Sony vs. Microsoft - Next Gen

Sony and Microsoft are the two leading console developers with the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Since the release of both consoles, with online gaming, the two companies have been at each other, each of them wanting more players and to become the number one leading console.

With Sony and Microsoft each wanting their franchises to earn as much money as possible before they release their next-generation consoles, they will also be waiting for the other company to blink. Sony and Microsoft did this with the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Everyone was anxious to know which would be released first, many rumours circled the internet and word of mouth until the Xbox 360 was released in 2005, hard-drive-less.

I don't think you can compare it to last gen.
Too much has changed and the gaming market is completely different now than where it was at the end of PS2 and the original Xbox.
It's a whole new ball game now where everything is going digital and there is a thriving online community.

In previous Gens People cared about games. this gen and next gen people only care about the graphics.

wont be about MS vs sony. It never was this gen. It was more about the fan base and their bitter rivalry.

From the company perspective, MS and sony are more friends than they are enemies. We like to put them in more traditional good vs evil roles because it makes more sense to us as consumers.

Next gen will be the same.

You are right. People downplayed graphics and talked about games last gen because PS2 was clearly inferior to Xbox in the graphics department. This gen, these same people believe the PS3 is somehow graphically superior, so it is all about graphics now.

lol thats exactly what i thought. just becuase "core" gamers prefer these two doesnt make them the leaders. last i checked the wii still has many million units ahead of each ( even with getting outsold the last year by both the gap is still crazy wide )

As long as people reply with tact and respect others opinions it should be a great debate.. It's safe to say that neither company will be dropping out of the console market anytime soon.. Both are way to invested and have large userbases, the bitterness should be non existent. Coke and pepsi, mcdonalds and burger king, dish and direc tv all coexist so why can't microsoft and sony?

Whatever happens I don't see Sony allowing Microsoft the one year advantage they enjoyed with the 360. Sony has proven that they belong in the home console market and I have all the confidence that they will make the right choices with the ps4..

So, next year's E3 will either be about the same as this year or will start the decline of this gen by showing the next-gen consoles for release in 2014 (or Holiday 2013).

My prediction: basically like this gen. Hardware potential similar, 5-10% difference. MS have a more "advanced" online system and Sony offering a larger selection of exclusive games/content.

Main area from improvement, social interaction. A greater feel of being "connected" to other people, content and services.

And finally, digital distribution beginning to out weight retail (probably late into next gen).

Yep, thats my prediction as well.
Particularly on the Sony side there is a lot of disconnection in terms of applications.

I expect nextgen to smoosh it all together, Chat, listening to music, watching movies, copying files, accessing the web, trophies, maybe even PS Home.

Multi-tasking will become as natural and seamless as on a PC.

Sony Entertainment has posted multi-billion dollar losses in the last few quarters, being affected by the Japan earthquake, the hacking fiasco, and the unexpectedly strong competition and subsequent sluggish ps3 sales this gen (relatively speaking, compared to last gen). Sony have already gone on the record stating they would not be spending anywhere near what they spent on the ps3 for their next gen console. That pretty much leaves the ball in Microsofts court. With the killing they make from xbox live gold memberships (and the ads that run on that service), the unexpected success of kinect, and their being the dominant console in sales in North America, Microsoft can afford to spend whatever they need to in order to lead the technical specs next gen. Sony is struggling to catch Microsoft in worlwide sales this gen, and that's having a technical advantage in hand, many fantastic exclusives, and despite them being the only console with a blu ray player. Many folks bought the console for blu ray solely early on this gen, when it was one of the cheapest and best blu ray players available. They will not get that advantage next gen, and that also has to be factored in. Taking these factors into account, it would appear Microsoft is poised to not only win the next cycle, but possibly dominate it. Who knows what development houses will choose to do next gen, but the trend is leading to fewer and fewer developers choosing to develop strictly for one console. Will Microsoft simply start buying up developers to stack the odds more in their favor? What about apple? Will they get into the console market? Right now, if I was laying down bets, my money would be on Microsoft. They have the cash to burn.

Sony launched the PS3 when Microsoft had a worldwide lead of 10 million consoles. The gap is down to around 3 million. And that while PS3 was much more expensive than 360. How do you figure that Sony is struggling to catch up?

You are talking BS. Don't you think that Nintendo and Sega didn't have money when their systems failed? People always say the same $hit 'Because Microsoft has money they will win' Microsoft had money this gen too and STILL made a broken system that took three years to fix and a Kinect that barely works. In business it is not just who has the money, it's who has the better plan.

Microsoft has lots of money now and their products still get overshadowed by other things. Their phones, their MP3 players, their OS. Heck Nintendo is STILL ahead and is the first one out with a next gen console and Microsoft still can't out pace Sony's units sold by a landslide.If all it took was money then Microsoft could easily dominate everything that they do and would be the leader of this gen. But they aren't. How many people have a Windows phone? I could probably count the number on my fingers and toes. So in short money is not the only factor.

I personally like to play japanese games and i know that i will get a lot on PS4 while when i want shooters i will get it on the 720.
