is to side with neither console and just watch how silly some people can sound, sometimes. :P
Besides, I think the publishers relish the competition, or "war" as some people call it. It gets their work force interested, all pumped up and motivated. In the long run, it really doesn't matter, but keep in mind that console wars have been going on since the beginning. From Atari 2600 vs. Intellivision vs. Colecovision, to Nintendo vs Sega, to Sony vs. Microsoft. It's not going to end. Might as well try to enjoy it. lol
