Epic Games Says Mobile Games are Competing with Current Consoles - Soon to be PC

Epic Games is certainly one studio that has never shied away from voicing its opinion. Whether it is the entire studio or specific members, Epic does not sit quietly by. The latest opinion may not be a huge shock to some people, but still it is something interesting to consider. Epic's Niklas Smedberg says mobile games are "starting to compete with current consoles," which in turn has made development more complex. Smedberg likened mobile development to PC development by saying there are dozens of hardware specifications and platforms to consider. Epic scales its development from high to low for the games, since Smedberg says the studio never does the minimum.

As much as I like my iPad, I don,t use it for serious gaming for one simple reason..... CONTROL. You can,t replicate the accuracy of a analogue stick on a touch screen it's as simple as that and until there are some actual control pads or even some kind of software allowing you to use say a 360 control pad then I will never game on a mobile device. I would much rather sit on a comfy couch playing on a huge screen.

spunnups4268d ago

exactly my thoughts, just worded differently

shoddy4268d ago

agree.
hell to the fuken no to the simple games and control.

I AM A HARDCORE GAMER!!!
I NEED BIG SCREEN, REPONSIVE CONTROL, MATURE RATED GAMES AND GRAPHIC POWER!!!

HammadTheBeast4268d ago

Another classic article about a classic comment from Epic.

mobile games are TYPICALLY shallow and are boring after short stints and are decent time killers on the road, wothout the use of analog sticks and exterior buttons, ill never become a mobile gamer.

Touch screens, for example the game Dead Trigger, while its an above average mobile game as far as gameplay, the controls ruin it for me.

Final Fantasy III. Is this a Shallow title?

Sgt_Slaughter4268d ago

Really? A game that wasn't even a mobile game to begin with is the 1 game you try to make an argument for?

Hahahahahaha XD

Janitor4268d ago

I use a PS3 controller on my GNex. There is even a company that makes a case that attaches the controller to the phone.

LAZL0-Panaflex4267d ago

Exactly, and you could connect it to an HDTV if u wanted too! Something these knuckleheads can't fathom.

The statement has merit. By no means was the article saying that on a graphical level do the compete but yet for money and peoples' time you can clearly see that is true.

Mobile competes with console gaming in that retrospect. The mobile controls and graphics aren't there yet but are improving at such an impressive rate that 2-3 years we could be looking at mobile gaming with the same fidelity as current consoles.

Some gamers prefer mobile some prefer console/PC but they are still both equally gaming.

Next year is the year mobiles rival consoles vita is almost there asis and mobiles will have twice the ram and better soc's 2013 mobiles will show how this gen has aged

Sorry has he seen Crysis 3 dx11? How would one get that on iPad? PC is not mainstream so as far as casual small games goes ipad is competing with facebook games not real pc games.. I really wish Epic was in charge because they make the best games not the most accessible engine.. Mediocre devs..

Big talk from devs who only made one successful game in the last 7 years on console.

Let see ipad compete with planetside 2.

I hope crytek has the best engine next gen to get them off there high horse.

Also why are they not making fortnight for android instead?

Why Epic's Win Against Apple And Google Paves The Way For The Future Of Mobile Gaming

Epic Games winning its cases against both Apple and Google is shaping the way forward for the future of mobile gaming.

shinoff218341d ago

I feel alot of mobile gamers are kids which will at some point probably turn to console or pc. Mobile gaming just doesn't cut it for me.

AlterRecs40d ago

tru dat, but i feel like it's gonna be a lot more viable for people who travel a lot or don't want to invest in a full gaming rig. Think of it as a Switch on drugs, with a LOT more room for free illegal downloads.

Apple to Reinstate Epic Games' iOS Developer Account Paving the Way for Fortnite's Return to iPhone

Epic Games scored a win against Apple as the iPhone's manufacturer is being forced by the European Commission to reinstate Epic's iOS developer account, paving the way for the return of Fortnite to the platform.

Beh. Tim Sweeney is such a pain. He's always trying to force Apple to play by his rules. He should make his own phone, and launch his own app store there and see if he can make it viable. Options are nice, unless they're parasitic, i.e. Epic Games / CCP.

anast44d ago

"He should make his own phone, and launch his own app store."

This is the future of gaming.

jznrpg44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

I hope not I hate gaming on phones

cammers199543d ago

Sorry that apple isn't able to get away with being corrupt.

Abriael43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Imagine being on Apple's side in basically anything. 😂
