Why Newell deems Windows 8 a catastrophe

Hooked Gamers writes "Gabe Newell, managing director of Steam and (arguably) savior of PC gaming, lashed out at Windows 8 yesterday, saying that Windows 8 is “a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space”. As he did not explain himself very well, it took a while for things to sink in, but sink in it did."

Sounds like he deems himself so vital to Western software he tried to muscle his way in MSFT Corp trying to dictate MSFT's strategy as if he was a partner, there was a falling out.
Sounds like he wanted to merge ideas and was rejected. Now he is an enemy competitor on some level in his mind. MSFT likes control of their products they would never allow for his open ideas etc.

He's mad because he wanted to use MSFT to launch his ideas. The MOD fights were just the beginning of his true intent and agenda. Piggy backing off of MSFT's resources(naive)

Reverent4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

Wow, just wow. I don't even know what to say to that. Just, do some actual research on Gabe.

Yeah, he's made mistakes, but everything he's done lately has made up for it all. I mean, come on; Steam.

Amazingmrbrock4284d ago

His big problem if you read the article is microsoft is closing windows 8 to unsigned programs.

That means pretty much no unsigned exe.s or .bats of any kind essentially. No custom drivers, no emulators, no game mods or unofficial patches that install themselves. No anything unless it passes through microsofts certification and is downloaded through their marketplace.

Letros4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

You are thinking of Windows RT, which is different than Windows 8.

It will still be possible release "uncertified" programs (apps) on W8, however they will not be publishable through the Windows Marketplace, nor receive a Windows Certification Stamp(whoopdie doo). Steam will be unaffected by Windows 8, it's not "illegal"...the author needs to do some research before publishing FUD.

esemce4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

@ greenpowerz Sounds like you know f*ck all and did not read the article idiot.

greenpowerz4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

WTF are you going on about? Anyways I'm talking about the evolution of the relationship between the 2 parties over the years lol.

Gabe tried to influence the way MSFT ran XBL for his own interest. I can see how you're so defensive having his platform on PS3. MSFT wants to control security and their own business interests, obviously having their own plans in this segment of this market.

Windows 8 will have built-in game capabilities across the board, built in digital games console and marketplace to built in Xbox console system software(no need for xbox hardware, use pc the play xbox)

Let me go research Gabe's past strong opinions on past MSFT OS's ;)

#5 LastOfGen is right!

Bigpappy4284d ago

I like Gabe. But he was saying all the same things about the PS3, then folded later when M$ rejected is ideas for opening their system. Gabe is an opportunist through and through.

This does not make him a bad person, he just would like to have more access than M$ is willing to give to their huge userbase.

greenpowerz4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

I have nothing against him. He was vocal about it talking angry MSFT wouldn't fold.

" Newell spent thirteen years working for Microsoft Corporation, ultimately becoming a "Microsoft Millionaire". Newell has described himself as "producer on the first three releases of Windows"

FEELS HE IS ENTITLED TO SUGGEST MSFT STRATEGY OR TRY TO FORCE WITH AAA SOFTWARE

"Newell and another Microsoft employee, Mike Harrington, left Microsoft to found Valve in 1996. [3] He and Harrington used their money to fund Valve through the development of Half-Life. "

STARTED HIS OWN BUSINESS ON HIS OWN MAKING HIM BELIEVE HE HAS EVEN MORE LEVERAGE

" But Microsoft isn't quite so trusting, and Valve CEO Gabe Newell wants to change that with the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. "The main thing is having Microsoft get comfortable with it and let us do it," Newell said regarding the difficult task of selling the idea of Steam for the Xbox. "Right now, there's a huge amount of updates and free content we've been able to deliver to people who have The Orange Box that we haven't been able to deliver to the Xbox because of the restrictions that have been placed on us on Xbox Live."

THINKING HE KNOWS BETTER THAN MSFT AND WANTS THEM TO ADOPT HIS OWN IDEAS BUT HAS HIS OWN BUSINESS AGENDA OPENING THE FLOOD GATES FOR FREE AND CHARGED CONTENT

There are many more statements from Gabe. I remember he was having a heart attack about not getting his way. He started his businesses and thought he was important enough to dictate MSFT based on his agenda thinking he could piggy back his businesses on MSFT's infrastructure and resources. Now MSFT has a OS coming out that is a threat.

What company would open the flood gates for another maketplace on their platform when It's a primary product of the host platform?

