What’s The Most Overrated Game You’ve Ever Played?

Uproxx writes: Recently, I finally got a chance to play Assassin’s Creed II. It sold millions of copies, gained widespread critical acclaim, and… I found myself wondering why.

Damn I have played so many so Ill say a few Mass Effect 3 my friend finally got me to play them and I was like WTF just happen never care for any of the characters and never got into the games so the ending meh. Uncharted 3 finish it and never went back I played the mp like 3 times, also Skyward Sword at first was fun and then the back and forward, back and froward got boring really fast but i still did finish it.

... but I never really got into Uncharted, even after all the praise it received, and after REALLY wanting to like it.

In the end, while gorgeous, I just didn't really care for the character (Drake), and I felt the gameplay became quite boring and predictable (I'm not a fan of cover-shooters).

Bunch of bad guys, shoot at them from behind cover, sometimes dodge a grenade, then go for a section of climbing and jumping, until you come across bad guys again, then more climbing and jumping, etc etc. It had a few change-ups like the car-section, but still...

Also, Halo.

I got the 1st Halo with the original Xbox, but stopped played when The Flood came (Library level). Very annoying. I'm not a big sci-fi fan anyway, and didn't care AT ALL for Master Chief.

Also tried Halo 2 which I bought cheap, but even though I thought the set-pieces were quite impressive, I really didn't care enough to keep playing it.

I really need to find a game and gameplay challenging, the characters interesting, and the story entertaining, to keep playing.

Those game mentioned are just a bit too lineair for me. I need a bit more freedom.

I DID love GTA4, I DID love Assassin's Creed 2, I loved Yakuza 4, and right now I'm really getting into Dark Souls (which is also a bit lineair, but at least very challenging and gives you some freedom in how you build your characters and the weapons you choose)

Loved Uncharted 1 & 2, but I was indifferent towards number 3. It didn't feel like much of an improvement & the story of the 2nd game was far more interesting.

I agree with the author's perspective on ACII, I was left quite underwhelmed when I played it. Infamous was the better game (probably the best sandbox game of '09).

I'll agree with Uncharted, it's really only overrated around here though (you know how N4G is), although quite a few reviewers tend to go a little over-board about it. I loved the first one, I felt the second wasn't particularly memorable and couldn't even finish the 3rd (and I didn't even care).

But I also found Dark Souls to be a tad overrated. I'll try it a second time when it releases on PC next month, but my first time around it failed to grab me, even though Demon's Souls managed to captivate me for about 40 hours. I'd say that's a more controversial opinion :p

FFX is a big gripe of mine, that is without a doubt the most overrated game I've ever played. FFVIII was quite overrated too, although I think history has treated that game somewhat justly (it never ranks in any FF top 5s, really), despite reviewers giving it 9s and 10s at the time. Kingdom Hearts too. FFX and Kingdom Hearts managed to make me quit JRPGs for about 4 or 5 years. That is the depth of my hate for them.

Anyway, fun topic. For every disagree I get, I shall donate 1 kernel of popcorn to my mouth.

For those saying Uncharted games are over rated, the awards speak volume. Doesn't mean you and a bunch of people don't like it, it's automatically over rated. Get over yourselves! I don't get into Halo amd Mario too but I don't consider them over rated. Milking, yeah but never over rated!

I dont mind uncharted's high scores but I generally find the "perfect, best game this gen, amazing story" claims to be highly exaggerated. I liked UC2 a lot, but would never overpraise the gameplay and story. For me:

AC always had sloppy controls that would make you jump in random directions during missions or chase scenes.

I still enjoy AC (at discounted prices like the $15 PSN+ Brotherhood deal), but the only good things about Revelations were Altair's scenes and the addition of the Stalkers.

And GTA IV is the worst one in the series and a serious downgrade from San Andreas. I said it.

