Why Assassin's Creed Defines This Generation

1up - Ubisoft's franchise encapsulates the past seven years of console gaming.

-Mezzo-4183d ago

Easily one of the best Franchise to have come to life this Generation.

MaxXAttaxX4183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

It needs a dedicated jump/climb button.
You just end up clinging on to walls you don't intend to climb all because they made it the same as the run button. More so in AC3.

Gambit_the_White4183d ago

@NathanExplosion

Yeah, that's actually the only negative thing I can mention about this game. Sometimes when I just wanna run straight ahead, I end up spending like 5 minutes trying to drop down from something I never intended to climb in the first place xD It's a great game nonetheless.

N311V4183d ago

I've heard this criticism before but personally it's not something I experience. I might be because I only ever run when chasing or being chased by someone. When I'm just trying to get from point A to point B I typically fast walk as it feels out of place to be springing through the streets for no reason.

Campy da Camper4183d ago

I would put Infamous in the top tier, too. Great story superb gameplay and it actually allows you to set the difficulty to your style. Man I hope I3 is a next gen launch title.

Irishguy954183d ago (Edited 4183d ago )

Looks over substance

This gen ^

Assassins creed Perfectly represents this gen. The animation, the fluid 'looking' combat, extremely easy gameplay, repetitive etc

edit-
Logic, I ain't saying it has to be difficult, but it has to be challenging. I never found a point in 'running/hiding' in the AC franchise. It's always been almost impossible to die, Assassination and stealth were never what it was about, that was supposed to be the main gameplay element. Not fighting off hordes of enemies with extreme ease to the point that combat itself is actually boring. Also, you spend most of AC playing it, not watching an epic story or characters like Heavy Rain. It's just a shame the gameplay is so mediocre.

Easy does not cover how easy AC is. And you say it "it's a design choice". Yeah that's right, it's a bad design choice

LOGICWINS4183d ago

I don't see easy gameplay as a con. It's a design choice. Games like AC/Yakuza aren't challenging because they are about showing you epic stories/characters, not difficult gameplay.

chaldo4183d ago

Oh look he doesnt have enough bubbles to comment back =(

Soldierone4183d ago

I'd compare it to Sly. The game is the fun of sneaking around, climbing things, and finding things while the story evolves around you.

The game doesn't need to be hard to be fun. Assassins Creed being easy isn't like shooters being easy, its entirely different.

in other words I agree lol

ginsunuva4182d ago

Where did Yakuza come from?

badz1494183d ago

I'm not even a fan of CoD, neither am I a fan of AC too but in terms of defining this gen, CoD wins hands down!

Soldierone4183d ago

I would say thats the entire point, lol

Look at this generation compared to last ones. Shooter after shooter after shooter. COD dominated nearly the entire time, and a lot of games lost their creative tones. Before you could have cartoon mascots, this generation everything had to be "realistic" and revolve around guns....

Hicken4183d ago

Sadly, you are correct. I wish you weren't, though, as there are plenty of games that don't get the recognition they deserve from gamers because they're not Call of Duty.

vortis4183d ago

I don't know why you're getting disagrees but you're 100% correct.

Blaps 2 will make a $1 billion and still have a bunch of pubs chasing the dollar signs like guys chase tail.

I also agree with the Irishguy above about Assassin's Creed...it's a good franchise but it's waaaaaaaaaaay too easy. The only time I die is because I choose to die. I've never "naturally" died in the game because of enemy difficulty. As a top notch, stealthy assassin I found myself easily mowing down hundreds of guys with ease and I can't tell you how lore-breaking that is. '

COD on the otherhand...meh. It's a cash-in title and it perfectly represents what this gen is compared to the previous ones, as Soldierone pointed out.

There still isn't a game this gen that compares to Shadow of the Colossus in terms of originality, innovation and story intrigue, the closest thing is Dark Souls and that's nothing like Shadow of the Colossus.

And WTF is up with all the mascots going away for Michael Bayism? Worst. Choice. Ever.

Relientk774183d ago

Assassin's Creed is definitely one of my favorite franchises this generation

Treian4183d ago

Uncharted defines this generation.

LOGICWINS4183d ago

For me, it's a toss up between Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, GTA: Liberty City stories, Batman: Arkham City, and Assassin's Creed 2(Haven't played AC3 yet).

All of of them have fun gameplay, engrossing stories, and fantastic characters. I recommend these games to ANY gamer.

I'd give honorable mentions to Yakuza 4 and Valkyria Chronicles. Both are excellent titles IMO, but they may not be for everyone.

Can We Finally Admit Assassin's Creed 3 Deserves an Apology?

AC3 was released during a turbulent transition period for Ubisoft and the Assassin's Creed series. It ventured into uncharted territory, narratively and mechanically, which caused it to receive mixed reviews. At its core, though, it's a damn good stealth game.

Nope, I hated 3, connar was bland, literally the most flat character in the entire game. Not to mention to myriad of bugs, camera issues, and that annoying thing where he automatically ditches his weapon you payed for for the sake of a cool finishing move forcing you to trek back to your base after almost every encounter just to re-equip your own weapon. It just didn't work as fluidly as the others like 2 and 4

Samonuske189d ago

The series peaked at AC3 for me. It’s been my favourite in the series. Connor will always be one of my favourite video game protagonists.

