Delusions of grandeur: The failings of Final Fantasy XIII

Steven Hansen delves into the ways Final Fantasy XIII fails, separating jaded reactionary response from criticism. More importantly, he exposes the reasons behind the missteps; namely, expressly making a game for the AAA market in which sacrificing originality and substance for flash is commonplace.

Who cares at this point? Talk about beating a dead horse.

abzdine4260d ago

i bought it last year for NO MONEY and i still haven't tried it :D

The article was intelligently made. He gave the game and its developers the benefit of the doubt by saying that FFXIII may have suffered the 'AAA' syndrome on the current HD consoles. Perhaps SE was forced to overperform in the graphics area that other elements of the game got poorly developed.

Anyway, the new Lightning Saga is right around the corner, so there might be a chance at redemption for this series. I would have to see how this third installment in the franchise pans out before I buy into it. Note that I still haven't bought FFXIII-2.

awesomeoutof4260d ago

FFXIII-2 is generally better, in the 30 hours I've played so far. My opinion of it lessened about midway through when the pacing took a nose dive and the game introduces what is the prettiest, as well as the longest, most tedious location thus far. Really bungled it. Hopefully the end can even things out.

Story is still whacked out (perhaps more so, because time travel), but the two leads offer more focused and neither are obnoxious.

Author says the reason fans are so mad is that XII was the best so XIII should have not been so bad.

1.) Loads and loads of fans, myself included, hated XII. terrible story, brutal characters, ridiculous progression and AI control system and horrible MMO inspired combat. Any writer worth his salt should not be presenting their opinion as fact.

2.)If the XII was that good fans would be more inclined to let XIII not being as good pass. A lot of people didnt like VIII but didnt turn on the series

awesomeoutof4260d ago

"Jaded Square Enix fans, apparently still upset that the last entry in the series, Final Fantasy XII, is quite possibly the best, dramatically point to XIII as the last straw in their relationship with the company."

That is actually a tongue in cheek jab at the fans who think XII isn't good, because I think it is good (hence, "quite possibly the best").

I don't think I have to preface every little aside with "I think" or "In my opinion" in what is clearly an opinion piece. Plus, it wouldn't read well.

Anyway, loads and loads of fans hate every Final Fantasy game. I personally don't hate any, but I think there are weaker entries in the series (II is still the weakest). I know a lot of people who dislike VII and hold VIII as their favorite; some who dislike VII and VIII wholeheartedly, but stuck with the series and loved XI. Lots of different permutations of liking and not liking games among Final Fantasy fans.

The fact that a lot of people chose to draw their line in the sand at this juncture, which I go into in the piece, is as much due to the build up leading up to the game (longest development cycle, a CGI trailer released way too early, multiplatform flip flopping, etc.) as it is the flawed end product.

I find his comments around how Balan turned out to be very insightful as to why the game is trash. He basically apologises for its existence

solideagle11d ago

can you please give some of us who don't know anything about this, a summary of what happened?

Chocoburger11d ago

Balan was knowingly rushed out by S-E, it had an extremely short dev cycle and was fairly low budget.
Naka was the game's director until near the end when he was fired or perhaps he quit, I forgot.

carrotcakeag11d ago

@Chocoburger Yeah they did fire and replace him which caused him to unload a bunch of rants about the company. The project only existed because of Naka in the first place, he convinced Square to give him one shot at making a platformer. They gave him an opportunity but pulled the rug out before he was done for reasons not explained.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5213d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5213d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

MrNinosan13d ago

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5212d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5212d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos13d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani12d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum13d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman13d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim13d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I disagree Batman