Halo Reach for me. I'll never understand the high reviews scores this received as I felt it was by far the worst of the series. I love Halo, I love the universe, I love the gameplay (although never a fan of the mp online) and I just felt like Bungie phoned it in. The new weapons were uninspired (alien shotgun? How original) the missions where simple "Run from point a to point b pretty much in a straight line" and the story was non-existent without a single, memorable moment with the exception of that "FU" ending. The whole thing just left me perplexed and frustrated considering how much I enjoyed the previous installments in the franchise. It was completely underwhelming and before someone says "Yeah, but did you read the books," No. I didn't read the books, nor should I have to read a book for a game in order to enjoy it. A game's story should be able to stand on it's own, and Reach's faceless grunts just didn't do it for me compared to the rich, sci-fi epic I had played before.

Such a perfect article for this cesspool called N4G. For me it's Halo 1&2 and Assassin's Creed 1. Playing those games made me wonder what people saw in them. I played Halo 1&2 for free (borrowed XBox) and still couldn't make myself finish them. At least with Call of Duty, I understand what people like about it even if I don't like it myself. LA Noire was another highly reviewed game I had to make myself finish.

Last would be Call of Duty MW2. It made me not purchase the third iteration in the Moder Warfare series. Turned out I was right not purchasing MW3 after my brother told me it was a huge mess.

Below average character customization, even for just the head.
Below average third-person shooter.
Below average RPG elements (after turning it into a TPS).
Average animations.

So what is this game being praised on again? Oh right, story!
Might as well make it into a movie or novel, instead of basing the whole CATCH of the series on BS choice making. It's better off as an interactive Sci Fi story.

Skyrim:

Simplistic and average combat.
Forgettable story, devoid of any sense of urgency, drama or emotion.
Lack of focus.
Bland, dead characters.
Below average animations.
You're choices and accomplishments don't seem to matter.
Boring and repetitive fetch quests.

The catch? Massive, pretty and landscapes to pointlessly wonder around and level up in.
Boring IMO.

Fallout 3:

Also boring and suffers from similar issues mentioned in Skyrim above.

I agree Alpha, Red dead, I actually put up with it for quite a while, generally found it boring and tedious, riding a horse is not nearly as fun as speeding through traffic or flying a helicopter, which is what kept my interest in GTA(even though I also got bored of GTA4)

Also with Uncharted I agree, Great games. But overrated, definitely not the best games ever created. Not close again imo.

Now...Skyrim, holy ****. How in the world did it get so much praise? It's so formulaic for an open world game, it's got nothing on Fallout 3 or NV. It has zero unique quests. Go to dungeon/kill draugr or spiders/defeat level scaled boss at end/ collect dragon shout and quest item. And the dragons were such a disappointment. They were just an annoyance, had zero challenge to them etc. Never mind the vast array of average features/gameplay/combat that it contains. The only + it's got is a nice looking open world to explore. That's all it's got, if you want an exploration game, get Skyrim. Want a fun RPG? look somewhere else

For those saying that Uncharted doesn't deserve the praise are just in denial. Yea the story and gamplay don't bring nothing new but that's not what gets the praise. The praise comes from the amazimg cinematic experience,amazing voice acting that helps make the story believable and intense. I mean the plot of the stories are genetic but little things add up that make it amazing. Character development, chemistry betwen characters etc. Uncharted 2 deserves the praise that it gets. The Uncharted series received a lot of awards from reviewers etc and a few people found it didn't live up to all the hype, hence why they think it's overrated.

I loved Uncharted 2, finished it in 2 days, couldn't put the pad down, but I got bored of part 3 pretty quickly (can't explain why, just did) so I'd go with Uncharted 3 as my choice.

Uncharted does deserve praise for it's graphics and cinematic's.. No denying that.

But I think from a perspective of game play and overall fun factor it is s bit over rated. I mean I enjoyed the eye candy but once I finished the first game I could never get myself into playing it again.. From a perspective for actual game enjoyment in this type of genre, I think the original tomb raider has Uncharted beat by quiet a big margin. Tomb Raider is a game I poured a lot more time into when it first came out.

I loved Uncharted 2, and would probably consider it Naughty Dog's greatest game, even over my favourite Crash Bandicoot title.

On the other hand, I found Uncharted 3 to be a regressive game in every way, and in no way close to being as good as 2. More bullet sponge enemy types, tedious early levels and an ending that almost directly pastes the Uncharted 2 climax.

