Crysis 3 developers say CryEngine 3 trumps Unreal Engine 4

Epic Games made a big splash at E3 2012 by revealing their Unreal Engine 4 technology to the gaming media. With an impressive demonstration of what to expect from next generation visuals, between them are Square Enix, gamers were left salivating over the potential. However, the creator of Crysis 3 wasn't so impressed.

Probably does as well the unreal engine historically has never produced Games to the quality of cryengine

Bimkoblerutso4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

Do you know how many games have utilized the Unreal Engine? Even if you're not a fan of the engine itself, there have been so many stellar games that used it that it's nearly impossible to justify that statement.

--Onilink--4322d ago

i dont see why the amount of games has anything to do with the graphical quality.

True, there is an insane amount of games that have used UE3 this gen. Yet CryEngine2 still produced better graphics. Just ask anyone with a good PC and they will tell you the same thing.

Vladplaya4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

Quality over quantity... Just because there are shitload of games made with unreal technology, doesn't mean that the engine itself has better visuals. CryEngine could do everything they showed in the Unreal Engine 4, years ago, and that's what the article is all about.
Btw games made on the unreal engine, never look like the demo anyways.

Bimkoblerutso4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

@Onilink

Perhaps he's simply talking about graphical fidelity, but his statement read: "the unreal engine has never produced GAMES to the quality of cryengine."

I couldn't really care any less about which engine produces the prettier graphics. They've both produced outstanding visuals in the past, in my honest opinion. But as far as quality GAMES are concerned, the Unreal Engine has some of the most lauded games in the industry under it's belt.

juggulator4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

UE3 has been used on so many game because of its flexibility and ease of use and I think Gears is a good example of a game that has come close the graphical quality of CryEngine.

So the UE4 demo is looking to build on that flexibility and its also what Epic wants in-game graphics to look like on next gen consoles. They have basically screamed this at Sony and Microsoft so now its up to them to make consoles that are powerful enough to do so.

Its also doing some new stuff under the hood. Theres no more baked/precomputed lighting, which every current engine does(I promise :) ). Don't be disappointed but this is really the biggest change but if they can truly eliminate having to bake lighting then it'll benefit everyone.

So what it boils down to is games that look like the Elemental demo in-game and you get more of them because devs can do it in less time.

--Onilink--4322d ago

well the entire article is about the graphics of both engines, common sense tells me his comment is about graphics, which is true, no Unreal Engine 3 game has looked as good as Crysis 2 for example

In other news; Coca-Cola CEO says Pepsi sucks...

TheLeapist4322d ago

Honestly. This concept is exactly what came to mind when I read the article headline.

FriedGoat4322d ago

You can tell which games are made with the unreal engine.
They are the ones where the textures don't load in for at least 10 seconds.

Smkt4322d ago

yeah.. and the unoptimized one with the massive pop-ins is the cry engine.

ShoryukenII4322d ago

If what he says is true, then that may mean that Unreal Engine 4 tech demo is how it will look on consoles and whatever it is that he is going on about is on PC. It's either that or he's BSing.

xtreampro4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

Why are you calling BS? both are next-gen engines and CryEgine 3 dose everything UE4 dose, have you been sleeping all this time?

Just like how UE4 dose everything in real-time CE3 dose as well, and in regards to lighting Crytek have actually been doing it in real-time for several years now.

Almost everything on UE4's feature list is on CE3's feature list and that's because both are great engines, both are easy to use and both as I said before are built for the next generation of video games.

@shoryukenll: CE3 is a multiplatofmr engine just like UE4, and just like UE4 these next-gen engines will show their true power on the PC platform but they'll also perform extremely well on next-gen consoles.

Crytek have already demonstrated CE3 working on all three platforms and how easy it is to update the game world during level creation on all three platforms simultaneously in real-time.

How is it that you people follow a gaming website yet you don't know this?

MilkMan4322d ago

Agreed, and I hate Crysis.
Every time I see Unreal 4 I know this is Epic peddling their engine and pushing new hardware down our throats so they can license their stupid tech.

Cause you know, that's what whores do.

RXL4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

not being impressed with what Unreal 4 can do is just plain snobby and dumb..

it was a GREAT demo and instead of turning up their noses they should laud it for stepping forward..and possibly a collaboration could've taken place..

not diss it as "nothing"..smh..

how many games used the previous cryengine this gen?..and how many used unreal?..exactly..

Tachyon_Nova4322d ago

That is not valid. Unreal Engine was around from the start of the generation whereas CE3 launched many years late. By the time CE3 launched most devs had already either made their own engine or had already used UE3 so it wasn't worth them spending time getting used to another engine. But once next gen starts that will probably change dramatically.

Grimhammer004322d ago

Both these asshat devs on consoles have screen tearing in every interation.

Get me no screen tearing @60fps and 720p (because I'm a realist). Lol

Computersaysno4322d ago

Buy a PC then and you can have that at 2560 x 1600 lol

Fishy Fingers4322d ago

Get them a console with more than 512mb of RAM then.

PersonMan4322d ago

Actually, the PS3 version of both Crysis and Crysis 2 have absolutely zero screen tearing on the PS3 and less than 1% screen tearing on Xbox 360 (in the top 20 pixels of the screen like GTA IV).

However, Farcry 2 did not use CryEngine 3 and it has lots of screen tearing on both platforms.

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa127d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno126d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast126d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial126d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.
