The Dark Hour Has Come to the West: The Rising Popularity of Persona Stateside

Matt Randisi writes, "Persona, Atlus’ occult high school-sim series was an instant hit in Japan; it takes place after all in the land of the Rising Sun and highlights much of the nation's culture right alongside an entertaining supernatural element. While many Shin Megami Tensei games are indeed localized, titles like Digital Devil Saga and Devil Summoner do not enjoy a huge fan base like the one right across the ocean. Recently however, popularity has been on the rise, a fact that is in no small part due to Persona 4, in particular its upcoming re-release on the Vita, it's Arc System fighting game spin-off, and its smash-hit animation series. The Western audience is finally 'getting it' and is realizing what Persona brings to the RPG table: a thoughtful, rewarding experience that caters to just about every fan of the genre. But for those reluctant to dive into the deep waters of Persona, here's a look what exactly makes the series so appealing to a fellow Gaijin such as yourself an...

I need persona 5,

Playing Persona 3 for the second time(on my vita as a PSP download) and am thinking of buying persona 4 the golden. Didn't play persona 4 myself but i watched my friends play the entire game.

I need a new persona game

AngryOcelots4182d ago

I've been hoping for a Persona 5 announcement for a couple of Tokyo Game Shows now. A current gen Persona game is quite overdue.

Scissorman824182d ago

Watching someone playing it and actually playing it are two different things. ^_^ Go grab a Vita and enjoy Golden; you won't be disappointed.

Persona 5 was announced back in August... last year. And started full fledged development this August. So we're bound to at least see some sort of teaser by spring.

Grap4181d ago

Persona games are half-off this week on psn! If you don't have Persona 3 FES, nows the chance to get it for only $5! Plus all the psp games are half off too!

zgoldenlionz4181d ago

I'm gonna rebuy FES so I don't have to worry about my ps2 dying and never getting to play again also picking up P3P for my wife so she can game on the go.

Thanks for the heads up on the sale. ^^

One of the greatest RPG franchises ever!

wishingW3L4181d ago

come on... P3 and P4 were good but all the others are average at best. That's why the Persona franchise was never popular until P3 came out in 2007.

omarzy4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

I enjoyed the second one quite a bit, but i think P3 and P4 are more than good. They are fantastic. I put sooo much time into those games playing them on the the hardest difficulty, doing new game plus for P4, P3: FES gave me the answer and i played the original stroy again, played the psp p3,psp p2, and psp p1, but that was just ok.

I'm a very big fan of the series, and i will playing P4 again when i get the golden for my vita on the 20th.

AngryOcelots4181d ago

I rather enjoyed 2 myself, but 3 and 4 were definitely in another league. There really isn't a bad game in the Megaten series as a whole.

Arnagrim4181d ago

1 and 2 only seem average now because of their age.
Back in the day they were some of the best RPGs around, any detriment to their quality is due to the evolution of the RPG as a whole leaving them looking archaic in this day and age. Chrono Trigger is an amazing game, but I don't know many people who can play it for the first time nowadays and appreciate it, just because newer RPGs offer so much more.
The reason why P3 and P4 are so popular is due to their ease of access while still being enjoyable to veteran RPG fans, while P1 and P2 are more akin to the Megami Tensei core titles, generally more 'hardcore' RPGs, with a bigger focus on character development. Generally fans of 1 and 2 are also fans of the core MegaTen games while those who prefer 3 and 4 are those new to the series.
Both phases of the Persona series are amazing nonetheless, though personally Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishments story easily trumps 99% of other RPGs in maturity, quality and depth.

Played Persona4 Golden on Vita, my first Persona game, for my Japanese studies :) It is an amazing game, spent more than 90 hours on it.

Hicken4181d ago

One of these days, I'll get around to buying and playing the first two. For now, I look forward to playing P4G, and P5 whenever it comes out.

You'll be disappointed. They are really bad.

Persona 3 Director Says The Game Saved Atlus From Collapsing

The studio was on the verge of collapse when Persona 3 came out, and things were looking quite grim for Atlus. Regardless, many decisions made in the game paid off and became a staggering success.

SDuck230d ago

Years ago, I was emulating the game on my laptop and the old thing died when I was about to get to the final boss. I'm more than happy to buy this remake when it comes out so I can finish it!

TheColbertinator230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

At the time I was immersed in SMT Nocturne and later DDS. I did not realize at all how important Persona would become for me years later.

raWfodog230d ago

Persona 3 FES was the first one that I played in the series. Looking forward to the remake.

I'll have to make this a mission the next time I blow through Tokyo.

Hopefully soon, given the limited availability.

Seraphim280d ago

send me one while you're at it. I mean what's better than Whiskey and Persona? A cigar with the two, and that would be perfection personified.

Remasters And Remakes Make Up 90 Percent Of 2023's Highest-Rated Games

Only one of the games on the top ten is completely original.

90 percent of Metacrtitic's top ten highest-rated games of 2023 so far are remasters and remakes, with Hi-Fi Rush acting as the only wholly original game to make the list so far.

We might only be in March, but it seems like we've already got tons of great games to be talking about, including Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, Hi-Fi Rush, Persona 4 Golden, and Metroid Prime Remastered. There is one commonality between those games, however - most of them are remakes and remasters.