You might think differently, so be it. Just don't force your opinion onto other people.

Completely disagree. Halo Combat Evolved sold me onto the original Xbox and I found the campaign to be amazing. The story, the level design, the weapons and the controls of the vehicles....it was a breath of fresh air.

The story was brilliant, the setting of a ring shaped planet that turns out to be a weapon. The enemies, the covenant were so cool! The Elites were imposing enemy commanders, the grunts funny and original cannon fodder but deadly in numbers, the jackals with their shields, the huge tank like aliens whose name I forget! Then you got the flood who were terrifying. THEN the sentinels!

So all of a sudden you have a four way battle between the covenant, flood, sentinels and humans! All in some epic battlefields coupled with, what was at the time, amazing AI in some awe inspiring levels with great music.

Compound this with the fact that you could only carry two weapons at a time, a fresh concept at the time and the weapons themselves were brilliant and original. The needler for example! Also the plasma pistol you power up, the really cool assault rifle and OP pistol. Even the sniper rifle and plasma repeater susceptible to overheating. Just brilliant.

THEN throw in some amazing and original vehicles into the mix. That in itself was a new standard for console fps'. And these weren't just any vehicles. Look at them; the Warthog is an instant classic. The ghost, the banshee....you don't see originality like that these days. THEN consider the original and.quite ingenious way you controlled the vehicles: via the camera! And it works really well whilst enhancing the cinematic value of the sequence.

Halo is the definition of a killer app. Comparing it to the likes of Red Faction is completely missing the point. People like to scoff at it and call it overrated but the fact remains that it revolutionised console fps gaming, in particular its sequel and online multiplayer.

The fact that it pretty much single handedly made the Xbox the success it is today speaks volumes. Without Halo, there most likely wouldn't have been a 360 today. Legendary game.

I beat Uncharted 3 for the second time just last weekend, and it's definitely my least favourite of the series.

I love all the games in the series (it's my favorite franchise this generation), but I agree the first game was a lot worse than the others.

But, to me, the best one is Brotherhood. It just has so much more to do, with the assassins you hire, and the great, very original, multiplayer (and I usually hate multiplayer). Revelations was good, but not as much as Brotherhood. I hated the Desmond/Portal sections and bomb crafting is just boring.

2nd one was WAY better than the first. They had a good idea, but it hadn't been polished up yet. With II, they fixed a lot and the game was on a whole new level. I thought Brotherhood made further improvements, but probably had a bit too much busy-work to hide the fact there isn't that much going on. Still enjoyed it a lot. Revelations though, even less going on and it seemed like they reached too far in adding new stuff, and just didn't work.

Brotherhood was far superior, at least on the PC. Proper menus for once, the combat actually flows better, and keyboard buttons are labeled.

i was recently talking to my friend about GTA 4 he's not much of a gamer but he got me thinking, GTA 4 was widely praised as being "flawless" and while that is true to a degree there are no real major flaws what the game does have are shit loads of these little flaws every game has a minor annoyance but i have alot of minor gripes with the game e.g.

.why does Niko always fly out of the window in a car crash doesn't he wear a SEATBELT??

.why do the missions get so repetitive in the 1st hour of gameplay, the only mission that truly stood out for me was the bank robbery

.why didn't the game expand or refine the rpg elements that were present in gta san andreas?

.why do I have to tap x/a to run i didnt have to that in SA/VC/3 why would i want to walk at 0 mph ?

I did not care for the RPG stuff in San Andreas, and i remember holding a button to run in those as well. The cover system was so much better here and so was loosing the wanted level. it was the first GTA that i found myself not wanting to cheat in because of getting shot by someone i can't see.

yes driving physics took a little to get used to and you could always not pick up the phone. BRUCIE was pure gold though and so was Little Jacob.

as for the seatbelts, i guess niko didn't care for them but you would only fly though the window on cheap cars or if you were going at top speed in the really good ones.

Also all of you that thought GTA4 was overrated probably never played THE BALLAD OF GAY TONY. that my friends takes GTA4 and brings a flavour of San Andreas.

