John Carmack Says Doom 4 Will Be ‘Done When It’s Done’

Kotaku- Speaking at QuakeCon today, Id's John Carmack said they're hard at work on first-person shooter Doom 4 and it will be "done when it's done."

user54670074274d ago (Edited 4274d ago )

<sigh> Got a while to go I guess

Your not Gabe John...

310dodo4274d ago

I totally agree

hes not Gabe at all

this guy only created Doom and freelance's in rocket science

zeal0us4274d ago

"Your not Gabe, John"

What does that mean?

Godmars2904274d ago

Yet to deliver the goods after a long and well hyped wait.

PhantomTommy4274d ago (Edited 4274d ago )

Gabe had said "It will be done when it's done" about Half-Life 2 if I remember correctly, I guess they are saying Gabe has earned the right to say that but I think that one of the dudes responsible for creating the fps genre has that right too.

yeahokchief4274d ago

That he's not as awesome. duh.

Obligatory RAGE sucked comment.

morganfell4274d ago

Maybe John should be cut some slack since he invented the tech on which Valve's first great game was built.

It may have been heavily modified but the fact is it was his Quake Engine at the foundation of Half Life.

Besides, when it's done is more universally tied to Duke Nukem than Gabe.

WeskerChildReborned4273d ago

I think he's trying to say that Gabe isn't releasing or even like hinting that they are making a Half Life 3. But Gabe doesn't even talk about Half Life 3.

Done when done?? Just make sure it ain't like rage. Rage bleeeeeew.

Mkai284274d ago

He's been saying that on every game from quake 3 to rage.where have you all been?

snipes1014274d ago

Whether or not the dude dapples in rocket science, his shooters haven't moved the genre he created since Doom. Everything he's done can basically be boiled down to a pretty corridor shooter (with the exception of Rage, which was really bland).

otherZinc4274d ago

MikeCosgrove,

You sound absolutely ridiculous. Carmack is the most intelligent individual in the gaming business.

Gabe is no slouch, but you need to read up on Mr. Carmack.

This is why this dude continues to be a joke to me. The mentality that he thinks it is still the 90s and early 2000 thinking that it will be done when it is done is why the games like Rage haven't been up to the standards he is known for. Talking about the technology only puts you so far and now in 2012 you still say it will be done when it is done. Sure keep tossing that money away all while VR Glasses is the next best thing that he is hyping about now.

versusALL4274d ago

I'd rather the game be good then be rushed out and be piece of shit

geth1gh4274d ago

Yea, but it's been 5 years since he hinted at it, and 4 since it was officially announced.

The fact that things like this are still being mentioned is cause for alarm. There is usually a time window for sucessful games.

The fact is we are approaching 5 years and still have nothing show. Just want to point out that this could just be the start to another anticipated release that goes crappy.

PastyGangster4274d ago

Look at how long Duke Nukem Forever was in development, and that game turned out to be utter Sh*t...

Eiffel4274d ago (Edited 4274d ago )

Duke Nukem Forever took so long as a result of countless redesigns and with a staff of perfectionists who didn't know what was better or worse for the game who aimed to make it more than what it could have been. The game was destine for failure.

geth1gh4274d ago

Don't get me wrong. I grew up on doom and doom 3 is still in my top 3 favorite games of all time.

That is why I am being harsh. My expectations are extremely high for this game and all I have had to see is a crappy tech demo called Rage.

It's a bit disappointing at this point, for a fan at least.

You guys are never going to forgive John for the PS3 version of Rage are you? He wasn't trying to kill the myth of the PS3's supposed technical prowess over other consoles(although he did). He tried to release the best game he could on consoles and didn't handicap one version because of the other.

As for the game. It wasn't as modern in design as other games but it sure was fun IMO... Had some of the most solid old school gameplay mechanics ever.

Maybe his tech is too much for consoles and they wasted too much time trying to get the game to work hurting other things in development ;)

The 360 multiple disc fight probably caused a weaker fleshed out game as well causing the devs to not know how much and how little in other regards of the game. Wasted years fighting MSFT not knowing if their game would be on one-two and finally three discs.

CGI-Quality4274d ago (Edited 4274d ago )

It isn't a "myth" when Carmack himself admitted that the PS3 actually is capable of putting out, though slightly, better performance than the 360 (the only other console he could have been talking about).

