My Top 5 Underrated Games

SA writes: This list was hard because I could have taken the easy route by adding games that most have never heard of. Heard of Jamestown: The Legend of the Lost Colony? It's a good game and I could have added to this list, but that's the thing, no one heard of it. I got to thinking that I should add games that I know more than a handful have heard of.

Definitely agree with Brutal Legend. The gameplay may not have been groundbreaking, but the entire package was incredibly well done. You can tell the developers really loved what they were doing.

Good, diverse list btw.

grailly4363d ago

the gameplay was, in fact, ground breaking, it just wasn't executed that well. The idea was close the what we have now in starhawk, it just didn't work as well

humbleopinion4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

It wasn't THAT groundbreaking actually: The Outfit is a 2006 game (from the people behind COH and Warhammer games) that introduced similar Action+Strategy blend.

grailly4363d ago

wow, never heard of the outfit, and it looks awesome! still, I believe that if only one game did it before BL was still quite original.

A game called Battlezone came out in 1998 on PC which mixed action and real time strategy. You effectively played as a unit on a real time strategy battlefield from the first person perspective and you could jump in and out vehicles you built and things like that.

I guess what i'm trying to say is whilst it isn't a new concept it's a criminally underexplored one.

As a metal fan myself I really enjoyed Brutal Legend (great soundtrack, unique open-world, fun action) but it could of done with some tweaking from the rts perspective.

In fact i'd include Battlezone on my under rated games list.

The real Colombian4363d ago

Brutal legend was fun and had a sense of humor.

showtimefolks4363d ago

brutal legend is a lot of fun and its under $5 so buy it and enjoy

AIndoria4363d ago

Valkyria Chronices for PlayStation 3, period.
I'd also add Final Fantasy VIII because it was dissed by so many people that it's criminal.

Hicken4363d ago

Agree with both of these on massive levels.

Fez4363d ago

For anyone who enjoyed the ps2-era GTA games and who likes nice visual effects and killing Nazis of course, I'd say The Saboteur is for you! One of my favourite games this gen and really underrated.

Pintheshadows4363d ago

The Saboteur is criminally underlooked and has an amazing open world. I miss Pandemic. I wanted Mercs 3.

Weird olive branch but I mentioned Battlezone above and Pandemic actually developed the sequel. Not relevant you may say but considering Battlezone 2 was their first game and Saboteur their last. I don't know, I thought it was cool.

This game...holy heck. Makes me feel old.

gamer7804749d ago

I loved that game. Unlocked every song

MadLad749d ago

Liked the aesthetic, tone, humor, and action combat.
Didn't care for the RTS elements.

Never cared to finish it.

porkChop749d ago

Yeah they marketed the game like it was a Heavy Metal GTA-ish adventure. And at the beginning of the game that's what it was. The game fell apart when the half-baked RTS stuff came in. I'd be interested in a reboot or sequel, but just go full action adventure and ditch the RTS. There really is something there with the Heavy Metal theme.

Ryushaa749d ago

I feel you. I just hacked the game to have infinite life/RTS resources

PS360 gen was special, then again it was still the mid 2000s. Everything went to shite in the teens

mastershredder749d ago

I think that was the breaker for Doublefine's creative ambitions and their mixing of genres (which was getting kinda stale). It was a nice to look at but it was more of a tribute to the many things Tim loves, was influenced by and has great admiration for....but the forced RTS stuff was like a drinking buddy's "great idea" that never should have come to light. The game seemed a lot more vast, but it ended pretty quickly too. And Jack Black. As much as I don't care for him as an actor (annoying and requires constant attention), this was absolutely made with him in mind and it worked. I mean come on, Tenacious D? For as Metal as this game was trying to be, even comically, it did little more than meow.