You should try Perfect Dark, improved on just about everything from goldeneye. It was easier to get lost tho. These older games are going to have clunky controls, but if you get used to them you might love goldeneye and perfect dark.

Definitely the former. Goldeneye was revolutionary at the time of its release. Not only did it prove FPSs can work on consoles (and that they didn't have to be half-assed ports from PC), but it also introduced many gamers to things (zoom in snipers, AI enemies who patrolled and strategized, dual wielding weapons, varied multiplayer modes, a 'proper' 3D world, etc) that were rarely seen in video games at that point.

It might seem like basic stuff nowadays. But Goldeneye basically defined the entire console FPS genre for years after its release. Doom might have brought FPS games into the mainstream, but Goldeneye proved that console FPS games can work really well. If it weren't for Goldeneye, most console FPSs nowadays wouldn't exist...or would, at least, look quite different than they do now.

People are FAR too easily pleased. It's an EA game- the clue's in the studio. They occasionally make good racing games but they do not make survival horror games. They can copy survival horror games but it's not really their game. They're wearing other people's clothing and it's not even proper old school survival horror clothing like Eternal Darkness style.

This industry has entered a meaningless looking glass where giving the appearance of being more complicated is being confused for being more entertaining. Sci-fi, buff ancient Greeks - it's all as far removed from most of the people who play these games as can be. Why can't games makers and their fans see more of the magic in the everyday? That's what series like Silent Hill did - it was the everyday distorted. Monkey Island was about an everyday guy who became a pirate. Few have that dry sense of humour any more.

Humanity is in a civil galactic war when a coalition of alien races are so diluted by their leaders they need to exterminate anything that threatens their path to salvation. The covenant is a uniform society of shared technologies from several galaxies under one religious banner who have set aside all differences to find all 7 religious artifacts (which turn out to be weapons that eradicate the hoss for a deadly parasite that literally would consume all life) so they can become one with their gods. They are lead by one race of "prophets" that in reality are leading their society to suicide. The weapons were made to contain the threat and as a safety precaution they wipe all life when activated. Ontop of all that there is the insurrection which happens within the covenant and the executions and bannishings for those who fail in the eyes of the prophets.

The universe is massive and more thought out than any other video game franchise. Each book is fantastic as well. Even I you don't like the gameplay people like the books. They are extremely well written

after reading all of the comments on this article, i have to say, alot of gamers nowadays just like games that dont have any real story. GTA? Mass Effect? Assassins Creed? Halo? these are some of the best games this gen has had to offer, excluding halo 1 and 2 which were last gen. The weight of the story element in these games was substantial. Mass Effect introduced us to possible future of humanity and our galaxy, AC presented us with the idea that there is a large conspiracy hiding in our current time. Halo, was also like Mass effect in which it created another future of Humanity, GTA was amazing in its own respect, it allowed you to live as a Fresh Of the Boat immigrant with no real regard to human life, yes the gameplay in GTA had its flaws, but with all the things that worked, GTA turned out to be a great game, it could have been an amzing game if they decided to keep many of the features from GTA:SA, but i think that is what they will fix in GTA5. Mass Effect had amazing gameplay, i think the only reason people didn't like it is because they just wanted shoot things while the game was trying to concentrate on story. Halo also had amazing gameplay, and an equally amazing SP and MP, it wasn't an average FPS, it challenged the formula set by COD, and all the COD fanboys hated on Halo for being innovative. Last of all, the Assassins Creed series is one of the best that I have played, it combined an amazing story full of conspiracy with innovative "traveling capabilities" (dont know another way to say this), and with the historical accuracy that the games had, i would have to say that this is the most innovative game series ever created.

Now in thre case of the most overrated games, i only have one, and that is COD. it is the most useless and most repetitive game series ever created. the multiplayer used to be fun, and sometimes still is, but as a whole package, this game has disappointed many times over.

Bayonetta - An over the top, Devil May Cry copy and paste game with annoying/unappealing characters. Plus, the story is so bogged in its over sexualized character and in jokes that it comes off as being egotistic. The gameplay is flashy and interesting, but the characters and story are just overbearing.

