Crunchyroll PS3 app gets 720p support

At the end of July, the anime and Asian drama video streaming site Crunchyroll launched an app for PlayStation 3. While their full catalog, including simulcasts, was available at launch, one of the most requested features was missing: high-definition streaming. When the app was first announced, Crunchyroll stated 720p/1080p support would come later in 2012.

Last night, Crunchyroll at last updated their PS3 app to support 720p streams of shows if available. Previously, the maximum resolution Crunchyroll's programming could stream at was 480p. On their website, shows are able to get up to 1080p resolution, so an eventual update to allow full HD on the PS3 app is possible.

The Crunchyroll PS3 app requires a Premium membership. A 30-day free trial is being offered to PS3 app users. A Crunchyroll app for the PS Vita is in the works as well for release later this year.

I'm Hungry For More Crunchyroll Updates!

b163o14202d ago

I prefer NeonAlley over Crunchyroll, no subtitles. Over difference is NeonAlley is a actual channel meaning you can't dictate what you watch, took some getting use to but I like it.

Saturne34202d ago

It lacks many good animes like One Piece and Dragon Ball.

ThanatosDMC4202d ago

Yibis for One Piece. Youtube for all Dragon Ball, Z , and GT episodes.

Crunchyroll got me hooked on k-drama. lol
I like how they show you the raw facts that others shows overlook or sugarcoat, or that plot isn't immediately clear. My first k-drama happened to be Me too flower. (and what a delicious hook it was)

Crunchyroll Anime Finally Comes to PS Plus, Kind Of

Sony has announced that, starting on the 5th December, select Crunchyroll shows will be added to Sony Pictures Core — the movie-based service that PS Plus Premium subscribers have access to. For those who might now know, signing up to the most expensive PS Plus tier gets you access to a fairly sizeable catalog of films at no extra cost — and now some Crunchyroll anime is being thrown into the deal.

The new Crunchy Roll shows are.

86
Log Horizon
Radiant
To Your Eternity
Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun

This perk is super underrated, they have been adding movies in IMAX 4k HDR ATMOS Lossless constantly and no one is covering it, of course....

The last movie update included

Patient Zero
Zombieland
Black Hawk Down
Ghostbusters
Moneyball
Pedestrian
The Quick and the Dead
Eight Crazy Nights

This is I think the third update, they added a bunch of Final Fantasy and Resident Evil and a bunch of other movies in the previous update.

8MM
Glory
Snatch
Vantage Point
The Cable Guy
The Net
Christine
U-Turn
Takers
Premium Rush
The Brothers Grimsby
Boondock Saints

FF Advent Children
FF Kingsglaive
FF The Spirits Within

RE Degeneration
RE Vendetta
RE Damnation

There is a TON of other classic movies on there now, truly the most underrated perk IMHO.

Where are you getting your information from? Unless I'm misunderstanding those movies were there to begin with. I watched Black Hawk Down when the service launched and moaned on this website about how poor quality it was. I know for a fact that I also seen many of those you've listed as new, when it originally launched. The IMAX 4k section of the app is not a perk because its not included you have to pay for almost all of them. The free PS+ section has a maybe a handful - Black Hawk Down being one of them, claiming to be IMAX 4k ATMOS. Which is why I was so disappointed with how poor it was and the fact subtitles were completely broken. The service is pretty garbage - at least currently.

1nsomniac126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

@HassanBROBREE I logged in again today, the subtitle issue on Black Hawk Down has been fixed. The quality does seem to be slightly better than it was. However, ignoring the 5 Crunchyroll titles released this week there has been no updates to the PS+ “perk” since launch.

Ah Log Horizon
wish we had more >.<

SimpleSlave128d ago

Trash. And now that they bought Rightstufanime, they can become an even bigger bag of turd with no competition.

Einhander1972128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

There are plenty of other streaming services that they are competing with many of which are much larger and more established.

Now if you're talking about Microsoft, then you are correct they can't compete with Sony's 40 years of established history in the film and music industry.

And as for anime, I feel like it's worked out pretty good for consumers because the shows they want to watch are no longer split between multiple services. Before one new show would be on Funimation and another would be on Crunchyroll, now basically everything just comes to Crunchyroll , so people don't need two subscriptions Also there were weird licensing issues where something would have dubs on one site but not the other, which now really doesn't exist.

S2Killinit127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

Who is as large as Sony in anime? Im asking because other than Netflix, I dont know any publisher of anime that even comes close to Sony’s ips. But I’m legit asking.

On topic:
I think adding anime to PSPlus is a great move!
Crunchyroll sub would have been the best value I can think of, but Im not naive either. Nothing is free.

Einhander1972127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

Well, to be completely honest I am not that knowledgeable about who is the largest anime publisher. The shows on this list are produced by Kadokawa and NHK, both are Japanese media giants. I don't know a lot about publishing of anime though, only games.

Chevalier127d ago

I definitely agree though love that Funimation is folding into Crunchyroll so i no longer have to have both subscriptions.

As for biggest publishers for anime Crunchyroll is definitely the biggest. Then I would say Hi'Dive and Netflix would be the next biggest ones.

TheColbertinator128d ago

The anime market in the US has been strangled by Sony and they see no need to improve with their competition gone.

S2Killinit127d ago

What the heck are you on about? Somy is the biggest publisher of anime. Some of the greatest anime are Sony products.

Chevalier127d ago

No need to improve? Wtf are you on about. Demon Slayers, Spy x Family and Sony's animes are top series yearly. Plus their competitors aren't exactly slacking either.

Knightofelemia127d ago

I always watch my anime free online.

Kingrizzy90127d ago

Sony should have just bought HIDIVE

Chevalier127d ago

https://variety.com/2023/di...

Highly doubt they would have been allowed to purchase their main competitor after they bought Crunchyroll. AMC already purchase Hi-dive. But if Sony bought Hi-Dive they would basically own the anime streaming market.

DarXyde127d ago

Monopolies are bad.

In case that needs to be said.

Kingrizzy9077d ago

lmao, it did need to be said. i didnt realize they had crunchyroll. sorry guys been locked up for 8 and a half years. been basically left behind in prison. my mistake

Ehh, phone games... I very rarely have interest in one, and even when I do I usually uninstall it a week or two later.

jznrpg160d ago

Netflix has mobile games and no interest from me. Same here
