Final Fantasy VII: So disappointing, I deleted it from my PS Vita

2d-x writes: A few week ago I was eager to re-experience Final Fantasy VII after its release on PS Vita as a PSOne Classic. I report with no shame that I am unable to finish the game. It’s not due to Final Fantasy VII’s difficulty or failing to understand the Materia system–the game isn’t worth my time.

Final Fantasy 7 was the game that made me completely regret getting a N64 instead of a psx back in the day, i remember watching the Opening FMV at my friends house and having my jaw drop. After selling my n64 and getting a psx i rented ff7 and beat it without a memory card, one of the most fun gaming experiences of my teen age years. So I ask you, why is the game a mess? Yeah Final Fantasy is an outdated mess. Clunky and full of bad game design that fanboys were happy to put up with back in the day (and some even now), but really the only thing it has going for it is the story, turn based RPG's are all garbage IMO.

LOL You're not kidding: I remember when I first got a PS3 and that You're not "e" (red-e) disc: I put that thing in and played Mortal Kombat, Warhawk, Twisted Metal, and OMG, Loaded. I bought every one of those games and loved it.

You didn't even need to grind, you just equip the materia that increases your max HP and i'm sure there was materia or an equipable item that would cause the limit breaks to come around ridiculously quick.

In a word FF7 was easy and boring in comparison to FF3/6. How it ever got the accolades its received i'll never know. Not saying this as its cool to hate, the game was just a bit crap considering what had come before it.

Uh...because it was the first 3D Final Fantasy game, the first mainstream RPG in the West, and it was practically unheard of for a game to be as large and "epic" as FFVII was. You need to remember that this game came out during the era when developers were still struggling with modelling their games in 3D, and FFVII not only had an immense and explorable 3D world but amazing-for-their-time FMVs and a story that was far more engaging and advanced than many gamers in the West had ever seen in a video game.

Seriously, don't people remember when this game was first released? I can understand not getting the hype nowadays, but back in the 90s this game was the pinnacle of what could be achieved on a PSone disc. Nobody ever thought such a huge and epic game could even exist.

Nearly all of the other FF games made it to the west (Albeit USA rather than Europe)and anyone who knew their RPGs would have imported it (as I had to being based int the UK) so the only thing it really holds is the first FF game in 3D. Most gamers were either too naive, clueless or young to actually be aware that there were several games before FF7 despite the big number 7 on the case.

FF6 was vastly superior in story and content, the sheer scope of the game along with 20 selectable characters actuallly dwarfs what FF7 had to offer. Its an old argument as to what FF is the best, most will be based around nostalgia and the way I remember it is that FF6 was great, FF7 not so great. And when i've gone back to them recently, FF6 is running in an emulator on my phone that I play often, FF7 just looked horrific so not bothered playing it again. I would have thought that most who came up through the ranks of the FF series would not see FF7 as the better game.

I totally remember when it was released, I was hyping the sh*t out of it after pouring in well over 100 hours on FF6. Yeah, the 3D made quite a difference I can't deny that but since when is a games merit built on its appearance.

I think that had I played this at the time I would have been a massive fan, but playing it for the first time in 2012 has left me less than impressed. the story is amazing, don't get me wrong but visually and control wise I have been less than fulfilled. Maybe a remake, Square?

I have to disagree on that one. I really got into ff recently and Ive beaten quite a few and played good amount of the rest. VII dooesnt beat VI IMO, but its an fantastic game. The materia is one of the best customization systems Ive experienced, and the limit breaks are nice too. Unlike the author of this article, I loved the story. That said, the whole midgar portion shows really bad taste, and borders on disturbing (Don Corneo mansion). If you quit the game shortly after, you will get the wrong impression on the game. Also, the author says: "If the story doesn’t intrigue, you have nothing to fall back on. Navigating menus isn’t fun. Neither is watching the same spell/attack animations for the twentieth time". To me that translates into: "I dont like turn based RPGs".

My first Final Fantasy was XIII. I liked it but had no expectations going into it.

When I heard "it sucked compared to real FF games" I had to try the others. I bought them on psn. So far I finished VII and barely played the others.

I think nostalgia plays a big part in people's perceptions of the older games.

I think people who grew up playing rpg's since the NES days, like me, prefer the older, turn based battle system. Dragon Warrior 1-8, Final Fantasy 1-X, Skies of Arcadia(Dreamcast and Gamecube version), Crono Trigger, and Grandia 1-Xtreme all are timeless gems that nothing this gen can touch when it comes to quality. Said games were like advanced games of chess. But now 99.99% of rpg's are more like checkers, especially those turds that are called FF 13 and 13-2. Games that pretty much nerfed and trying to be what they were never meant to be (action rpg's) I don't know what the heck happened but I really wish there were at least some generic indy devs that would go back and make games like that again. Even if they were 8 bit.

I had the N64 instead of the Playstation when this game came out originally, so I wasn't able to play it. I finally bought it about three years ago and played it for the first time. I found the game to be great. The story was great and I liked the atmosphere of the game. I enjoyed the battle system and it was just a fun game.

I hear a lot of people complain about the graphics. It's a rather old game. I wouldn't expect great graphics. But I can enjoy an older game for what it is. I don't need the great graphics to enjoy a game. Graphics don't make a game for me.