Max Payne 3 - A horrible third person shooter that quite frankly has a lot of gameplay issues that many people prefer to ignore when reviewing because they are too engrossed by the action, kill effects, and multiplayer. The narrative needed more polish and would have been good had they not made the family we are protecting annoying and not kept Max dwelling on his family's deaths. Something, by the way, that he came to terms with in the second game.

Wii: LoZ: Skyward Sword - Great game. Not as good as many made it out to be. Alienating game play for people who prefer traditional controls made a lot of people have to be frustrated through a game that they liked but could have loved.

PS3: Killzone 2. It was pretty. It wasn't a bad game at all. Terribly overrated though. I think that people saw the graphics and by default attributed all things good about gaming to it.

Xbox 360: Gears of War 3. Nothing against the series in general, nor those who liked 3, as this is only my opinion. But they really should have stopped after 2. The great look and decent gameplay of the first game along with the likes of curb stomps, etc. were fleshed out and perfected in part 2. Part 3 was an 'also ran but shouldn't have' imo.

Multiplat: GTA4 was hyped to absolute Hades. Received 'perfect 10' review scores it had no business getting. And was pretty much a boring, tedious game that took PC mods to make worthwhile. That being said, Modern Warfare 3 was plain and simply a bloated, near useless 5 legged cash cow that people couldn't resist getting a taste of. So I'll call it a tie.

For me it would have to be halo don't get me wrong I loved the first halo when it came out.But after that i didn't understand all the praise they received not because they where bad but because they never changed any of the game mechanics all of them where essentially halo 1 with better graphics and the most minor gameplay tweeks ever.

I'm sorry but not having MP online lobbies for friends to get together and play on the same team is terrible! I bought that game thinking its going to be better then halo and cod. But no lobbies?... It's the main reason why I didn't get Killzone 3.

Oops, my mistake. I meant Killzone 2. I didn't buy Killzone 3 because of 2. But to be honest, i didn't mind the controls for KZ2(which was the main complaint about it) just the MP lobby mess.

I loved LoZ: Skyward Sword, LoZ:1 and OoT (in that order).

But I did not like a LttP (fininshed) and TP (stopped more than halfway) as much as everyone else seemed to.

Uncharted 2 without a doubt, mainly because of the multitude of 10s and N4PS3G jizz thrown at it. if people said 'yes, its a good game but it doesnt break any new ground or do anything special' then it wouldve been fine. but everyone constantly calling it the greatest video game of all time was just ridiculous. its one of the single most linear games in the entire world because of its 'cinematic'-ness, has dodgy controls, and has a ridiculous cliche story. oh wow monster like things, never saw that coming.

Final Fantasy 7 is also right up there. played it for a few hours, and in those hours i barely actually got to play, and when i did its just turn based. not my type of game, and i dont see what all the fuss was about. not a JRPG (or turn based ANYTHING) fan at all though, so that goes a long way to explaining it.

i would add GT5, but most reputable publications gave it a 7-8 which i agree with. the N4G crowd vastly overrate it though.

also Fable, played it and didnt think it was anything special. have fable 3 sitting there (got it for free) and have never even touched it after not enjoying the others.

I love AC, and realize the gameplay has some hiccups, but I absolutely love the story and the stealthy kills. Top game series for me. Yes we know tower defense was lame. Didnt have to play it though.

Uncharted is not overrated either to me. The series is more of interactive film than pure video game. Guess it's love it or leave it. I love it.

I find the most overrated games to be Skyrim (which I like), and Gravity Rush (Which I like)

These days it's too commonplace to place greatness upon mediocrity. Must be a generational thing.

Don't get me wrong it's my favorite series by far out of any in any generation and I love the games but I have to admit that I also thought that Uncharted 3 was overrated, it just felt like a carbon copy of Uncharted 2. A lot of the set pieces seemed like reused improved versions of what the second game had already done.
I think that to a certain extent God of War is too hyped as well, I played through the first one and thought it was OK, then the second one and I remember thinking OK then here I go again. By the time I got to the third and an hour in I couldn't be bothered to play basically the same game a third time, now I know some of you who read this would be thinking "How could you say that when something like Uncharted follows a similar pattern?" And my answer to that would be;
1. While I did find the Uncharted games similar they felt different whereas the God of War games, to me, all felt the same.
2. I'm a little biased towards Uncharted with it being my favorite series.
In hindsight I wish I had given God of War 3 a proper chance and played it when I had the opportunity.