Naturally he'd love

@chunky

yeah, he looks so foolish,

"Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve Corporation, is one of the richest people on the planet. With an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion dollars, he ranks 854th out of 1,226 global billionaires."

dudes like santa claus, giving out tasty games for practically free

steam is hands down the best gaming platform, better than psn, xboxlive, wiiware or any other pretenders out there

steam features mods, developer help, forumns, cross game, cross task, multitasking chat, a store with UNBEATABLE prices, news, patch notes, betas, free to play, upload your videos and pics, in game screenshots and recording. film editing software, indie dev platforms with peer review, free sdk's

all that and more in one slick interface that uses allmost ZERO system resourses

now look at psn and xboxlive

they look worse than a vhs does to bluray

Gabe shits better things out than xbox live and psn

Mustang300C20124284d ago

Wow another Fluffer here folks.

Veni Vidi Vici4284d ago

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Gabe is the best thing to happen to PC gaming in the past 10 years. Heck, maybe even longer.

Not only does Valve create some of the best, well supported games, they treat both the consumer and developer better than any company I can think of. That's the reason he won't make Valve a publicly traded company. He knows investors will ruin everything just to make a buck. He's more concerned with doing things correctly than what makes the most money.

WeskerChildReborned4284d ago

Yea Gabe is a pretty cool guy even though i don't agree with everything he says.

DudeJets4284d ago

Windows 8 is horrible to look at and I do quite honestly feel disappointed after win7

JBSleek4284d ago

What he is really trying to say is Windows 8 poses a threat to what I am doing as a company is doing with Windows Store which will likely be the first location consumers go for games and services.

So as a business man be backs up Linux a platform which doesn't have that and he can do whatever he so fits to do. Well that doesn't make sense as Linux holds less than 1% of the market so it's kinda laughable.

Everyone hates when people and figures paint a product as a doom before it has come out or has it's time to shine but are easy to call Windows 8 a fail and it is justified? I just don't understand.

sjaakiejj4284d ago

"people and figures paint a product as a doom before it has come out or has it's time to shine"

"Well that doesn't make sense as Linux holds less than 1% of the market so it's kinda laughable. "

Isn't that like hypocritical, considering you just did the same as the people you complain about?

CyberCam4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

LOL! Very observant sjaakiejj... ohh the irony!

"Linux holds less than 1%"... please provide proof sir. I love people that pull numbers out of thin air and those that find some form of out dated data. There's really no way for anyone to actually get accurate numbers on linux use worldwide, period!

JBSleek4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

Linux has been out for years it isn't new at all. As Windows 8 comes out October 26.

So how did I do the same? I said a fact and figure not a random doom comment.

@CyberCam http://www.bgr.com/2012/07/...

I have facts and numbers Windows own over 90% as Linux falls under the dotted so as I said 1%.

sjaakiejj4283d ago (Edited 4283d ago )

"So how did I do the same?"

Because you're painting a product as doomed (laughable) before it's had it's time to shine (thanks to newfound support by Valve).

Also

"Because Linux desktop distributions are not usually distributed by retail sale like other operating systems, there are no sales numbers that indicate the number of users. One downloaded file may be used to create many CDs and each CD may be used to install the operating system on multiple computers. On the other hand the file might be used only for a test and the installation erased soon after. Due to these factors estimates of current Linux desktop often rely on webpage hits by computers identifying themselves as running Linux. The use of these statistics has been criticized as unreliable and as underestimating Linux use"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

lastofgen4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

He might as well say that windows 8 threatens to disrupt his company's business and revenue as a result of a more unified windows experience. He's just trying to promote his company's business, that's all. That's the only main reason he deems windows 8 catastrophic.

Why bring this to anyone’s attention? It’s his life and he could outlive any of us for the matter.

Reminds me of a story where an old lady had two doctors tell here that if she didn’t quit drinking Dr. Pepper it was going to kill here. And she lived to tell the story of how she’s 104 years old and that both doctors had died.

RhinoGamer88152d ago

Senator Asks Gabe Newell Why Steam Hosts So Much Neo-Nazi Content

New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan sent Valve a letter decrying the vast amount of white supremacist imagery in its user generated content and community spaces.

blackblades489d ago

I would like a response from him, they should crack down on that to an extent. If they supporting that crap get rid of it of its killing Nazi I'm down with that.

SullysCigar489d ago

Like the Azov Regiment that our taxes are supporting?

Nazism has always provided us with cannon fodder in games, but I don't expect COD will tackle that particular hot potato any time soon.

blackblades489d ago

just_looken488d ago

How about pro communism then? or pro french? or pro British? heck why not pro steam 19th century American games?.

Every country in some form of extent had its genocide and or racism period's some still are its part of history and one of humanity's flaws.

We should be teaching everyone though media about universally adapting equality though education and reform heck skim off the trillion-airs/billionaires for starters they can support the education bill.

but na its one week pro this next week anti that all the dam time.