I mean, I don't understand how you can love Crisis Core and hate VII. They're part of the same story, not to mention there wouldn't be a Crisis Core if VII hadn't been made.

I'm also doubting your critical faculties. I love VII because of it's overall vibe; the way the music contributes to the various locations and vice versa. The careful design of each location and composition to create very particular moods and emotions, and the way all those pieces play off eachother to create one of the most unforgettable, vast and diverse game worlds I've ever had the joy of playing. The emotional trajectory of the game's plot is just controlled so well by all the minute elements that comprise the game, I mean it really is fantastic.

It's also a pretty genius plot, particularly in it's execution. Just the ominous, menacing feeling that accompanies following Sephiroth's trail of destruction, the edge of your seat mystery of the character's backstories as they're gradually revealed, Cloud's memories permitting. The moments of calm before the storm. The intrigue of infiltrating the Shinra building, I mean the plot just unfurls with such excellence and with such dramatic artistry.

If you don't consider or even detect these elements, I think you're ignoring an awful lot of what makes the game so special.

This game was awesome. I understand that people today stick to playing FPS games and rarely play RPG's especially here in America. I enjoy most gaming genres except sports or anything related to sports. FF7 still is an awesome game today as well as FF8,FF9, FFX, Wild Arms, etc.. Rpg games are games where you have to use your head to figure things out, pay attention to an actual story, character development, where to go next, and tons of other things absent in most of today's games. I played VII after playing VIII, and upon hearing that VII was supposed to be the superior title, was somewhat disappointed. It's still a great game, but I didn't see it as the masterpiece it was claimed to be.

I think it holds up fairly well, but it's also true that the game makes far more sense now with Advent Children and Crisis Core.

More than any other game- that I know of- nostalgia seems to be a big factor in why VII is as loved as it is today. I'm fully cognizant of how good it was for the time, and what it meant to the gaming industry, and JRPGs as well. Most other games that represented milestones or paradigm shifts in the industry aren't necessarily all that great in retrospect, and fans of the games recognize the shortcomings of the titles.

But FFVII... nobody who loves that game wants to admit it had ANY blemishes. If it's not your favorite FF, there's something wrong with you. I mean, just look at the responses to the article here. Because he doesn't think VII is the end-all, be-all, he must be new to gaming, or only like easy casual games and shooters.

Played FFVII for the first time 2 years ago. Not as great as people make it out to be. Not hard at all also.

I have 9,10,12 over it in terms of length and gameplay. Story is a wash because (apart from 10's really which was pretty corny a lot of the time) all were pretty much equal. I side with 12's story a lot more because it actually made sense in context to the game world. It made you feel that if that world was real, you could actually see the conflict in the game being carried out (not with as dramatic of an outcome however)

It's all the more clear when you look at this gen and realise how far JRPGs have fallen from their former glory. Really reflects better on the PS1-era Squaresoft games when they can represent the genre in a far better light than the games made now. VII a timeless classic. Pretty much every facet of it is iconic and unforgettable, from the music to the characters to the environments to the material system. Plus it actually made turn-based combat fun.

There will never be another game like it.

In other news, I've been playing RE:DC again but on my Vita. It's still as brilliant as it used to be - even better because I can play it on the toilet! This of course turned a 5 minute dump into a 35 sit over my own faeces.

Someone get the author a copy of Call of Duty or Madden, that's probably more his style... Stupid article, in the first sentence he says he "was eager to re-experience" the game. However, in the introductory sentence to the second paragraph he says this, "I quit Final Fantasy VII shortly after exiting Midgar. Yes, I’ve heard it gets better." Take note: I've HEARD it gets better. But I thought he played it before? Did he only play it through the beginning that time as well? Then what exactly is he 're-experiencing' I smell bullshit.

It could be that because of MGS4 I can't play Japanese games other then what Nintendo puts out (for the most part) but I played FF7 without having played it as a child. It was meh to bad. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion that tends to cloud reality. This is just my opinion and does not mean that you don't enjoy the game/enjoy the game less then you do #N4Gdisclaimers.

legend of dragoon is a better game in pretty much every single way and the only reason why some people cant accept that, is because of nostalgia.

- LOD much longer and its better paced. things build with every disk, whereas FF7 becomes totally sidetracked through the second disk.

- LOD has more in-depth side characters, with all of their back-stories extensively explored. the FF7 side characters like Yuffie, cid, cait sith, and vincent are one dimensional. and how is Cloud any deeper or more interesting than Dart, other than the fact that he carries a giant sword? his backstory, once its revealed, is actually pretty lame and he isnt even a very likable protagonist.

- LOD has higher quality music with far more atmosphere. compare how they do desert themes, for a clear example of the tools they are working with.

there is no comparison. LOD is simply higher quality. take the nostalgia goggles off

- LOD has far, far better graphics and a more coherent style. FFVII mixes its fantasy and steam-punk elements clumsily at times. LOD is more grounded in a consistent reality.

You are entitled to your opinion but I will say this.
If it wasnt for FF7, LOD would not exist, or at least it would not be as good as it is.

FF7 set the bar for RPG's, think about it. The day FF7 came out what other games were there? FF7 was the best of its time, and it made a huge impact on gaming.

LOD is an amazing game, if you think its better than FF7 that's fine but you gotta give credit where it is due.