Becuzisaid189d ago

No. Game was BORING. Connor was really dull. Environments, while impressive, because of the geographic location and time period were not really exciting to be in. I would love some kind of game set in there colonial American time period, but a game like AC that back then centered around parkour and vertical traversal really didn't fit those environments.

-Foxtrot189d ago

Nope

There was a lot of issues but mine is how they handled the war

They told us Connor was not going to get involved, that the war was more of a background setting for the real story and it wasn’t going to be one sided

They lied, even the cinematic E3 trailer showed Connor emerge from the Colonist side and slaughter the red coats to get to his target, inspiring the Colonists to fight back

I just thought it would have made more sense lore wise that the red coats were mostly compiled of Assassins fighting the Colonist templars who wanted to take the new world for themselves.

Since the Red coats lost the war, it would then explain how the Templars started to gain the upper hand and how on the future the assassins were mostly killed off and the Templar’s had pretty much taken over everything.

Instead it just felt like they didn’t want to p*** off the American audience

Even Haytham was cool, he should have been an Assassin through and through and should have been the main lead.

toxic-inferno189d ago

The game even seems to lack the humour of the other games. It almost seems as though the idea of even slightly making fun of American history wouldn't be acceptable.

-Foxtrot188d ago

Exactly

It just felt super safe

“Better not make the colonists look super bad incase people boycott our game”

jeromeface188d ago

someone missed the whole point

-Foxtrot188d ago

There was literally no point

What I've just said above would at least make sense lore wise and why the Assassins start to loose their war, die off and how the Templars are in control in the future of almost everything....what they did was just, pointless

CrimsonWing69189d ago

I’m one one of those weird people that liked Ass Creed 3, but to be fair I never got around to finishing it.

GhostScholar200d ago (Edited 200d ago )

I disagree that max is unlikable. Chloe is infinitely more unlikable in my opinion.

gold_drake199d ago

omg chloe was awful. i really hated her at the end haha

Cacabunga199d ago

Abby was absolute trash protagonist in every way..
Tidus was so meh to me..
On villain side, the one i didn’t like wa Micah, because they wanted him to be that way and it was brilliant👍🏽

Rancegamerx199d ago

I agree, I liked Max, Chloe was a horrible friend and a bad influence.

Cacabunga199d ago

Everyone agrees on chloe, I’m sure even ND do.

H9199d ago

Both are horrible, granted Chloe is infinitely worse, it feels like Chloe is just fanservice for people who too over the edge and wasn't written to be a character that makes sense

GooGobbler200d ago

What about that Forspoken Tw*t

MrChow666199d ago

exactly I was expecting it to be a the top of the list

ravens52199d ago

Ye I was expecting her too. Guess they actually played the game. Unlike you and whoever agrees.

gpimlott198d ago

I played through the whole game and think she is one of the worst character Ive ever played as

ravens52198d ago (Edited 198d ago )

gpimlott. How?

Stanjara189d ago

Why would I payed and played the game if the whole internet is making fun of a character?

-Im here to kill Chaos...are you Chaos?

Yeah, I didn't play that game either.

Christopher199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

She's actually not bad. It's the writing itself that is bad overall, but she's fine overall. She's no worse than Miles Morales IMHO. Both thrust into a spotlight and receiving both praise and blame and dealing with it.

Forspoken is a bland game because it's 75% bland, boring, repetitive going through the motions and diversions that add nothing of the value with purposefully gated memory moments that don't feel organic or like you're discovering things but waiting for others to reveal things.

ravens52199d ago

Exactly Chris. Even though I liked the game. I kno u played it. People who actually played it and went thru her dream saw she was a good likeable person who really just acted out due to being alone and unloved. I think your problem is it was open world, I think if it was more linear you may have liked it better.

savedsynner199d ago

Oh no she's bad. Very unlikable even before you add on the bad dialogue. The game could have been quite good with a good protagonist

ravens52199d ago

For all the people like synner. Shes actually half white lol. Inferior complexity is a hell of a thing. You'll be ok.

Nerdmaster200d ago

Most of these aren't even that bad. Especially comparing to others like Squall "Whatever" Leonhart, Forspoken's Frey, and the guy from Atomic Heart.

-Foxtrot199d ago

Squall is one of the best developed main FF characters so...

People talk about his "whatever" thing thats at the start of the game, not the character he eventually becomes in the end.

Nerdmaster199d ago

No amount of "character development", (especially the ones that for me feels sudden and undeserved like Squall's), will justify him being a d**k to my girl Quistis. Even if he found the cure for cancer, from that moment on, I would never like him.
The article is about being unlikeable, and he was indeed unlikeable for at least half of the game.

BrainSyphoned199d ago

Squall is the best protagonists in FF so you can go whatever yourself.

H9199d ago

My good sir, I need to steal that "you can go whatever yourself" because it's gold

BlaqMagiq1199d ago

Except Squall has actual character development.

gold_drake199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

the "watever" is only present in the english localisation.
so your argument doesnt rly ... stand imo.

Nerdmaster199d ago

Good for you that you could enjoy the japanese version. That's not the case for me and the majority of people here, though.