PaulFiend488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

Stop spreading russian-nazi propaganda.

SullysCigar488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

^ @PaulFiend, sadly it's an unwelcome fact. I understand your cognitive dissonance. You can be opposed to the Russian invasion, but also recognise that these neo nazis have/had power.

It's acknowledged in every facet of the media - left, right or centric, social media, Wikipedia, everywhere - and not a fact check in sight, because unfortunately it's the truth.

If you want a link, pick your poison: CNN, The FT, The Independent, Fox News... Even Zelensky has acknowledged this in mainstream news interviews, because the Azov Battalion flag and the soldiers being covered in swastika tattoos made it unavoidable.

Conversely, I'm happy for you to fact check me. I'm just saying things aren't quite as black and white as we'd prefer them to be. I am as anti-war as anyone else here - it's disgusting.

EDIT @Below: stop putting words in my mouth. I think the muck should have been cleared out first and THEN whatever necessary action should be taken to secure the region. This includes using tax payer money from the West.

And, while we're at it, we should help the Syrians too. Those people are suffering unimaginably right now.

Killer2020UK488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

If they're getting funded it's by proxy of funding Ukraine to fight off an invasion of their country by Russia. The fact you lead with the old tax line implies you think public money shouldn't be spent on defending a democratic nation in Europe who's existence or potential eradication would have serious ramifications for the rest of the Western world. Thinking it's a waste of money is a good way of showing you don't know jack shit about foreign policy and the consequences of getting it wrong. Honestly, you may as well be cosying up to Iran who let me tell you, do not care for you or your country.

Why have you always got to be an edgelord Sully? It's an article about Steam FFS. Why being this irrelevant whataboutery to the comments section?

Father__Merrin488d ago

Absolutely Ukraine has always had a nazi supremisism problem. And now we have to support them guess what I don't.... All azov aidar Stephen bandera followers are scum, its not Russian propaganda it's actually real if you start to look into it. So this alleged senetor first has to question supporting fascists of Ukraine before pointing his nose towards steam

Killer2020UK488d ago

Maybe you should lead with those views first then instead of solely your concerns about tax payers money going to neo nazi groups. I think you have to be more aware of what you imply when making those statements. Nobody else here knows the context you hold in your head, just you. We have to go by what you write exclusive of your intentions.

Killer2020UK488d ago

Let's not overlook the neo Nazi groups fighting for Russia if we're getting onto this topic...

Zombieburger638487d ago

Maybe you should go visit the torture chambers the Russians use on civilians. Including women and children.

GhostTurtle487d ago (Edited 487d ago )

You folks denying the Azov Regiment need to get off social and mainstream media and do some goddamn self research....

@Killer
When has our tax dollars gone and supported said neo nazi groups in Russia?

Huey_My_D_Long487d ago

I don't like the Azov battalion and yes ukraine has a problem with racism...
But Putin Invading Ukraine for that reason is like if we invade Mexico for police brutality...
Alot of the east European continent is pretty racist, ukraine, Russia.Putin
Doesn't validate a invasion

Majin-vegeta487d ago

Lol the azov regiment is not Nazi affiliated.
https://www.google.com/amp/...

fr0sty487d ago (Edited 487d ago )

That's like suggesting that if we get invaded, our allies should wait until they've cleared out our white supremacist problem before they offer us any help... You stop genocidal slaughter by the invaders first, then you focus on weeding out the crap. These aren't nazis we're giving weapons to, who are using those weapons to further their ideology. These people are fighting for their lives...

Not even Putin could stick to the Nazi distraction, he's had to give up using that as justification for his war... The only purpose it currently serves is to further this genocide by discouraging people from supporting the innocent civilians who couldn't care less about the Azov Regiment's questionable connections to neo-nazis... Our citizens would deserve such help even if Britain's media started singling out members of our special forces troops who were white supremacists... or bringing up the white supremacist ties some members of a certain political party have... we are in no place to point fingers there, we have them among our ranks as well... and while I do think that any further help with rebuilding after the war should be contingent upon them weeding out such corruption, as long as they are under attack, they need our help.

Guitardr85486d ago

@Just_Lookin...there's a big difference between the the Nazis and the other things you listed. By saying pro British or Pro France I can't tell if youre referring to the country as a whole or specific times in their history like colonial England or revolutionary France. If it's the former, comparing a politic movement against an entire country really isn't apples to apples. Secondly, while you're absolutely right that a lot of course tries have had bad examples in their past, Nazi Germany is something that still carries a lot of weight with the alt right political people today. It's still a dangerous entity itself and needs to be contained, especially when we are seeing so much of the same kind of hatred and bigotry that allowed it to take root in the first place. As Im sure you know, Hitler was elected as Chancellor in Germany before he dissolved the Weimar...

