Spec Ops: The Line – The Shooter We Need Right Now: All Age Gaming

The phrase, “pilgrim in an unholy land,” can best summarize my mental space as of this writing. 343 Industries have released Halo 4, where Master Chief boldly and triumphantly fights off against alien forces with some powerful guns. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is around the corner which is guaranteed to include soldiers boldly and triumphantly fighting off against some nebulous terrorist organization with powerful guns. Medal of Honor: Warfighter has come out where some soldiers of military origin inspired by real-world events grit their teeth and fight off enemies with guns. Also, in an attempt to break the mold, CryTek’s Crysis 3 will come out where you play as a military man in a super suit of armor fighting aliens with cutting edge military hardware…and guns.

I played through it twice, just because I was in an achievement-whoring mood. It was decent at best....nothing worth recommending to a friend. As for the story, it wasn't as thought-provoking as some would have you believe. There's not really many choices throughout the game...you pretty much have to kill whoever is in front of you to advance the narrative, like every other shooter of the last decade.

SeraphimBlade4182d ago

The story isn't really about the choices. It's a condemnation of the military shooter and a damn good one. Hell, it was so good it pretty much turned me off of the genre forever. "Like every other shooter of the last decade?" Exactly. Think about how closely this tragedy mirrors the story and setpieces of your average military game, but twists them. The actions that make other shooter characters heroes make these characters monsters. And the game says YOU are the worst of the bunch because you keep playing and letting it happen: "If you were a better person, you wouldn't be here."

In this case, it's more important what the game is saying than what is happening in the plot.

BushLitter4182d ago

This is my favourite game of 2012 so far. Darksiders 2 was a near thing and then I reached the end. What a disappointment.

SeraphimBlade4182d ago

Another crap ending? Okay guys, something is going around. Anyone Bioware, THQ and Ubisoft have worked with should probably get themselves checked out.

Grimhammer004182d ago

Game mechanics were servicable. Story was very good and made me question fps genre.

But then I realized....it's probably why bad guys are bad in real life...it's more fun to be an a$$hole. Lol

Spec Ops: The Line was super dark.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend61d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long62d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons62d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor62d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5261d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60261d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Skuletor62d ago

Terry_B61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

It's really a shame that the Spec Ops reboot didn't continue into a series. Obviously the story in The Line is over. But each game could have delved into the different psychological effects of war as well as exploring different takes on Heart of Darkness. In a sea of mindless military shooters it was nice to finally play a shooter that actually had something to say.

EazyC81d ago

This game was the last of a dying breed, a signifier of where shooter games (and videogames more broadly) COULD have gone if developers didn't pivot so hard into the online services, micro transaction, season pass, yada yada.

New narrative territory exploring the actual art form of gaming and storytelling within it.

Yui_Suzumiya81d ago

A brilliant depiction into what war can really do to a person and doesn't glorify it in any way.

Psychonaut8581d ago

I heard this game might be getting delisted, which is a travesty, this is one that should be preserved forever

Puty80d ago

I think the title was unfortunate - it was when Moder Warfare got big so I assumed it was yet another clone. Fortunately, because ps plus I checked out this gem of a game.