It also doesn't help your claim when the PS3 puts out industry leading titles when properly optimized.

As for RAGE itself, I picked it up on the 360 (I'm not one to make a huge deal over swapping discs - especially if it means better performance on the disc-swapping version). It isn't the greatest game I've played, but it's definitely a fun experience.

ShabbaRanks4274d ago

I liked Rage, but the ending was sh!t... Oh and why no regular multiplayer... Anyways it was still a fun game imo

Ashunderfire864274d ago

Doom 4 will blow u away so shut your mouth.

TheRacingX4274d ago

Wow!! I didn't know you already played it through, you sure are priviledged

Jazz41084273d ago

Taking many years to make a game sounds like all sony devs and they are guilty of announcing games while they are still in the conception stage.

<sigh>Got a while to go I guess

John your too smart for your own good sometimes...

amaguli4274d ago

Hopefully this means Doom 4 will be an overall better experience than Rage.

SnakeCQC4274d ago

lol doubt it he showed his true ability and it was shit

Ducky4274d ago

Eh? RAGE looked pretty good for a game that ran at 60fps.

Don't really see fair to call it shit when there's nothing in comparison that rivals it.

amaguli4274d ago

@FatOldMan

Rage was a really good looking game, it was just a bore to play in my opinion. The story was bland, the quests were repetitive, and the gamplay was not very smooth. It's like iD just released a tech demo instead of a game.

Ducky4274d ago (Edited 4274d ago )

^ I pretty much agree with you. I found the story to be uninteresting and the general gameplay to be too slow.

However, those aren't areas that Carmack is actively involved in. He is an engine developer, and as far as the engine is concerned, idTech5 is pretty impressive. Hence why I thought it was unfair to criticize Carmack over RAGE.
Only thing I found the engine to lack was dynamic environments since very few objects in the environment were movable or destructible.

So yea, hopefully they make a better game overall in their next project... and maybe have an actual ending too.

aliengmr4274d ago

RAGE is an okay game with so-so visuals, absolutely nothing about it was spectacular. If that was the best they could do I wonder what Doom 4 will be like.

Vynzent4271d ago

Rage showed his true ability? Lol, you're a fucking moron. Rage wasn't even close to idSoftware working their best. It was a warmup, getting to know the engine.

Of course, I don't expect you or the other morons to know anything about that, you guys don't know shit about game design.

What's cool is you can see some of the animations they kept and revised for 2016.

nirwanda1211d ago

When you strip everything back you can really see how great the animation is.
It's amazing how far games have come.

glenn19791211d ago

For me its always interesting to see some prototype of a game of something else and see the final product on why they go another direction in the end

RaidenBlack1211d ago

My favorite is the MGS:Rising vs MGR:Revengeance.(I preferred the Kojima's one)
Another interesting one is Splinter Cell Conviction Concept vs Retail

spicelicka1211d ago

I don't see what is "COD-like" here? Just because there's 2 seconds footage with ironsight?

Concertoine1211d ago

The devs were openly going for the cinematic shooter style that was popular in the years this was developed. COD-like Doom was pretty much the pitch.

Fluke_Skywalker1211d ago

Looks pish, no wonder it got canned.

Every Doom Game Ever

Whilst the FPS genre has since had a tonne of fantastic franchises, such as Quake, Unreal and Serious Sam, Doom remains at the top of the pile, and has one of the best comeback stories in video game history. Doom is almost 30 years running, and has even bled into other mediums such as feature films and novels. As it has been going for so long, there have been a large number of entries in the series, and there are probably a few you never played. This is every Doom game ever.

Why Development Stopped On DOOM 4

According to ID Executive Producer Marty Stratton, DOOM 4 was scrapped because "it was more 'DOOM' in name than really anything."

Dabigsiebowski1514d ago

Because they wanted to punish John Carmack.

AK911514d ago

From reports apparently Doom 4 was shaping up to be COD but set in the DOOM universe, honestly really glad that didn’t happen.

Profchaos1514d ago

Pretty much they wanted to make it to meet what was selling at the time and in doing so it lost the soul of what makes doom doom.

MadLad1513d ago

Even Doom 3 did that, despite being a solid game all the same. Not mind blowing, in my opinion, but a solid title.

1513d ago
Segata1513d ago

Because it was Call of Duty with generic demons on Earth. Looked worse than the 2009 Wolfenstein. They made the right call.
