The Year Ahead: Xbox 360 Gaming in 2008

2007 may have been a banner year for the industry, but because of the fierce holiday competition, many games were pushed back into the slower calendar months by nervous publishers. Because of this, on top of the already-planned '08 releases, next year is looking to be nearly as strong.

And while PC gaming may not be dead, console gaming shows no sign of letting up. Here's a look at the Xbox 360 releases for the next 12 months, a host of sequels and remakes and original titles. Check them all out and mark your gaming calendars.

That's a pretty strong array of titles, although the exclusives look a little weak. Does anyone know if there are any rumoured, unannounced projects that could bolster that lineup?

TheMART5977d ago

I don't know how you view games, but:

Ninja Gaiden 2
Halo Wars
Fable 2
Too Human
Alan Wake
Splinter Cell: Conviction

and the one not in here, but surely coming:

Gears of War 2 at Christmas 2008

Already sound like pretty strong exclusives to me. And I'm pretty sure there will be more. Those alone already though will cost some good bucks

allatain5977d ago

I don't think they can do GOW2 in 2008, its too early and too fast a push ESP after they just did UT3. I don't want to play a half baked game, I would actually prefer to wait till 2009 if they can recreate the game in a way that parallels the original

Hapimeses5977d ago

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten about GoW2, that does make a difference. The first game was a good laugh.

And I wasn't saying the exclusive line-up doesn't have quality next year -- it clearly does -- I was simply suggesting that, to my eye, it looked a little weak when compared to the alternatives.

However, as I said, the complete line-up looks pretty strong, and will be enough to keep any gamer happy for the year.

TheMART5977d ago

@ allatain

So why could Epic get UT3 out one year after Gears of War released then?
They know the engine now, they can do it. Furthermore, Gears will probably at least be a trilogy, they will want to get those 3 parts on the 360 within the total life span of about 7 years. In that logic, Gears of War 3 will be released in 2010 at latest 2011. It's like this: It's about the biggest IP's as holidays system seller. Christmas 2006 had Gears 1, Christmas 2007 has Halo 3/Mass Effect, Christmas 2008 will have Gears 2, Christmas 2009 will have Halo 4, Christmas 2010 will have Gears 3. And ofcourse some of those games still in development that'll add like Mass Effect did this year. But still those main hitters will be out for sure.

Panthers5977d ago

im pretty sure UT3 was in the works before GoW released. They showed it at E3 a while back (1-2 yrs)

They are still working on UT3 for the 360 so I doubt GoW2 will be out, but who knows. Maybe they have been working on that too for a while.

PS3n3605977d ago

I think ms will or at least should push epic to get the 3rd installment of gears on the next xbox. That would be a guaranteed system seller. I know I would buy it, what a way to launch a console with a heavy hitter. As long as they didnt run into supply issues. What do you think?

salgoods5977d ago

but I see no system sellers. At all

allatain5976d ago

dude thats exactly what I mean, I love the graphics in UT3 but honestly I can't get over the gameplay, it just isn't as paced as it was in the original, it just takes to long to get around maps sometimes, it can feel a little cramped for movement or space for shooting, in the other UT games, you feel like you have mobility, its like they gave up gameplay for graphics, the game is still good, just can't get over the loss of gameplay

Bubble Buddy5976d ago

So hard to find a great game with no sequel or trilogies now...all cause of the cash. cough cough Mario.

Lord20085977d ago

Still no Dead Rising 2 god i want a sequel to that SOOOOOOOOOOO BAD, and am i the only 360 owner who hates Ninja Gaiden.

salgoods5977d ago

count? i hated ninja gaiden on that as well

InMyOpinion5976d ago

I hated it at first cause I found it to be extremely difficult. But I gave it some time and started realising how you're supposed to play it and then it got much more enjoyable.

felidae5977d ago

the 360's games are just .... COLD!

no diversity in games ... all the same.

now the ps3 has enough games to choose from and there are much more diverse games than on the 360. plus multiplatform games are starting to look really better on the ps3.

so who cares about the xbox 36zzzz ZZZ zzzz

Bladestar5977d ago

That's what you all say about 2007... wow.. all the PS3 games... mmm... the xbox 360 is dead in 2007... and xbox 360 games are still b!tch slapping the PS3 games... The PS3 had a Shock and Awe in terms of games during 2007.. Bomba all over the place compared to xbox 360 games... mmm you think the xbox 360 will not do the same in 2008? why? because the PS3 can't get any worst? mmm.. yeah... every body though the same about 2007. it didn't happen.

R M Spender5976d ago

what ps3 games? ff or metal gear? gt? great....thats about it, big deal. bet they make metal gear for xbox anyway. tekken is one that iam jealous for but you gotta be nuts to think ps3 is a better console and most of you ps3 freaks on here are as far as i can tell from your comments. you all got ripped off.

Salvadore5977d ago

The 360 line-up might not be as strong as 07, but it still looks great and we don't know if MS has anything wrapped up under its sleeve (Banjo or GOW2).
I don't really see the need for people bashing 360's line-up or any other consoles line up.

Panthers5977d ago

I dont see any reason to bash either, but people sure do love to. Go to a PS3 story and take a look. Tons of bashing

navig8or5977d ago

The potential for PS3 in undeniable by even the most blind fanboy, but, do not deny Alan Wake, Too Human etc.. The X360 does have many games for2008, many I'm sure like BioShock which we won't hear too much about till they are ready...I do not doubt that PS3 is going to have some killer apps, but so is X360, this is going to be fun :)

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing694h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos45m ago(Edited 42m ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

That genuinely, genuinely sucks. The reboot has clear flaws, but it really felt like a solid first step for this team to receive *greater* investment.

XiNatsuDragnel11h ago

Alone in the dark is a fun game so that's unfortunate

CrimsonWing695h ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the norm after a project is done?

Terry_B3h ago

That's standard. Teams are together for a Project, after its done some..and sometimes most devs are fired until the next Project is in the works and people are needed again. Only the core members stay in the time between the hot phase of the game development.

CrimsonWing691h ago

What’s annoying is people don’t understand how contractors work, either. All of this is uninformed knee-jerk reactions without any understanding of how employment works in this industry. There are key developers and staff that stay with a studio/publisher, but often times it’s a hire per project and then seeking new employment for a project. That’s how it’s always been…

Now is the Best Time to Get This Incredible RPG Bundle on Steam

If you are looking for an awesome RPG, look no further. Steam is offering a significant discount on its Fallout Franchise Bundle.

SimpleSlave19h ago

"You can get all Fallout games in a bundle at a significant 20% discount on Steam. Individually, all these games add up to $244.91. With the discount, you can get them all for $195.91. That is $49 less than the original price. Quite a significant discount for such a popular franchise."

😊 😂 🤣 😐 - But why?

Just wait for a sale and get most if not all of it for a fraction of that price.

20% off...lol

Tacoboto18h ago

The games were just on a real sale over the last week or two for the show promotion. Fallout 4 was $10, 3 was $5, NV was cheap as heck too.

So what the heck is this

Inverno18h ago

The original games have been given out for free by Amazon for GOG and Epic, 76 is free now on Amazon if you have prime, Epic has also given out new Vegas for free and 4 has gone down to pretty cheap prices. 194 bucks is a total ripoff when you can get these games individually for less. Don't forget cd keys might sell em for a dollar less at times too. Come on man, us cheapskates won't touch anything near or above 100 lolz

isarai18h ago

Bro that's a ridiculous ripoff are you kidding me? 🤣