@laxbeav... I don't think you know what "overrated" means then. It stems from all the published rave reviews a game would get that someone might disagree on. If magazines or websites deem a game to be "incredible", "amazing", etc. And you then buy it, play it, and thought it was just "ok" because you played better games out there then yes, you can say the game is overrated...

...and for the record, ALL reviews are an opinion. The difference being that the publicized ones are done by people that get payed for their opinions, they make a living playing more games in one day than your average joe plays in 1 week...

not to mention that their opinion can add millions of sales to a game or kill it so it has some weight to it whereas our opinions on a game won't make much of a difference in it's sales number...so for that reason alone we can say a game that receives 9's and 10's when it actually deserves 6 and 7's is in fact, overrated.

I agree, Final Fantasy VII is so horrendously-overrated it's not funny. Final Fantasy IV and VI are WAY better than that heap of fanboyish crap. Cloud is a crossdresser. Sephiroth is a Mama's Boy. Tifa is a scantily-clad, big-tittied ho (for the lonely virgin basement-dwelling fanboys to fap to because that's all they can ever get out of women -- let alone FICTIONAL characters). Barret is Mr. T taking over the A(VALANCHE) Team.

Frankly, that game sucked balls. Lots of elements are lifted straight from Final Fantasy VI (basically a rehash), and the graphics are even shit compared to the very FIRST Final Fantasy.

Idk what game reviewers were thinking praising GTA IV so much. It was nowhere near as fun as the RenderWare engine GTA games from last gen.

GTA was my favorite series. I own every game in the GTA series all on PlayStation systems. IMO GTA IV deserved about a 90/100 average, not a 98 on Metacritic. <- Website is messed up now. All games listed above: The Meta-scores are too damn high!

Even though GTA IV tried to be too realstic, had bad driving mechanics, friends always calling you on the phone, repetitive missions and other annoyances, I finished the game and I enjoyed it for the most part. It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't quite as incredible as most reviewers claimed.

I still have very high hopes and expectations for Grand Theft Auto V (San Andreas FTW) and I'm also looking forward to the downloadable GTA style Action-adventure indie game, Retro City Rampage.

For me it's hands down battlefield 3...

It's one thing thinking a game is just "ok" or "has good moments" but this is a game that made me wonder what was so "great" about it each time i pushed start. You know how some games gradually get better as you progress in the game? well this game kept getting worse...i'm talking graphics, sound, story, weapons, you name it.
I played through it with fingers crossed hoping it will get better but it never did, and when i finished it i really wanted to throw it out the window or burn it, or both.

It's the ONLY game i can remember in this generation or the last that i returned back to the store as soon as i finished it... Yes, i'm talking about the single player although the few times i played multiplayer i was just as bored and frustrated... The graphics were nothing revolutionary as crave, ea, or whoever made this stupid game said it would be..."destructable environments" blah-blah-blah. You mean that big building that fell down which i didn't cause?? That's it??...and i saw no difference in installing that 2nd hd disk.

Characters would clip in and out, get lost, stuck,.etc...The hatred i developed for this game is as big if not more so than the hatred Cartman has for hippies...
needless to say i won't be buying battlefield 4,5 or 6.

Just thinking about it fills me with rage, and i would run over any crave/ea employee if i see them crossing the street.

Can only comment on games I've played so:

GTA 4 and MW2.

Can't believe I fell for the hype of those two gamnes. GTA was soo boring and repetitive. At least I completed the single player of MW2 (and still did not have a clue to if there was a story or not!).

Also Crysis - massive hype because of graphics but just could not get into it at all.

I WILL NOT be getting GTA V! I learnt my lesson the hard way - but it will still be hyped to the max (10/10 best game ever.. blash.. blah..)
