Sumo: Wii U graphics on-par with PlayStation 3, "maybe even better"

British developer Sumo Digital has found the Wii U's graphical capability to be "on-par" with current generation consoles - "or maybe even better".

The Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed developer divulged the information to Eurogamer as we tested out the upcoming racer's Wii U version.

2. It makes the 360 the "lesser" of the two graphical consoles this gen (the Wii being the least), putting-off 360 owners.

What sucks is that the haters are by far the loudest of us, they always have an opinion and a point to get across and will do whatever it takes to make their voice heard. Why this sucks is because it harms the image of us all. Harms the industry, and effects every player out there.

What's worse is gaming media sites tend to encourage trolling for the simple fact that they fuel their comment section. IMHO trolls should be discouraged and stripped of their power in every way possible. The most effective way to do this is to pay as little attntion to them as possible, when possible. There is a "loud crowd" not just here but practically everywhere (youtube, IGN, various forums, etc), who hate on EVERYTHING by one company, be it Nintendo, Sony, or MS. Those games you're talking about are mostly linear, static QTE games sometimes with fixed camera design.

I was talking about games that show the true difference with more complex design that take true power to run them. Games like Crysis 2, GTA4/5, Sleeping Dogs, Rage, Skyrim, Watch Dogs, Forza Horizon/4 Talking bigger and more open games with more features and mutli player games that are more taxing.

There are multiplatform games that look better than PS3 exclusives that are much more ambitious in design and tech that run and look better on the 360.

Just because some multiplatform games look better on the 360 does not mean the PS3 is less powerful. That's a complete logical fallacy. Most multiplatform games are lead-developed first on 360 and then ported to the PS3, hence the poor optimization of the PS3 versions.

If every developer led on PS3 or focused on optimizing their games for the PS3 first, then the story would be completely different. Battlefield 3, LA Noire, and Portal 2 are clear examples of this; they more-or-less look better on PS3 because their lead console was the PS3.

Given 3rd party devs make the majority of games on all consoles maybe you should pipe down and listen to them. Yes the PS3 is powerful, even more so than the 360 BUT with only 512MB of RAM that "power" is quite difficult to harness because of RAM bottlenecks and given it is such a different development method compared to developing for PC which most devs know very well and which is why they are able to get most out of the 360.

I am not sure why this is even up for debate. Look if the 360 currently is more or less on par with the PS3 then I think it stands to reason that a machine that has a similar set up to the 360 but approx 150% more RAM (1.5GB) would be improved on performance all the way around. Any bottle necks the current machines, PS3 or 360 are having with their 512MB of RAM will be significantly improved upon.

Samtheseed posts the quote correctly, but you can hardly blame Sony fans with that title. Plus, it's not like PS3 fanboys are the only ones showing up. The handful of Nintendo fanboys on the site are represented, as are general anti-Sony posters like greenpowerz.

As for PC, why are you bringing it up in reference to consoles? Consoles within a generation are, historically, in direct competition with each other. In that respect, it makes sense to be skeptical about Nintendo just now entering the HD era, as the current generation already does that. PC isn't in competition with consoles in the same way; if they were, however, that would make Nintendo's Wii U look THAT MUCH WORSE, being that it's even further behind PC than the 360 and PS3.

At least the start, I'm not expecting a huge graphical leap from PS3 to Wii U. For one, that doesn't make sense. For PS3, the comparison was to the PS2(the weakest of last generation). So why not compare the Wii U's graphical prowess to the Wii's performance? That's a more logical comparison from one generation to the next, and parallels the one from PS2 to PS3.

The Wii U is going to be the only console running Assassins Creed 3 at 1080p and 60fps. That tells me that its more powerful than the Xbox 360 or PS3.

The next generation isn't going to be a huge leap, Nintendo just having an HD console is going to mean there wont be a huge noticeable difference between the next gen console games.

Hence why a significant chunk of big multiplatform games weren't on the wii and there was a lack of content for months at a time to play on the wii.

For nintendo fans just getting into the hd era sure no problem, for most ps3/360 owners yeah that will be a huge problem at anything above $250.

Basically wii owners are used to marginally improved hardware from 2 generations ago. Ps3/360 owners are used to the hd graphics, physics, online connectivity ect, that are lacking on wii games.

So all this has a been there done that, feeling to hd owners, especially with nintendo's online still questionable at best.

The wii u, is supposed to be a next gen console going up against the ps4 and xbox 720, not the ps3/360 a current and before too long a last gen console.

I saw absolutely nothing from nintendo that says this is a next gen console(ie shock and awe/omg), the ps3 exclusives looked better visually than the wii u games.

So yeah $350 for on par or slightly better than current gen consoles, is a hard pill to swallow, for a gamer that isn't a massive nintendo fan.

And this is a good thing, for you as the player how exactly?

It's true that graphics don't make a console, it's games and services/features do, but since we aren't even doing 1080p across the board at a steady 60 fps.

I really think people should stop trying to downplay the importance of graphics/power in the upcoming consoles.

