Difficulty in Gaming – Is it a Selling Point or Not?

theBitFix writes: Quick, I want you to name the hardest games released in recent memory. What comes to mind? If you’re like me the first titles that pop into your head would be games like Demon’s Souls, Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden and maybe even the recent downloadable title Spelunky. Now there’s one thing that I believe all these games have in common, difficulty as a selling point.

To be honest, I've seen one trend:

It depends on the amount of button pushing for the amount of time you have to do the pushing.

Q. Difficulty in Gaming – Is it a Selling Point or Not?
A. It depends on the gamer. Some gamers want difficulty, some do not.

knowyourstuff4230d ago

All you need to do is look at the sales figures of Demons Souls and Dark Souls.
If you can't see where I'm going with this - they both undersold, largely because of the bad game design that led them to being so difficult in the first place.
This, herein, is the difference between challenging and frustrating. God of War is challenging. Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry 3 are all just stupidly frustrating with horrible game design.

pixelsword4230d ago

I don't know if they undersold, but they said that Demon's Souls was the company's all-time best seller.

They were designed to be difficult. That's not a "bad game design" it's a major selling point for gamers that want challenging games. Like I said, some gamers want easy games and some want challenging games. Obviously, the souls games aren't for you.

I think Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls are two of the best games this generation.

Knowyourstuff -

What exactly was badly designed about Dark Souls?
I never encountered a fight or a situation where I died because the game messed up. It was only ever when I made a mistake that I died.

I.e Good game design.

i think it is because lets think about this what was the first thing people thought of when they thought of demon/dark souls, oh man this game is tough i i gotta pick this up, same thing can be said for ninja gaiden, and the original devil may crys.

IWentBrokeForGaming4230d ago

if it is a hardcore title, it should be played as such!

the harder a game is, the harder it is to instantly beat... thus adding longevity to it!

CrimsonessCross4230d ago

Sounds like Diablo 3 logic to me. Not the greatest solution in the world...try again, please.

Depends on what's causing the difficulty.
Some games are difficult because there is genuine difficulty which you can overcome with practice... other games are difficult because they have broken mechanics (like a camera that won't point in the right direction)

Personally, I like it when a game gives options. MGS and DeusEx are two that come to mind off the top of my head; you can play it easy, or make it harder by setting arbitrary limits like not using any weapons, or not killing anyone.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC5d ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Exvalos4d ago

What a weird name, it's essentially devil may cry, devil may cry lol

Cacabunga4d ago

Best to good for me: 3, reboot, 1, 5

2 and 4 are trash, didnt like any of them.
5 has very good gameplay variety but i hated the foes.. it is just insects the whole time. Reboot has the best foes for me

Friendlygamer5d ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey6025d ago (Edited 5d ago )

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya5d ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde5d ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

SeTTriP5d ago

This right here is my order as I thought DMC 5 was amazing and obviously 3 comes after 4 was great and 1 for the nastilgic value it holds 2 was so terrible that my local GameStop gave full refunds to people who returned it.

Why Soulsborne Games Are So Popular Despite Being So Difficult

Soulsborne games are infamously difficult. But why has that difficulty been the secret sauce to success for many of these titles in the genre?

GamesAsAService78d ago

Rewarded effort feels good.

Starting out bad at something and getting better with practice makes accomplishments meaningful.

Getting through these games feels like a journey of self improvement, lol.

You only have yourself to blame if things go poorly, but in a similar way overcoming challenge is similarly a function of your own growth.

franwex78d ago

I think because the games are fair. Gamers can tell that it’s due to their own abilities and not some BS.

jjb198178d ago

I've always loved the sense of adventure and wonder in these games. There's no hand holding, there are surprises and traps everywhere and you have to figure out what some items do. Beating a heide knight was like an accomplishment for me the first time and it felt good to earn that sword he dropped. I've spent hundreds of hours in souls games ever since Kings Field on PS1. The lore is incredible and it makes you think about the history of the world you're in. I can't wait for Shadow of the Erdtree.

SyntheticForm78d ago

It's the recipe of fair difficulty, presentation, boss battles and lore that attract me to these games. The From Souls games have always had a nebulous quality to them that I find fascinating. Demystifying them is a big part of the fun.

OhReginald78d ago

I think its the atmosphere and gameplay. Each of these games unique ways to play and unique settings/atmospheres that are in a league of its own.

....and that's a bad thing how?

343_Guilty_Spark268d ago

If it ain’t on Sony box it’s bad

autobotdan268d ago (Edited 268d ago )

Ninja Gaiden 2 was never multiplat. NG Sigma 2 is a remixed game not the same game at all

darthv72268d ago

Dante's inferno... such a great GoW inspired game. So sad the sequel was canned, it sounded like it was going to be even more epic than the first.

Vits268d ago

Yeap, classic GoW is still better mechanically. But the aesthetics and atmosphere of Dante's Inferno were just top-notch. Shame it never got a PC port, but at the very least is available on modern Xbox.

Juiceid268d ago

This list is ok, but Ninja Gaiden reigns supreme!

GhostScholar268d ago

I just can’t get into the devil may cry series. In my opinion you never feel powerful in those games. The guns are pointless as they only serve to be a flashy part of a combo. DMC was the only one that I could tolerate long enough to beat.