Killer2020UK487d ago

What are you advocating then? That you don't fund Ukraine at all because there are neo Nazi militias also fighting against the Russians? I don't know about you but the best place for neo Nazis I can think of is on the front line where they'll likely serve a purpose and be decimated in the process.

SullysCigar487d ago

It's interesting how quick you are to fill in the blanks and decide other peoples' opinions are morally dubious, right before advocating killing human beings.

The best place for a neo nazi is jail. The front line is not the best place for anyone, because war is pointless to all but the elite few profiteering from it.

Panhandler487d ago

You advocating for the murder of a person for their ideologies opens the door for the polar opposite of the Ideology you're wanting to kill. Here we go, the opposite of National Socialism is Communism. Since the Communist Bolsheviks of Russia killed upwards of over 60 million Christians from 1917 to 1954. That's not even bringing up Mao in China. From the Bolshevik Revolution to the Armenian Genocide to the Holodomor Holocaust. So who was behind the mass killing of Christians?

David R. Francis, United States ambassador in Russia, warned in a January 1918 dispatch to Washington: "The Bolshevik leaders here, most of whom are Jews and 90 percent of whom are returned exiles, care little for Russia or any other country but are internationalists and they are trying to start a worldwide social revolution." The Netherlands' ambassador in Russia, Oudendyke, made much the same point a few months later: "Unless Bolshevism is nipped in the bud immediately, it is bound to spread in one form or another over Europe and the whole world as it is organized and worked by Jews who have no nationality, and whose one object is to destroy for their own ends the existing order of things." "The Bolshevik Revolution," declared a leading American Jewish community paper in 1920, "was largely the product of Jewish thinking, Jewish discontent, Jewish effort to reconstruct."

History you have been removed from 109 countries over 300 times. The only European country not to Exile Jews was the Netherlands because when Jews moved there in the 1600's the Dutch used Jews slave knowledge in South Africa. Which almost all slave ships were Jewish owned. You're history's greatest slave traders, being able to move between both Christian and Muslim countries. The Jewish Golden age was during the African Moors occupation of Western Europe for a 400 years. Where they Dominated the slave trade.

If not for the Reconquista they would have taken more land and finally was expunged during the Spanish Inquisition. Which made Jews move to Brazil which has one of the largest Jewish populations. This is why 95% of all African Slaves during the slave trade years went to Brazil. But most died due to the extreme conditions their masters put them through.

Albert Pike Jewish Mason and Confederate General was the founding father of the KKK.

The Blood Libel the ancient past time where Jews drain the blood of Christian babies to create matzah bread. The old tell that started Dracula
Also in Bram Stokers 1931 film Dracula  Bela Legosi wore the Star of David. Which is the star of David is Moloch symbol and Moloch was the Pagan God of child sacrifice.... Now the Masonic Secret Societies do this same thing but it's called adrenochrome.

"A Jew will always tell you what happened to him, but he'll never tell you why" - Old Arab Proverb

Look into how Nathan Rothchild took control of the England's Money after the battle of waterloo. Or how they took control of America with the federal reserve. Wars give Bankers power. Jews Control every Faucet of Life. Banks, Media, Entertainment so on.

SullysCigar487d ago

Thanks for that interesting synopsis. It's nice to read something thought-provoking from someone who has bothered to do their research, rather than just get attacked for saying an unpopular truth.

I believe the people Oudendyke was referring to in the quote you shared was the Askenazis / Khazarians.

The symbolism you mentioned was interesting too, and that's another element that exposes the Azov Regiment (even after their 2014 'rebranding').

blackblades487d ago (Edited 487d ago )

Wow nice text book, I forgot to add killing Nazis in a video game only. I dont wanna see any kind of these nazi, Nazi supporting group bundle in a place where they dont belong. You don't know what you're talking about either. Ukrainians have oppressed and killed thousands of Russians living in Ukraine....there ...as you can see nobody has the full picture.

There's more nuance to history than you think. Certain areas of Ukraine used to belong to Russia. Those same areas are full of Russians that aren't treated particularly well.

DrDoomer487d ago (Edited 487d ago )

nazis in Russia and the US are seen as misguided fools and are frowned upon by society. Nazis in ukraine (especially on the west side) are seen as heroes. You have parents proudly posting on social media how they indoctrinate their children into being stepan bandera worshippers. There is no comparison, and I'm not sure why you're trying to make one anyway. The topic is how these dirty politicians like using nazis as scapegoats, yet if you look a bit deeper, you find out that not only do nazis have nothing to do with the things they're attacking, these politicians are actually in league with real nazis.