Look at some of the breakthroughs(for consoles at least, pcs may have had this already) that has been made this gen, full motion capture, facial motion track ect.

Uncharted, gears, and god of war, halo(added it) okay stop using these games as examples. Because absolutely none of them fit nintendos style of games, all nintendo's games(franchises) are very stylized.

Nintendo is likely never(i hate using that word) going to bother with uncharted's level of detail to animation or facial features. Have gow's level of scale(ie fighting on a giant monster climbing up a mountain), it is pointless overkill for most of it's franchises. They aren't going to make a violent fps like gears or halo.

Most of there franchises are for younger audiences, that don't look for or even care about graphics, physics, ai, challenges ect. If you do see content like that a 3rd party probably made it.

Ps3/360 gamers are looking at pc gaming as a reference point/guide as to how their next gen consoles will progress to ect.

Nintendo goes in whatever odd ass direction they want to, which is why i'll likely pick up a wii u the same time frame i bought a wii. 5 yrs later for under $100, after it had 15-20 games that looked appealing to me.

WiiU has a custom E6760 basically SM5.0/opengl 4.1/Compute shader 11/32 mb of EDRAM shared between the gpu/cpu which is a 4 core cpu underclocked from 3.7 ghz to 3.2ghz.

I refuse to buy the Wii U for another Mario or Zelda game. I'd rather replay the millions of other Mario and Zelda games on my other Nintendo consoles.

If I buy the Wii U it will be for its next gen power.

I refuse to drop £300 for 7 year old hardware. So I won't be preordering this console as Nintendo won't confirm specs - which is worrying. They did the same thing with the Wii and we know how that turned out...

since i bought a wii when ps3 and 360 had there more powerful tech i didnt mind wii having less power so why buy another wii with ps3 power when i didnt care this gen. i got my ps3 for its power and wii for its controller i dont need a wii with the same power of my ps3 especially now that the ps4 is coming with there hope to be actual next gen graphics.

Its like saying 3ds graphics are "possibly better" than PSP even tho the 3ds already has something like Resident Evil revelations that uses effects neither PSP<PS2<Gamecube<Xbox 1 or Wii can handle. Sure it runs at a lower resolution but resolution =/= graphics.

(but again WiiU can run AC3 in higher resolution than the competition.)

I think it will depend on how heavily titles depend on the Wii U Pad.

It will take away processing power from the main unit and they will have to consider whether pad usage is an option as otherwise the graphics from single player (no pad) to two players (with pads) would be far to noticeable.

Sorry, Nintendo you might have saved gaming in the 80's but your dead in the water now" (which I am sure most of the Nintendo fanboy haters are thinking. And, forgive me for you Nintendo haters for saying I know what your thinking. Yeah, I would have to agree with Nintendo's tried and true premise...It's all about the "experience" and not the graphics, etc. Although, graphics do help some games sell better. Hardcore gamers like the X-box 360 and PS3 because they had the shooters (blood covered), zombie killing, and all out carnage games while Nintendo had the "family" or "baby" games (which I find unfortunate)...well, believe it or not there are quite a bit of dudes out there (like myself) who think "family' is more important than spilling blood, killing cops, and blowing up buildings. Disagree with me all you want. :) And, for the hardcore, maybe Nintendo has "awoke" finally and smelled the coffee since they will "finally" be making more M rated games. It is nice though to remember that we all have different choices for games. etc. We just have to remember that you can't please everyone.

I just wish Nintendo would go back to making awesome consoles & controllers, like the NES & even moreso the SNES.
Mario Galaxy would have been a better game for me personally if it was made on a machine that offered the same graphical punch & fidelity as a 360/PS3.

I like owning 2-3 consoles each gen (I even have a Wii for my kids, but they wanna play my PS3/360 waaaaay more & are only 3 & 6).

If the machine is only as powerful as PS3 & 360, why would anyone bother upgrading, or why would they buy a Wii-U over the other 2, when Nintendo will obviously have to sell the machine for a higher asking price than both, due to the added expense of that damn gimmicky controller (sorry to the fans of this thing), but I would really rather Nintendo focus on giving me MORE than a current gen. powered machine by offering something that will make my jaw drop visually, instead of what I think maybe just a HD Wii + 10%, or maybe & only just maybe, a machine on par with current gen.

From SNES to Wii is not a move I would have hoped Nintendo made in 12 or so years, & from Wii to Wii-U is not a move I hoped they would make. I mean, we all know that the Wii-U is gonna look like crap when PS4 & 720 arrive, as the timing on those machines will just allow better specs, & even taking into account if 1 or 2 of them do the big business thing & offer a gimmick alongside it.
I seriously would like to see Mario & Co. looking as sharp as they play, & also as awesome as the stuff on other consoles, as seeing it look as good as it should have a full gen. ago (7yrs in this case). It just doesn't have that same mouth agape, WOW, effect. It simply looks like a last gen. game, as Mario Galaxy did next to Ratchet, LBP, Rayman & such.
